Analysis & Selections by

I þOÎNTER

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

"ePOINT Notebook" - Our list of Point-to-Pointers & Hunter Chasers to look out for during the season.

eþOÎNT NOTEBOOK #010
Thursda
y, February 26.
Here are our  mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran at last weekend's meeting;

BUCKET AWL
ch, g. Lír - Upham Close
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Alan Walter
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Bucket Awl might have been unlucky not to win Division Two of the Maiden on Great Trethew 's card on 22/02/04. This five-year-old son of Lír was always prominent throughout and was second, holding every chance, when falling at the second last. This was his first racecourse experience and I hope he doesn´t have any adverse effect, because on this evidence, he appears to have the ability to win a maiden at some stage in the future.
CADRAVEL
b, g. Cadeaux Genereux - Space Travel
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: R Rawle
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Cadravel showed plenty of promise on his first start over obstacles, in Division Four of the Maiden on Great Trethew 's card on 22/02/04. Bred to be quite speedy on the flat, being by Cadeaux Genereux, out of a Dancing Dissident mare, this five-year-old only showed limited ability in six runs on the flat. however he surpassed that level of form here, leading til the second and again at the twelfth til weakening three from home and was still second when coming down at the last. Hopefully he is none the worse for this and he will had sound claims in similar events during the remainder of the campaign though his ability to stay 3miles is open to question.
DEVIL'S PERK
b, g. Executive Perk - She Devil
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: John Wade
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Devil's Perk, a six-year-old gelding by Executive Perk, was very unfortunate not to win his first race over obstacles at Duncombe Park on 21/02/04. Tailed off in his only prior racecourse appearance behind Limerick Leader in a bumper race at Perth in September '03, Devil's Perk was held up in a division of the Maiden until made progress from the eighth fence to lead with four fences to jump. He was two lengths clear and seemingly only having to jump the final obstacle to win, when he jinxed ands crashed through the wing of the fence, giving his pilot no chance of staying in the plate. Fortunately no long-term damage seems to have been done and hopefully he will atone for this mishap well before the end of the season.
HUNCA MUNCA
b, m. Presenting - Tulladante
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: J R Weatherby
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Hunca Munca showed plenty of promise in the Mares' Maiden on Mollington 's card on 22/02/04. This five-year-old daughter of Presenting, was always prominent from flagfall and was in touch when falling at the eleventh. This was her first racecourse experience and hopefully she shows no ill-effect and she does appear to possess some ability.
JERROBOAM (FR)
b, g. Luchiroverte - Banouda (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: The Hon. Mrs. S Sherwood
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Jerroboam is a seven-year-old gelding by Luchiroverte, out of the mare Banouda, who is a daughter of Crin Noir Ii. He has been entered in maiden company this weekend, and should he run, will be making his first appearance since pulling up in a Novice Hurdle at Warwick in December '02. His sire Luchiroverte tends to produce late-maturing individuals, therefore it's quite possible that he may be able to better the form previously shown, and since he has a nice pedigree could pay to keep the ride side of during the remainder of the campaign.
MONTENEGRO
gr, g. Terimon - Spartan Sprite
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Lord Somerleyton
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Montenegro showed plenty of promise on his first attempt between the flags in the Maiden at Mark's Tey on 21/02/04. Formerly trained by Ferdy Murphy, [where he was tailed off one start in a bumper at Huntingdon in May '03], Montenegro was held up initially, until making steady headway to lead at the fifteenth. He couldn´t sustain that effort and weakened a fence later, however he was only beaten 221/2lengths behind the winner Madmidge. This is a good platform for him to progress from, and hopefully, he will make his presence felt in similar event during the remainder of the campaign.
MOSCOW TRADITION
b, g. Moscow Society (USA) - Bucks Grove
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Mrs. J H Docker
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Moscow Tradition drops to this grade after showing solid form under rules for Jonjo O´Neill. This six-year-old son of Moscow Society won his only start in Ireland in a 4yo Maiden at Liscarroll in March '02 and then ran six times under rules, the best being when only failing by a short head to beat Fox In The Box in a Novice Hurdle at Chepstow in December '02, plus a 21lengths fifth to Tardar in a similar event at the same venue in February '03. This Moscow Tradition is still open to further improvement and probably only needs to maintain that level of form to win in Restricted company.
ROSE OF THE HILL
gr, g. Roselier (FR) - Golden Leaf
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: David Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Any maiden that hails from the yard of David Pipe is naturally worth a second look and therefore I'll be keeping any eye on Rose Of The Hill, who is amongst the entries this weekend. This five-year-old son of Roselier, is out of a mare by Croghan Hill, and will probably need time to be seen to best effect, however he appeals in terms of his pedigree and gets the nod.
SELFCERTIFIED
b, g. Lancastrian - Class Mate
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: P A Bull
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Selfcertified has a lovely jumping pedigree, being a five-year-old son of Lancastrian, out of Class Mate, [a daughter of Decent Fellow], who was placed over hurdles in the early-nineties. He could be a lovely horse in time, and hopefully he'll serve notice to this this season
THANKS JIM
b, g. Jolly Jake (NZ) - Summing Oak
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Mrs. G B Walford
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Thanks Jim is one of this week's more interesting newcomers. This five-year-old son of Jolly Jake, is out of the mare Summing Oak, a daughter of the American sire Summing, who is a half-sister to two minor winners in the States, and is herself out of the mare Singing Oak, who on 11 races at up to 1mile1f in the Unites States. There is plenty to like about this pedigree and it'll be interesting to see how he gets during this campaign.
VICTIM
ch, g. Alphabatim (USA) - Castlemartin
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Nigel Twiston-Davies
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Victim is one of the more in teresting recruits to the pointing ranks, however probably most because of the fact he is owned by trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies. This seven-year-old hasn´t as yet raced under any form of racing, however this son of Alphabatim, out of the mare Castlemartin, (a daughter of Carlingford Castle), certainly appears to have a lovely jumper's pedigree and it'll be interesting to see how he fears if he races in this discipline.

eþOÎNT NOTEBOOK #009
Friday, February 20.
In a week that sees former useful chasers Algan, [former winner of the King George steeple¨CH´. at Kempton], Bouchasson, Sad Mad Bad, and Djeddah  amongst the entries,  here are our  mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran at last weekend's meeting;

ALFIE BE
b, g. Alflora (IRE) - Might Be
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Mrs. C R Saunders
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Alfie Be was heavily supported to win the 2nd division of the Open Maiden on Tweseldown 's card on 08/02/04. However, after travelling well to the 10th, he weakened after a mistake at the next fence eventually pulling up two from home. This was the first time this six-year-old son of Alflora had seen the racecourse and it´s fair to assume that the experience would not be lost on him.
A FINE STORY
br, g. Le Moss - Kelly's Story
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- B. Munro-Wilson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- A Fine Story returned to the racecourse at High Easter on 15/02/04. This eight-year-old son of Le Moss, had showed useful form in maiden races two seasons ago and was having his first race since in the 8yo+ Maiden Race, and although he eventually pulled up at the thirteenth. He did just about enough to offer up hope for the future. This run will help blow away the cobwebs and he will be interesting in similar races to this run if he still retains all of his ability... time will tell.
BEET DE BOB
br, g. Bob Back (USA) - Beet Statement
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. Susan E Busby
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Beet De Bob enters the eþOÎNT notebook '04, having just failed to get into ONE TO JUMP '04. This six-year-old son of Bob Back showed plenty of promise last term in Ireland, beating Saucynorwich by 5lengths to land a 4&5yo Maiden at Inch on his third start in April '03, before beating Shady Plaisir to land a "Winner Of One" race at Dromlane two months later. There is plenty of potential here and it'll be interesting to see how he progresses during the remainder of the campaign.
EARL OF BUCKINGHAM
b, g. Alderbrook - Arctic Oats
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- C W Booth
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- The owner of Earl of Buckingham will be hoping that this individual turns out to be as useful as his horse Duke of Buckingham, who has shown fair form over fences this winter. If pedigree means anything, then Earl of Buckingham could well be good enough, [at some stage], to win under rules himself, as he is a six-year-old son of Alderbrook, out of Arctic Oats, [a daughter of Oats], who won four races under rules during the late-eighties / early-nineties. Assuming he has been well schooled I will be surprised if he doesn´t show some promise before the end of the season.
FOREIGN FIELD (FR)
b, g. Sleeping Car (FR) - Dame Laurel (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. S J Biggins
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I'm adding Foreign Field to the eþOÎNT notebook '04. This five-year-old is by Sleeping Car, out of a mare by the stallion Rose Laurel, and certainly appeals to me on paper, and is the sort that I hope shows gradual improvement throughout the course of the season.
FRENCH CEDAR
b, g. Jupiter Island - Another Rumour
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Major General C A Ramsay
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- French Cedar is no worldbeater, however this eight-year-old son of Jupiter Island showed enough potential to be worth keeping an eye on in pointes this season. After showing a little promise with Nicky Henderson during the '91 campaign, French Cedar had a quiet first season with Jessica Harrington in Ireland in '92, however when put over fences beating former useful hurdler City Hall in a beginners` steeple¨CH´. at Down Royal in May ' 03. He didn't build on that effort, however he is relatively lightly-raced and was rated 99 on his last effort, therefore assuming he hasn´t deteriorated rapidly, might well be good enough to win between the flags... even though his opportunities will be limited.
JOE LIVELY
b, g. Flemensfirth (USA) - Forest Gale
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. A M Callow
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Joe Lively is a five-year-old by Flemensfirth out of the mare Forest Gale, a daughter of Strong Gale, which makes Joe Lively a half-brother to winning pointers Philtre and Snowtre. If a horse's pedigree is ever an indicator to the likelihood of winning then you'd have to believe that Joe Lively has a decent of winning a maiden this term.. lets see if he does.
KING FREDDY
b, g. Rakaposhi King - The Clarsách
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- G T H Bailey
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- King Freddy made a promising first racecourse appearance at High Easter on 15/02/04. This five-year-old son of Rakaposhi King, was prominent throughout in the second division of the Maiden Race, and after briefly leading at the sixteenth, stayed on eye-catchingly to finish second to the favourite Just Jove, [btn. 1length]. He should come on appreciably for the experience and must have good claims in a similar event before the end of the season.
KÜPTO (FR)
br,. Luchiroverte - Neva (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Mrs.. Susan E Busby
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Küpto is another newcomer that I am adding to the '04 eþOÎNT portfolio. this six-year-old son of Luchiroverte, is out of the mare Neva, [a daughter of Danosó], who was placed in cross-country steeple¨CH´. in France in the mid-eighties. I like his pedigree and have no illusions about an immediate return. Hopefully he'll progress throughout the coming season.
LINDSAY (FR)
b, g. Chamberlin (FR) - Oliday (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- John R Wilson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- There are some useful recruits to the pointing ranks this winter and one potentially interesting one for the future is Lindsay. Formerly trained by Guillaume Macaire on France, Lindsay is a five-year-old son of Chamberlin, out of Oliday, (a daughter of Djarvis) and he joins present connections off of the back of wins in three of his last five starts, [ he was second in the other two] at Compiègne [twice] and Vichy. His last two wins came over fences, therefore I wouldn't have many doubts about his ability to jump our style of obstacle. He will have been meticulously schooled by Macaire and would probably have added to that trainer's tally of 205 wins this year, so will careful placement should be more than capable of winning a point, or a hunter chase.
NDITLIR
ch, m. Lir - Ndita
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- J Heard
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Nditlír has an interesting pedigree, being a daughter of Lir, out of Ndita, [herself a daughter of Be My Native] who won twice over a mile as a three-year-old. This five-year-old may not be a worldbeater but there does appears to be the possibility of potential for the future. Her early efforts may be a good indicator of what may occur in the future.
OFFICER CADET
b, g. Warcraft (USA) - Flinging
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- K W Biggins
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Officer Cadet attracted our attention amongst the entries this week, This five-year-old is by Warcraft, out of the mare Flinging, who is a daughter of the Italian sire Good Times and will have been well-schooled by connections. I like him and I hope he shows us promise throughout the current campaign.
PATUM PEPERIUM
b, g. Sir Harry Lewis (USA) - Relishing ( Relkino )
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Mrs. W Shand Kydd
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Patum Peperium is a five-year-old son of Sir Harry Lewis (increasing in popularity amongst trainers under rules, out of the mare Relishing, who is a daughter of Relkino. He is another newcomers to catch the eye amongst the entries, who hopefully will progress throughout the current season.
SHE'S A TERROR
gr, m. Terimon - Shedid
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. P Rowe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Here's hoping She's A Terror doesn´t live up to her name!!! This five-year-old mare is by Terimon out of Shedid, [a mare by St Columbus], who hunter chases in the early-nineties. She certainly has the right pedigree to win a race and it'll be interesting to see how she gets on during the remainder of the season.

ePOINT NOTEBOOK #008
Friday, February 13.
Week six of the season and here our this week's mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran at last weekend's meeting;

ALFIE BE
ALICE REIGNS
b, m. Sir Harry Lewis (USA) - Richards Kate
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- S P Tindall
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I´d be disappointed if Alice Reigns doesn´t win a race before the end of the season. This seven-year-old daughter of Sir Harry Lewis, has already proven we has the ability to win, as despite racing keenly from flagfall, she managed to knuckle down to win a bumper on her debut for Amanda Perret at Folkestone in January ´02, beating Tarongoshy by 1¼lengths. She was tried over hurdles again at Folkestone in November ´02, however this time her enthusiasm was her undoing and after taking a keen hold throughout, couldn´t sustain here effort weakening to finish 20lengths behind the winner Cullan. Obviously her ability to stay has to be proven, however if she gives herself a chance to settle early on, she is going to be difficult to beat, especially in mares´ only races.
ALONG THE LAWN
b, m. Commanche Run - Northcha Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--N Morgan
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Along The Lawn is a six-year-old mare by Commanche Run, out of a Brush Aside mare. She boasts some decent maiden form in Ireland last term, finishing in the frame on four of her five starts, her most recent efforts being when coming third to Wasi in a 5yo+Confined Maiden at Ballindenisk in May ´03, [btn. 3¼lengths], before coming out a week later a filling the same position behind Klipperstreet in a similar event at Bartlemy, [btn. 9lengths]. That experience will not have been lost on her and it isn´t hard to imagine her landing a maiden before the end of the season.
ALOTOFBULL
b, g. Torus - La´Bavette
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- M K Titchner
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Alotofbull is a six-year-old by Torus, out of a Le Bavard mare. He ran twice in Ireland last term, finishing fourth to Saynothing in a 5&6yo Maiden at The Pigeons in March ´03, [btn. 32lengths], before improving for the run to outstay Ballyards to win a 4&5yo Maiden at Comber six weeks later. Quite what the form amounts to is unclear, however hopefully he will have come on for that experience and hopefully we will measure a gradual upward curve for new connections this season.
BORN SPECIAL
b, g. Bluebird (USA) - Dixie Eyes Blazing (USA)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Paul Williamson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Born Special could not be more worse bred for this discipline, being a son of Bluebird out of the mare Dixie Eyes Blazing, a daughter of Gone West who is very closely related to Zafonic and Zamindar. The last thing you would envisage this horse doing is running in a 3 mile maiden point-to-point, however though I doubt he would have beaten the eventual winner Ten Bob, there was plenty to like about his run in Division 1 of the maiden at Witton Castle on 08/02/04. He has shown very little when tried on the flat, so it is somewhat surprising to note he was travelling well when falling at the 14th fence. There are questions about his ability to stay which still need resolving, however this appears to be a highly encouraging first effort, and hopefully something he will build on during the remainder of the season.
BRIERY FOX
ch, g. Phardante (FR) - Briery Gale
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Mrs. Helen Plumbly
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Briery Fox made an encouraging first appearance of the season in the Open Maiden on Horseheath ´s card on 07/02/04. This six-year-old son of Phardante was settled early on before making smooth progress to lead after the 14th. He came shortly under pressure but stayed on nicely to finish only 1 ½ lengths behind the winner Hi Tech Man. He is certain to come on for the run and should go close in similar company before the end of the season.
CAIMIN´S WELL
b, g. Spanish Place (USA) - Pragownia
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: D Manning
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Caimin´s Well is an interesting performer. He has had two runs to date, and on both occasions: in Ireland at Ballindenisk in May ´03 and at Witton Castle on 08/02/04. This seven-year-old son of Spanish Place has been strongly supported to win a maiden, yet has fallen when travelling well. On this occasion, he came down at the 11th obstacle. Clearly he has ability. The fact the market speaks so strongly, backs this up. You do get the impression that if he puts in a clear round, he is going to win a maiden at some stage this season... We shall see.
COMBAT DRINKER
b, g. Mandalus - Auburn Park
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: R P Blackburn
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Combat Drinker is a newcomer that I´m adding to the list. He is a six-year-old by Mandalus out of a mare by Sonnen Gold and appears, on paper anyway, to have the right pedigree for this discipline. We will no doubt find out over the coming months.
COMFORTABLY NUMB (FR)
br, g. Charnwood Forest - Regalante (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--J S Delahooke
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--We get a lot of satisfaction out of picking out winner, however you get a greater buzz when a debutante obliges. I´m not certain that Comfortably Numb will match the feat of Bilingual, who won last weekend, however we like his pedigree, being a son of Charnwood Forest, out of a mare by the French sire Gairloch. We are under no illusions about an immediate success, however we will take heart if he progresses during the remainder of the season.
EIGHTY DAYS
b, g. Air Quest - Valley Hope
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Mrs.. M Stirk
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- We´ve added Eighty Days to the ePOINT portfolio, even though this five-year-old son of Air Quest, (out of an Altountash mare), has yet to race under any code of racing. There is plenty of stamina in his pedigree and whilst he may not be forward enough to do himself justice, we will be encouraged if he shows some promise before the end of the season.
FEDERAL CASE (FR)
b, g. Nikos - Miss Normania (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--A Howland Jackson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- As he was the last horse we cut from our "ONE TO JUMP" feature, we had no hesitation in adding Federal Case to the ePOINT portfolio. This six-year-old son of Nikos only has one run to his name, when under Enda Bolger 's care in a 4&5yo Maiden point-to-point at Eyrecourt in May ´03. On that occasion Federal Case travelled well before inflicting a 3lengths defeat to Live Music and thirteen other rivals. Federal Case clearly has ability and given that he will have allowed to build physically on that effort, must have good prospects in Restricted company this season... we´ll be disappointed if he draws a blank this term.
HEISAMODEL
b, g. Balla Cove - Liffeyside Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: J J Boulter
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Heisamodel is a promising recruit from the Irish scene. This six-year-old gelding by Balla Cove, won his first two point-to-points, beating Max Time by 4lengths on his debut in a 5&6yo Geldings Maiden at Lingstown in March ´03, before winning a "Winner Of Two" race at Stradbally a month later. He was allowed to take his chance in the Powers Gold Label Point-To-Point Championship Final at the Punchestown Festival, and whilst he ran well, Max Time was able to reverse Lingstown form beating Heisamodel and eighteen rivals with a bit in hand. He was 20lengtsh behind that day however that isn´t a bad effort and although he disappointed last time pt at Roscommon, his overall profile is that of a progressive pointer, who should be able to find opportunities before the end of the season.
HIGHFIELD´S CLOVER
b, g. Petoski - Dipped In Clover
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: S P Tindall
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Highfield´s Clover was another newcomer who attracted my attention amongst the entries. This five-year-old son of Petoski is out of a Golden Dipper mare and certainly appealed on paper. Whether or not his ability matches this initial promise, time will tell. That said, some prominent placings before the end of the season would be promising for the future.
IRISH PADDY
b, g. Idris - Ceili Queen
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: W Brown
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Irish Paddy made an encouraging first appearance on the racecourse in the third division of the maiden on Witton Castle 's card on 08/02/04. Prominent throughout, Irish Paddy led at the 12th and stayed prominent until being outpaced two from home, eventually finishing 8 lengths behind the winner, Miss Royello. Although the time of this division of the maiden was by far the slowest, it was an encouraging effort by this five-year-old son of Idris and he definitely showed enough to suggest that a win in a similar event is not out of the question before the end of the season.
LËGANDA
b, g. Midnight Legend - Lasting Memory
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: J Michael Walker
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Lëganda is the first of two horses that attracted my attention in the Club Members Maiden on the card at Witton Castle on 08/02/04. Although he´d only got as far as the eighth when tipping up, this five-year-old son of Midnight Legend was 20 lengths clear of the field and seemingly enjoying the experience. A quick look at his pedigree gave further rise for encouragement, being that he is out of a Ardross mare which certainly suggests that he isn´t out of place in this discipline and I will certainly be hoping that he hasn´t suffered any ill effect from this fall as there well may be more to come from him before the end of the season.
NOMADIC BLAZE
b, g. Nomadic Way (USA) - Dreamago
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: D G Atkinson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Nomadic Blaze is the second horse I´ve noted who ran in the Club Members Maiden at Witton Castle on 08/02/04. Left in the lead after Lëganda fell at the 8th, Nomadic Blaze held that position easily and seemingly had the race in the pocket when he was cannoned into and brought down before the 16th fence. He is a maiden in all but name and as the time of this race was quicker than the Mens´ Open on the same card, I will be amazed if he doesn´t recoup losses before the end of the season.
OPAL´LOU (FR)
b, m. Garde Royalé - Calligraphie (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: R Pyman
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- It will be interesting to see whether connections can persuade Opal´Lou to keep her head in front this season. She boasts some useful form from her racing days in France as well as last term with Paul Nicholls, however she had several opportunities to get her head in front, [Just A Minute nicked a Mares´ Only Novices´ Chase off of her on the post at Exeter in December ´02, and Artic Gamble managed the same feat over 3m1f at Wincanton in April ´03] and there is definitely a question mark about her resolution to be answered. That said she is taken a drop in grade and is certainly worth giving the benefit of the doubt.. well initially anyway.
SIMPLY THE ONE
ch, g Simply Great (FR) - Lady Mearlane
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: G Lloyd
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Simply The One made a promising reappearance at Tweseldown on 08/02/04. This seven-year-old son of Simply Great certainly catches the eye having been held up until staying through beaten rivals to get within 2 ½ lengths of the talented, but frustrating Agua Ardente. The time of this race was nearly 9 seconds faster than Division 2 of the maiden, and 7 seconds faster than the 3rd and it´s hardly stretching the imagination when saying that a reproduction of this effort should be good enough to win similar races before the end of the season.
SIZER
ch, g. Eurobus - Costenetta
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Alan Potts
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Sizer is the second horse to attract my attention from Division 3 of the maiden at Witton Castle on 08/02/04. This seven-year-old son of Eurobus clearly had been showing connections something for him to have been backed down to favouritism. However, he proved to be very keen in the early skirmishes, so much so that he took complete charge and ran out at the fourth. As a rule, I don´t tend to support horses with this sort of temperament, however there clearly appears to be some ability here, and it may pay to monitor it during the remainder of the season, rather than dismissing it out of hand.
THINK COMMERCIAL
b, g. Mister Lord (USA) - Dingle Gal
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- D A Johnson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Last season´s Champion Owner under rules David Johnson, has spent a lot of money last year in Ireland, with varying degrees of success. I personally would have given a few more of the more backwards ones more experience between the flags than racing them under rules, however that´s my personal opinion. I have to therefore assume that Think Commercial must fall into this category, however even if that were the case, this five-year-old son of Mister Lord, will probably be all the better for any experience gained this season in this discipline before joining the main Nicholashayne string next season.
TOUJOURS
ch, g. Toulon - Kept In The Dark
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--S P Tindall
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Toujours is another ex-Irish import in this week 's list. This seven-year-old gelding by Toulon, out of a Kemal mare, has yet to race in the UK, however he boasts two runs in Ireland during the 2002 campaign, failing to compete on his debut at Summerhill in April ´02, where he failed to complete, however he fared far better next time out, a month later, chasing home Sub Contract in a 5&6yo Geldings Maiden at Neacserne, albeit 20lengths behind the winner. He hasn´t raced since however may have simply needed time to mature and I´d be hopeful that he could at the very least go close in maiden company before the end of the season
XRAYSAUCE
ch, m. Elegant Monarch - City Passenger
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- F S W Daniels
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I´m not certain that Xraysauce will match the feat of Bilingual, who won on his debut last weekend.. in fact I doubt it, however we were interested in her pedigree and whilst we are under no illusions about an immediate success, we will take heart if she shows some promise before the end of the current
season

ePOINT NOTEBOOK #007
Saturday, February 7.
Week five of the season and we've included a mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran at last weekend's meeting;

ASTHEFELLOWSAID
ch, g. Glacial Storm (USA) - Celia's Fancy
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Maurice Smith
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Asthefellowsaid is added to the ePOINT notebook. He would probably have made it into the main ONE TO JUMP feature had we been able to establish his well-being as we are aware he has ability, as problem in his promising sixth to Satcoslam in a 5yo Geldings Maiden at Bramblestown in March '00, followed by a second to Kilifi Creek in a Maiden at The Pigeons in March '02. As this already indicates, despite his ability he isn´t at present proving to be easy to keep sound and this fallibility appears to have struck again as he was travelling well when pulling up in a maiden at Higham twelve month ago. Clearly his soundness is cause for concern, however should he stand training, he isn´t one we'd want to oppose.
COURT ADJOURN
b, g. North Col - Tapalong
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Sir Michael Connell
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Court Adjourn is one of a select group of horses added from last week's meetings. This seven-year-old son of North Col ran well on his debut in the second division of the Open Maiden on Larkhill 's card on 31/01/2004. After initially leading, Court Adjourn was dropped in before taking up the lead again at the 16th - a position he held until after the last, only going down by 1 ¼ lengths to Vinnie Boy in a time just under 4 seconds faster than the first division. This looks to be a solid effort and he's not going to have to improve much to win a similar event before the end of the season.
GERMANY PARK
ch, g. Germany (USA) - Lohunda Park
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: C. Stewart
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Germany Park is another ex-Irish pointer added to this feature. This six-year-old gelding by the American sire Germany has been given plenty of experience in Ireland, however his form in 2002 isn´t worth much. He did improve during last season and his 6lengths third to Fane Counsel in a 5yo Adjacent Hunt Maiden at Lisgoold in January '03, and his 4lengths second to Beau Geste in a 5yo Geldings Maiden at Dungarvan two weeks later certainly would give him a chance in maiden company. His form did deteriorated again afterwards, however horses with far less potential have gone onto win in this country and therefore I'd certainly be prepared to give him a chance.. will you?
KERRES NOIRES (FR)
b, g. Noir Et Or - Viagara (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--: Robert Waley-Cohen
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I will be fascinated to see how Kerres Noires performs this season. This six-year-old son of Noir Et Or, [out of a daughter of Mont Basile], has shown plenty of promise in his native France and appears to have progressed with each of his runs, the most noteworthy being his last two effort, a decent third to Duc del la Brunie in the Prix Rivoli (Steeple-CH´.) (Non-Thoroughbreds) at Auteuil in February '03, [btn. 7lengths], before coming out a month later to land the Prix Mitsouko III (Steeple-CH´.) (Non-Thoroughbreds) by 6lengths from Kandy Ball, with Koqueliçot, [one of our horses to follow this term, who has won his last three chases for Philip Hobbs], another 11lengths back in fourth. This could be potentially really decent form and if he entered in an open race he would be definitely worth keeping on the right side of... A run in hunter chases would also prove to a profitable move.
KYALAMI (FR)
gr, g. Royal Charter (FR) - Reine Margot III (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- R Kelvin-Hughes
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- I'm been aware of Kyalami for a while now and feel compelled to put him into this list having taken him out of our ONE TO JUMP feature. This six-year-old by Royal Charter, out of the mare Reine Margot III, [a daughter of Trenél], who won an A.Q.P.S. non-thoroughbred race at Cluny in the eighties. He hasn´t as yet raced under any rules of racing, however he has a lovely pedigree and hopefully should show some promise during the remainder of the season.
LUTTEUR BLEU (FR)
b, g. Franc Bleu Argent (USA) - Sirène Du Lac (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- J J Boulter
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Lutteur Bleu is another newcomer I've taken a shine to amongst this week's entries. This five-year-old gelding is by Franc Bleu Argent, out of the mare Sirène Du Lac, [a daughter of Missolonghi], who won twice on the flat in France during the eighties. There is potential here and I'll be hoping for some promise from him before the end of the season.
NEW LODGE EXPRESS
b, g. Grand Lodge (USA) - Wakt
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»--B Hawkins
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- New Lodge Express may be worth another chance especially as he may be better than he showed in Division 1 of the maiden at Thorpe Lodge on 01/02/2004. This six-year-old son of Grand Lodge, showed little when trained in Ireland two seasons ago, however after being held up at the back of the field, New Lodge Express appears to have noticeable headway from the back until pulling up at the 16th. I am not clear why New Lodge Express was pulled up, though I am aware that the officials were satisfied that no foul play occurred, therefore assuming it wasn't a significant injury, it may be possible that it was the first significant piece of form he's shown and therefore it may pay to note whether he progresses during the remainder of the campaign.
MAJOR BELLE (FR)
ch, m. Cyborg (FR) - Mistine Major (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- J J Boulter
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Major Belle could be an interesting recruit to the pointing ranks. This five-year-old mare by Cyborg, out of a mare by Major Petingo has not as yet raced in the UK, however she does boast some interesting form in France when trained in Phillip Boisgontier, and was a winner of a steeplechase over 3500m at Toulouse in March '03, however the best formline is her second to Sleeping Jack in the Prix La Lômagne Steeple-CH´. at Pau on her final start. Sleeping Jack went onto win a graded race at Auteuil, [though has been largely disappointing since] so she clearly was going the right way. Her stamina is unproven, however she seems to have plenty of potential and is worth looking out for during the remainder of the season.
MASALARIAN
b, g. Doyoun - Masamiyda
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Miss L H D Bridges
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Masalarian could be another useful recruit to the pointing ranks.. if he stays. This nine-year-old son of Doyoun, boasts some decnet form over hurdles and fences when trained by Arthur Moore in Ireland, his best win being in the Kilbegnet European Breeders Fund Novice Chase (Listed Race) at Kilbeggan in October '01, however there were arguably some better efforts in defeat. He was a little disappointing last term and hasn´t been seen out since coming home 36lengths behind Killultagh Storm at Listowel in September '03, however he is still rated 127, and if he is capable of running anywhere near that mark, he should be able to win between the flags ... or in hunter chase company over shorter distances.
MILITAIRE (FR)
ch, g. Bering - Moon Review (USA)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- J M Turner
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Militaire is another interesting recruit to join the Turners this season. This six-year-old son of Bering is relatively lightly raced in the UK, however does boast winning form on the flat at Compiègne as a two-year-old as well as some useful efforts for Jehan Betran de Balanda over obstacles. After chasing home Jaboune on his British debut at Wetherby in November '02, Militaire got his head in front at the third attempt in a handicap at Wetherby in March '03, where he was booted home by Norman Williamson to beat Talarive by 1¼lengths. He has disappointed since as had broken blood vessels which is worrying, however there appeared to still be some scope for further development and if he can stand training, might well be up to winning in this grade.
MY MOONDANCER (FR)
b, g. Muhtarram (USA) - Key Role
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- R Kelvin-Hughes
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- My Moondancer is a five-year-old by Muhtarram, out of the mare Key Role, [a daughter of Be My Guest]. He hasn´t as yet raced under any rules of racing, however he has a lovely pedigree and with a yard guaranteed to ensure he is nurtured to his maximum potential... Let's hope for some promise during the remainder of the season.
RADBROOK HALL
b, g. Teenoso (USA) - Sarah's Venture
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- T R George
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Although eventually soundly beaten by the winner Spanish Dolphin (who is already in our ePOINT feature), there was plenty to like about the debut effort of Radbrook Hall in Division 1 of the maiden on Larkhill 's card on 31/01/2004. Always near the pace, Radbrook Hall jumped well until making his effort after the 15th. He was not able to sustain this effort, however a 17 length defeat is very respectable and something he can build on during the remainder of the season.
WELCOME NEWS
ch, m. Bob Back (USA) - Rosie O´Keeffe
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mrs. Caroline Shaw
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Welcome News is the last of the horses to note from last week's meetings, having only just failed to justify favouritism on his reappearance at Weston Park on 01/02/2004. This six-year-old daughter of Bob Back travelled well in midfield initially, until making headway to go fourth after the 14th. He appears to have sustained this effort, however try as he might, he was unable to get past Home Tor who made all the running. Even though the time of this division was 8 seconds slower than the race held half an hour later, I'm not sure there are many from that race that might improve as much as I hope he does during the remainder of the season, hence his inclusion this week...time will tell whether this was a wise judgement.
