Analysis & Selections by

I þOÎNTER

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

"ePOINT Notebook" - Our list of Point-to-Pointers & Hunter Chasers to look out for during the season.

eþOÎNT NOTEBOOK #012
Thursday, March 11.
Here are our  mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran at last weekend's meeting;

BLACK LEOPARD
br, g. Presenting - Glen Laura
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: P J Finn
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Black Leopard is a five-year-old gelding by Presenting, out of a daughter of Kambalda. He attracted my attention amongst this week's entries and I'll be hoping that we see some potential from him before the end of the season.
BLUE ROYAL (FR)
b, g. Dauphin Du Bourg (FR) - Before The Flag
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Lynn Wilson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Its nice to see that this former useful hurdler is back in training. At his peak Blue Royal wasn't far behind the best hurdlers of his generation and his third to Istabraq in the 2000 Champion Hurdle, [btn. 4lengths] was probably his best effort to date. He has only run twice since then, running down the field in the Shell Champion Hurdle at Punchestown in May '00, before pulling up lame behind Ilnamar in the 2002 Martell Aintree Hurdle, however if he retains any of his former ability, he is going to be difficult to beat in this grade.
HEVER ROAD
ch, g. Anshan - The Little Bag
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Prof D B A Silk
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Hever Road suggested there may be more to come from him in Division 2 (Part 2) of the maiden on Garthorpe 's card on 06/03/04. Ridden prominently throughout, Hever Road moved into a challenging position at the 13th, however couldn't sustain this effort and weakened 2 out, eventually finishing third to Cousin George (beaten 16 lengths). This was a fair first effort and I'd like to believe there was further promise to come over the coming weeks of the campaign.
IZZUTHEFOX
b, g. Castle Keep - Tigrinium Splenden
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: C Storey
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: I presume that Izzuthefox has been slow to come to hand. He is a seven-year-old son of Castle Keep, out of Tigrinium Splenden, [a daughter of Buckley] and as yet, has not yet made it onto the track. I don't have high expectations, however I hope he shows some ability before the end of the campaign.
JUMP FOR PADDY
b, g. Michelozzo (USA) - Tudor Spartan
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: B Perkins
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Jump For Paddy made an encouraging first appearance in a division of the maiden at Garnons on 07/03/04. Held up initially in this 2 1/2 mile event, this five-year-old son of Michelozzo stayed on nicely to finish 3rd to Shemardi (beaten 23 lengths). He appears to be open to further improvement and has the potential to win a similar event before the end of the season.
PRIORITISATION
b, g. Shernazar - No One Knows
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: P J Finn
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Prioritisation is a five-year-old by Shernazar, out of No One Knows, [a daughter of Kemal], who was placed in hunter chases in the mid-nineties. He doesn´t look bad on paper and it'll be interesting to see how gets on during the remainder of the season.
REDHOUSE CHEVALIER
b, g. Pursuit Of Love - Trampolo (USA)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: James R Adam
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Redhouse Chevalier is a five-year-old by Pursuit Of Love, out of Trampolo, (a daughter of Trempolino). He didn´t show much in three runs under rules, however its worth noting that amo0ngst the also-rans in his second start, behind Monet's Garden at Ayr in February '03 was Le Millenaire, who won his first race at odds of 20/1... Might lighting strike twice?!!
ROUND THE ISLES
b, g. Jupiter Island - Beenaround
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Paul Rackham
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Round The Isle made an encouraging first appearance at Horseheath on 06/03/04. Held up initially, he made smooth progress from the 11th steadily improving his position under sympathetic handling to finish second to the winner Germany Park (btn. 20 lengths). He should come on appreciably for this run and is worth noting in similar company during the remainder of the season.
TREASULIER
gr, g. Roselier (FR) - Flashy Treasure
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs. J M Woodward
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦ --: Treasulier is a seven-year-old son of Roselier, who has shown plenty of plenty between the flags in Ireland in points without success. By far his best effort was in a 5 & 6yo Geldings Maiden at Lingstown in march '03, where he beat all bar Grey Report, [who has gone on to win four races this season under rules for Phillip Hobbs]. He has failed to complete on three other occasions, so clearly isn´t a straightforward mount, however that Lingstown form would be good enough for him to run well under rules nevermind win a maiden in this grade... He really should win a maiden before the end of the season.

eþOÎNT NOTEBOOK #011
Thursday, March 4.
Here are our  mix of horses from this week's entries, as well as horses who ran at last weekend's meeting;

BARRY'S LORD
br, g. Lord Americo - Quayfield
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:Mrs. B L Shaw
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:Barry's Lord is a six-year-old gelding by Lord Americo, who has joined present connections after winning a 5yo Geldings Maiden at Tallow in February '03 before running well in a bumper at Cork a month later eventually finishing 25lengths behind the winner Kitski, which also included the "also-rans" Tanterari and Lord Halfnothin' who have both won under rules this season. He clearly has ability and could do well in this grade if he can harness this level of form in this country.
GUNVILLE
ch, g. Infantry - Emily's Niece
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:Mrs. J. Kelly
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:Gunville showed plenty of promise in Division II, [Part I] of the Open Maiden on Bishops' Court card on 28/02/04. This five-year-old son of Infantry was prominent throughout and was chasing the eventual winner Combat Drinker in a safe second place, when coming down at the second last. We'd like to think he is open to further improvement and hopefully can figure in this grade, assuming his confidence hasn´t been knocked by this unfortunate incident.
JETHRO TULL
b, g. Witness Box (USA) - Country Project
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:Mrs. M. Stirk
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:Although soundly beaten by easy winner High Fields in a division of the 2miles~4f Maiden at Hornby on 29/02/04, Jethro Tull ran a fair race behind the winner and is a potential candidate for future success. This five-year-old son of Witness Box was always handy here, and made a bid for glory approaching the final obstacle. He didn´t have the gears of the winner, [who may be useful], but he was able to secure second-spot here and as he was doing his best work at the end of this race, and may be even better over an extra half mile... a win in this sort of company is definitely within his grasp.
KING BARRY (FR)
br, g. Cadoudal (FR) - Leonie Des Champs (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:Raymond Anderson Green
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:King Barry reads well on paper, being a five-year-old son of Cadoudal, out of the mare Leonie Des Champs, [an unraced daughter of Crystal Palace]. I like what I see so far and hope that he shows some promise in maiden company during the remainder of the season.
MINISTERIAL
b, g. Spanish Place (USA) - Parsonage
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:Nigel Benstead
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:I'm taking a chance with Ministerial, in the hope that he can improve on the form shown in Ireland. This seven-year-old son of Spanish Place ran seven times last season in Ireland, only making the frame on two occasions, however he has demonstrated that he possesses some ability - His third to Pascali Boy in a 6yo+ Maiden at Eyrecourt in May '03, [btn. 23lengths], wasn´t a bad effort, however his next run, when coming home fourth behind Final Target in a similar event at Bartlemy three weeks later is probably his best bit of form. I do get the impression that he may have bettered that form if he was more strongly handled, and if the move to our shores proves to be positive in this regard, I wouldn´t be at all surprised if he showed improved form as the season progresses.
NÅMCHE BAZAAR
ch, g. Glacial Storm (USA) - Carrow Way
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:Miss Katie Thory
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:Nåmche Bazaar looked very ordinary in three point-to-points in Ireland in '01 and '02, however although he was beaten a distance in third on his most recent start in a 5&6yo Geldings Maiden at Killaloe in February '03. its worth noting that the winner Its Over and second Golden Hand, have both good fair form between the flags, most notably Henrietta Knight's Cheltenham prospect Rosslea. He might end up stringing a few more letters to his form figures this season, however there was a spark of hope on that last outing and it'll be interesting to see whether the change of scenery brings about some improvement this winter.
RUNNING EARTH
gr, g. Roselier (FR) - Drumdeels Star
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:R. M. Penny
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:Running Earth was one of our choices from the entries list this week. This five-year-old is by Roselier, out of the mare Drumdeels Star, [a daughter of Le Bavard], who won two races for Francis Flood in Ireland during the early-nineties. He catches the eye and we won't be at all surprised if we don´t see some potential from this quarter before the end of the season
SPENÇIVE
b, g. El Conquistador - Wood Heath
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:H. J. Manners
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:Spençive is a purely speculative choice, and mainly owes his place in this list to the good form of the yard under rules of late. This seven-year-old son of El Conquistador is out of the mare Wood Heath, [who is a daughter of the stallion Héres], and is almost certainly going to be backward - plenty of the sire's progeny are. I'm not expecting much this season if I'm honest however I will take some encouragement from some signs of promise before the end of the season.
THANX A P M
gr, g. Mistertopogigo - Passage To Freedom
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:Mrs. L H Tinkler
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:Thanx A P M is a seven-year-old gelding by Mistertopogigo, out of the mare Passage To Freedom, [a daughter of Pal's Passage]. This horse has only had one career run to date, in a bumper at Catterick in February '01, and whilst initially the bare form looks poor, [he was 57lengths behind the winner West Point], it was a really strong lineup, the most notable inclusion being Intersky Falcon, who finished third. It is a worry that we haven´t seen him since then, however the time off the course should have allowed him to strengthen up and it'll be interesting to see how he performs during the coming weeks.
THE BROOKLET
br, g. Alderbrook - The Howlet
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦
--:C J Hitchings
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦
--:The Brooklet is another horse who attracted our attention amongst this week's meetings. This six-year-old is by Alderbrook, out of the mare The Howlet, [a daughter of New Brig], who won races over fences for Ken Oliver in the mid-eighties. He is certainly bred to be a jumper and we'll looking for signs of promise from him during the remainder of the season.
