"eþOÎNT Notebook" 2005, [Section One] by "I þOÎNTEЯ"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent each-way claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

"әPOINT Notebook" - Our list of Point-to-Pointers & Hunter Chasers to look out for during the season.

ӘÞOINT NOTEBOOK #03
Thursday, January 13, 2005.
Here are our list of horses who ran well at last week's Meetings, as well as some of the more interesting entries from this week's Meetings;

AMERICANCONNECTION
b,g. Lord Americo - Ballyea Jacki
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Ron George
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Americanconnection has never been able to fulfil the potential that several of his trainers believed he once had. This son of Lord Americo has only managed seven runs for trainers of the calibré of Willie Mullins and Martin Pipe. However a third 16lengths behind Grade 1 chase winner Ollie Magern in a Novice Hurdle at Exeter in October ´03, confirmed that he still had some ability. He was having his fist race for over 15months in the Mens Open on the card at Larkhill on 09/01/05, and gave a good account of himself, staying on at one pace to finish fourth, 8lengths behind the winner Springford. If connection can keep him sound, I do believe that this nine-year-old can go close .. as long as he is realistically placed
BARRSHAN
b,g. Anshan - Bula Beag
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Lynn Wilson
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Barrshan caught my eye amongst this week´s entries. This six-year-old is by Anshan, out of the mare Bula Beag, which makes him a half-brother to Drombeag, who won a novice hurdle last season for Jonjo O´Neill. Barrshan has already shown promise in a couple of starts in Ireland, the most encouraging of these being when coming home second behind We´re Getting There in a 5 & 6yo Geldings Maiden at Lismore in March ´04. This is a solid base for him to build on and I´d be very hopeful of his landing a maiden before the end of the season
EVA´S SONGBIRD
ch,g. Eve´s Error - Not So Dear
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs P. Rowe
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Eva´s Songbird could be an interesting recruit for 2005. This son of Eve´s Error is out of the mare Not So Dear (a daughter of Dĥaudevi), which makes him a half-brother to eight-times winning chaser Brave Buccaneer. Eva´s Songbird has improved steadily in six attempts in Points in Ireland, and was purchased after coming home second behind Black Lord in a "6yo+ Geldings Maiden" at Clonakilty in May ´04. He makes plenty of appeal and I´ll be hoping that he makes it into the winning enclosure in 2005.
ĞILL´MAR (FR)
b,g. Le Nain Jaune (FR) - Lolomar (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: M P Wiggin
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I thought that Ġill´mar made an encouraging reappearance at Larkhill ´s Army Meeting on 09/01/05. This eleven-year-old son of Le Nain Jaune missed last term through injury, however had previously been a useful performer in Open company, and gave a strong indication that he retained plenty of this ability in the Ladies Open won by Upton Adventure, travelling kindly before making a short-lived effort two out. Lack of fitness told, however he was only beaten 15lengths by the winner and as long as he is given time to get over these exertions, certainly can be placed to win a race of this nature, and could be worth another try in Hunter Chases
KING´S PRESENT
b,g. Presenting - Dessie´s Error
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs Judy Wilson
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ King's Present appears the entries at Barbury Castle this weekend. This seven-year-old has joined present connections after showing plenty of promise if three Irish point-to-points; pulling up on the first occasion at Lisgoold in January, before running much better in a 6yo Geldings Maiden at Kildorrery a month later, where he weakened to finish fourth behind Shannon Lodge, [btn. 22lengths]. This son of Presenting made one more appearance in a 6&7yo Geldings Maiden at Dromoland in April '04, and was far more competitive, only going down by 6lengths when coming home third behind Samikin. Assuming that he has come on this summer, he must have strong claims of at the very least landing a Maiden race before the end of the season.
MOYCRAFT
br,g. Warcraft (USA) - Moy Ran Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: M. J. Parr
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Moycraft is another newcomer that caught my eye amongst this week´s meetings. This six-year-old is a son of Warcraft, out of the mare Moy Ran Lady, [a daughter of Black Minstrel], which makes Moycraft a half-brother to winning chaser Sir Norman. He appeals on pedigree and it´ll be interesting to see how he gets on this season.
NATIVE HUNTER
br,g. Be My Native (USA) - Huntstown Gale
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: J R Weatherby
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Native Hunter is due to make a return to the course having missed last term due to injury. This son of Be My Native is a fragile individual however he´d shown plenty of ability during the 2003 campaign, winning three times, twice at Garthorpe, and most recently on his final start, where he stayed on strongly to beat Minella Hotel to land a Confined steeple´CH at Dingley in May ´03. This nine-year-old could well have made it under rules, and if he retains his ability may well be able to have a try in Hunter Chases at some stage this campaign
PERKY´S PRIDE
b,g. Executive Perk - Josie Mac
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Miss Tracy Williams
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Perky´s Pride gets the prize of "Unluckiest Horse of the Week". This nine-year-old was formally a useful novice hurdler when trained in Ireland by Michael Cunningham, winning third races as well as solid efforts in Pattern company. He failed to build on that form when bought to race with Martin Pipe, and was having his first run since pulling up in a handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot in June ´03, in the Ladies Open on Tweseldown ´s card on 09/01/05. It was a creditable effort as he had made good headway after having been initially held up to take the four from home, and was five lengths clear, when unseating his rider at the second last. As the horse that was chasing was You´re A Good´un, I would be 100% certain he would have prevailed, however he was still in the process of running a big race and must have decent claims of winning a similar race this term, and may even be good enough to run in Hunter Chases
PRESIDIO (GER)
b,g. Königsstuhl (GER) - Pradera (GER)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Steve Flook
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Presidio is a very interesting individual. This son of Königsstuhl won seven races on the flat in his native Germany before trying his hand over obstacles in this country. He has never won a race, and has only made the frame on one occasions, however he is just the sort of horse that his trainer could revitalise, and I will be interested to see if he shows some promise before the end of the season.
QUESTIONIT
b,m. Sovereign Water (FR) - Query Line
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Miss L Gardner
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Questionit, by rights, probably should have already been in this feature, as she fits the profile of a lot of the promising horses of 2004, that have already been included, and her reappearance in the Restricted race at Larkhill on 09/01/05, only goes to reinforce this impression. This daughter of Sovereign Water was held up, before making steady progress from the twelfth eventually coming home a creditable second behind easy winner West Paces, [btn. 7lengths]. Its the sort of runs which you´d hope this six-year-old will build upon, and granted further improvement, must have a decent chance of further success in 2005.
ROYAL BLAZER
b,g. Barathea - Royalé
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: M Hemphill
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Royal Blazer made a promising debut between the flags in the Open Maiden on the card at Higham ´s meeting on 09/01/05. This five-year-old son of Barathea had shown a little promise over hurdles when trained with Chris Grant last term, including coming home third behind Prize Ring in a handicap hurdle at Sedgefield in May ´04, and appeared to take well to this discipline, staying on steadily after being held up in the rear, to finish third, 12lengths behind the promising winner Waynesworld. That was a solid platform from which I hope he will build over the coming months and hopefully he will go close to winning a similar before the end of the season.
SAINT RÊVERIEN (FR)
b,g. Silver Rainbow - La Briganderie (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: C J Hitchings
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ My interest in French racing attracted me to Saint Rêverien, a  six-year-old son of Silver Rainbow, who had shown plenty of promise over fences in France, including coming home second to Ice Mood, in a steeplechase at Auteuil in April ´03; [Ice Mood went on to land the 2003 running of the Gras Savoye Cinema-Prix Ferdinand Dufaure (Grade 1 Chase)]. He disappointed in three attempts for Ian Williams, however as he still is a maiden, does have plenty going for him in this discipline... we´ll have to see how he gets on.
SOUTH-WESTERN
br,g. Roselier (FR) - Catchthegoose
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs M C Sweeney
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ South-Western is another newcomer that caught my eye amongst this week´s entries. This six-year-old is a son of Roselier, out of the mare Catchthegoose, [a daughter of Tug of War], which makes South-Western a half-brother to Jakers, who showed promise in points before landing two novice hurdles this season at Thurles and Tramore. He may be promising in due course, however I´d be hopeful he´d get his head in front before the end of this campaign.
SUZIE CREAM CHEESE
gr,m. Royal Charter (FR) - Scala Iv (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs R. Mackness
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ The interestingly named Suzie Cream Cheese makes plenty of appeal on pedigree... even if the name may not be to everyone's taste. This daughter of Royal Charter, is out of the mare Scala, [a daughter of Quart De Vin (FR)], which makes this six-year-old a half-sister to Kindle Ball, a winner over hurdles for Venetia Williams, and Gain Èr Ball who was placed over obstacles in France. She does make some appeal and could be one to note once she's had a couple of runs under her belt.
WILLY BOY (USA)
ch,g. St. Jovite (USA) - Jetbeeah
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: S. P. Tindall
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ At first glance Willy Boy has little to recommend him.. after all this six-year-old son of St. Jovite has shown very little in Ireland when pulling up in three point-to-points at Summerhill, Loughanmore and Loughbrickland, however if you dig a little deeper, you´ll discover that he is out of the dam Jetbeeah, [a daughter of Lomond (USA)], who has produced Dazilyn Lady (USA), [a daughter of Zilzal (USA)], Simonda, [a daughter of Singspiel] and Miss Grace, [a daughter of Atticus (USA)], who´ve all won races on the flat. Therefore its possible that Willy Boy may not be a lost cause and therefore watch out for him in Maiden company .. particularly if the market speaks favourably for him.

HORSES OF 2004 [Part II]
As promised, here is part two of the horses we're hoping will be amongst the winners who ran in 2004
;

LAH DI DAH LAD
b,g. Crested Lark - Classey
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Jimmy Tarry
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Despite turning ten, Lah Di Dah Lad has only had ten career starts, however last season was by far the most productive, running five times, finally losing his Maiden tag at Mollington in March before running creditably in three of his remaining four starts, the most recent being when weakening on the run-in after being 3 lengths up at the last, eventually going down to Darkarrow by ½ length. He is no world-beater, however hails from a family that improves markedly with age and could well add to his sole success in 2005.
LINDSAY (FR)
b,g. Chamberlin (FR) - Oliday (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Gordy Edwards
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Fascinating winning ex-hurdler/chaser when trained in France by Guillaume Macaire, he retains his place in the list after a brief appearance last season (he effectively only made one appearance last season, having fallen at the first on one other occasion) when finishing a fair second to Enitsàg in a Hunter Chase at Fakenham in March. This six-year-old son of Chamberlain is still lightly-raced and as a result is still open to further improvement and should be capable of winning if he is realistically placed by connections this season.
LORD OF THE ROAD
b,g. Gildoran - Ethel's Course
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: James Richardson
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ One of the more promising recruits from last season who only made one appearance last season in a Maiden at Woodford in April. However it was an impressive one, making smooth progress after being held up early on, before running on strongly to beat Willoughby Flyer by 10 lengths. Connections clearly think a bit of this individual as he has been given time to get over those exertions and it will not take a lot of improvement on that effort to see him enter the winner's enclosure in 2005.
MORAIRA
ch,g. Flemensfirth (USA) - Rossmill Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs C M Tinkler
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old could potentially improve on the form shown last season where after making a brief appearance (when failing to complete at Whitwell-On-The-Hill at the beginning of April) stayed on encouragingly eight days later to finish fourth behind Nought To Ninety in a division of the Maiden at the Staintondale Goathland meeting. This son of Flemensfirth will have learnt a lot from these experiences and should get much close to the winner's enclosure in 2005.
NDITŁÍR
ch,g. Lír - Ndită
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: John Heard
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This front-running five-year-old was put in this feature last season, more in hope than in expectation and whilst this daughter of Lír failed to get into the winner's enclosure, he did finish in the first four in four of his five attempts and might well have gone close at Lifton in April when still just in front when coming down at the last. I do not have high expectations for her, but it would be lovely to see her win a maiden this season.
NEMINOS
b,g. Lake Coniston - Bandit Girl
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Richard Matthias
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This five-year-old son of Lake Coniston took a while to show any worthwhile potential, finishing well behind on his debut on maiden company at Alpraham in April before running out at the second 3 weeks later at Pentreclwydau. Had that been his last run he almost certainly would not have got into this feature. However, on his final appearance 12 days later at Bredwardine he managed to get his head in front, despite showing signs of greenness coming home 10 lengths clear of the second Rescindo with the third horse another 25 lengths back. He has definitely given himself a useful platform on which he can build on this season and I would not be at all surprised if he adds to that tally in 2005.
NOUGHT TO NINETY
b,g. Mazaad - Bonnyhill Lass
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Miss C.C.Raw
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old built on an inauspicious start when showing very little before pulling up at the 11th in a Confined Maiden at Whitwell-On-The-Hill at the beginning of April, yet by coming out 8 days later at Charm Park and belying odds of 33/1 to stay on strongly and beat French Venture by a length. Better was to come. He came out 2 weeks later in Restricted company at Easingwold and hunted round at the back of the field before quickening up in good fashion to beat Civil Gent by 2 lengths. This son of Mazaad's ability to quicken at the end of his races is likely to stand him in good stead this season and if he builds on that promise, must have good chances of further success in 2005.
OFCOURSEHEKHAN
b,g. Phardante (FR) - Kings Gift
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Miss N.C. Stirling
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I'll be hoping that this six-year-old builds on the promise show last season. This ex-Irish pointer ran 4 times, winning of his 3rd start at Mosshouses in May as well as finishing in the frame on 2 other occasions. On his last start, he failed by 2 ½ lengths to beat Distracting in a Restricted race at Hexham and I hope that this stoutly-bred son of Phardante will add to his tally in 2005.
PA PIERRE
b,g. Pierre - Shoon River
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Louise Brewer
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I have left this ex-Irish pointer in the list in the hope that he gets more opportunities to appear this season. This son of Pierre only made 1 appearance last season - that was in a Restricted race at Cottenham at the beginning of February. On that occasion, he was held up before making good headway from the 12th, getting into a challenging position to lead half way up the run-in. Unfortunately, he was not able to sustain that effort and he was collared close home by Step 'N' Run who prevailed by a head. Time is still on this six-year-old's side and hopefully he will justify this confidence in him in 2005.
POT SHOT
b,g. Alflora - Triggered
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Pamela Sykes
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Although he made a slightly disappointing reappearance at Cottenham last week, I would be prepared to give this promising son of Alflora the benefit of the doubt, particularly if he repeats the form that, for sake of example, saw him beat Greet You Well at Brafield-On-The-Green in March. He has a bit to prove after Cottenham, but I am hopeful that this six-year-old confirms my faith placed in him.
PREACHER BOY
b,g. Classic Cliché - Gospel
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: John Dufosee
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ A promising recruit to the point-to-point ranks who is almost certainly better than a solitary win in Maiden company at Larkhill may suggest. Arguably, his best effort last season came in defeat in a Restricted race at Stoneaston in March where he only narrowly failed to catch the winner's enclosure. He disappointed last time out at Woodford, but can be forgiven that effort and this son of Classic Cliché certainly starts the season from a highly promising base.
PRIORITISATION
b,g. Shernazar - No One Knows
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: P J Finn
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ It'll be interesting to see whether this son of Shernazar appears between the flags this season, or goes into training at Nicholashayne. This former inmate of David Pipe ran 3 times last season, and after showing plenty of promise on his debut at Wadebridge in March (where he failed by 1 ½ lengths to beat Flash Point despite carrying 4lbs overweight) failed to build on that in two subsequent efforts, running poorly at Whitwell-On-The-Hill before coming home 3rd behind Harjaçh at Little Windsor 13 days later. It's quite possible that his first effort took far more out of him than initially seemed the case and as a result, it is quite likely that he will be given another opportunity in this discipline to fulfil the promise of his initial Wadebridge effort. I'll be disappointed if he doesn't win this season.
RED SQUARE KNIGHT
b,g. Roselier (FR) - Suny Salome
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs Lisa Williamson
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I must confess that I many have allowed sentiment to cloud my judgement here because I have a suspicion that barring injury, Red Square Knight may well have had a decent career under rules as this son of Roselier is a full-brother to top-class chaser Suny Bay though is a bay rather than his attractive grey sibling. I was fortunate enough to beat at Brampton Bryan at the end of March to see him have his first run in ages in a maiden on that card. Despite looking in need of the run, he made smooth progress from half-way, staying on to finish 2nd behind Shaking Chief, without ever looking likely to catch him. A promising effort, one which I hope he builds on in 2005.
RUNNING EARTH
gr,g. Roselier (FR) - Drumdeels Star
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Richard Barber
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Roselier is yet to complete in point-to-points to date. However, he has hinted that there may be more to come, particularly on his most recent start at Stafford Cross where he was competitive for 2 ½ miles before being pulled up 2 from home. He was backed into favouritism that day, and no doubt the same will be the case at some stage this season. This time, however, he may be mature enough to handle the pressure.
SAPEGA
b,g. Homo Sapien - Suzie Hegi
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs A.D. Williams
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I must profess that when I saw this nine-year-old readily beat Petrouge in an intermediate at Brampton Bryan in March, that I would be able to say that this nine-year-old would go through the season unbeaten, culminating in the victory over Major Adams in a Ladies Open at Coldharbour at the beginning of May. Sapega improved throughout the campaign and must have great chances of adding to these successes in 2005.
SECRETE CONTRACT
b,g. Contract Law (USA) - Secret Account
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Paul Hacking
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ After showing promise in 2003, I hoped this son of Contract Law would have built on that promise last season. For whatever reason, he only ran once in a Restricted at Marks Tey in February. However, it was a good effort, staying on after being held up initially to finish a creditable 2nd to Jim's Belief. Assuming he is able to return to the racecourse in 2005, it'll be disappointing if he isn't able to build on the promise shown thus far.
SELF-CERTIFIED
b,g. Lancastrian - Class Mate
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Peter Bull
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I believe this five-year-old son of Lancastrian was added to this feature last season, however he failed to complete in both attempts at Penshurst and Catsfield, though on each occasion he did hint that there might be more to come once he'd grown into his frame. He is one of the more riskier nominations if I'm honest, however he does deserve a second chance. We'll see in June whether it proved to be a wise choice.
SIR LANCELOT
gr,g. Crested Lark - Classey
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Jimmy Tarry
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ We clearly like the family don't we, as we have also placed his full-brother Lah Di Dah Lad on the list. As stated before, this is because this family is renowned for significant improvement, particularly much later than you would expect in most animals. This explains why this grey son of Crested Lark went from failing to complete in 2003 to finishing in the first four in each of his 4 starts, winning his Maiden at Dingley in April before running creditably in Restricted company there on two further occasions, the most recent being when he came home fourth, 7 lengths behind the winner, Holding The Fort. He should have physically improved during the summer and it will not be a huge surprise to find that this ten-year-old is an improved form performer in 2005.
SOVEREIGN DOVE
br,m. Sovereign Water (FR) - Emerald Dove
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Fred Hudsby
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This mare has to be flagged up as a potential winner this season having run promisingly on both starts to date, finishing 2nd on both occasions at Mollington in April and most recently Ashorne a month later when she was tenderly handled when all chance had gone, almost certainly being a lot better than the initial 20 length defeat might suggest. It'll be a huge surprise if this daughter of Sovereign Water doesn't lose her Maiden tag this season.
THE BROOKLET
br,g. Alderbrook - The Howlet
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: C.D.J. Hitchings
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I adore this horse!!! I don't care whether he ever runs under rules, I adore him! I was really lucky last season as when I saw this dark brown near-black gelding walk around the paddock on his debut at Garnons in March, I thought to myself 'This could be a really nice horse, one day'. It did however prove to be an inauspicious debut as he was carried out by a loose horse approaching the first. I saw him again a week later at Maisemore Park, where because he was ridden by Julian Pritchard, he attracted some interest though clearly knew little of what was required and was looked after before pulling up at the 12th. I didn't expect anything of him as a result so therefore I was pleased to learn that he went back to Maisemore Park in May after failing to complete at Bitterley a month earlier and was prominent throughout before quickening up in pleasing fashion to beat Ché Guevara by 12 lengths with Treasulier (who had shown some promise under rules in Ireland) another 15 lengths back in 3rd. Maybe I was right after all...well, I don't know about that. However this son of Alderbrook is going the right way and I will not be surprised if he builds on this promise in 2005.
THROWAPARTY
b,g. Thowra (FR) - Basic Fun
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Ali Tory
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This five-year-old son of Thowra was only given start last season, however it was a hugely promising one being held up in rear before making steady progress in the last mile to finish 3rd behind Blackandblue (btn. 7 ½ lengths). There is plenty to come and assuming he has remained sound in the interim, must have strong claims in Maiden company in 2005.
TICTAC (FR)
ch,g. Beyssac (FR) - Native d´Acres (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Ian Johnson
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ When I learnt that this son of Beyssac had joined Martin Pipe after winning a couple of races in France as a four-year-old, I waited expectantly...and waited...and waited. I must profess I thought he was no longer with us until I noted that he had gone into training with David Pipe last season. Despite his absence, he was unsurprisingly as ready as you can get them at Cottenham at the first day of the meeting and despite being briefly challenged at half-way, he drew steadily clear to beat Aughmor River by 15 lengths in a time a second slower than the Mens Open on that card. He bounced next time out at Barbary Castle and was sold to present connections. However, he proved that the Cottenham success wasn't a fluke when running prominently before taking it up 3 out, eventually beating Royal Barge by 2 lengths to land a Men's Open at Llanfrynach in March in a time only 0.3 of a second slower than that achieved by Upton Adventure in the Ladies race on that card. He failed to complete on his last start in Hunter Chase company at Ludlow, however there are plenty of opportunities for him in Open company, particularly in Wales and it's border areas as long as connections are realistic in terms of his placement. He also may be worth considering in short-distance Hunter Chases.
TOUJOURS
ch,g. Toulon - Kept in the Dark
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Jenny Gordon
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Toujours retains his place in the list, having remained unbeaten last season since his inclusion in this list, easily landing his Maiden at Charing in March before brushing aside his rivals in Restricted company at Godstone and most recently when hardly coming off the bridle to beat Glenmont in a Club Conditions race at Aldington in April. This promising seven-year-old son of Toulon is definitely going the right way and should add to his tally of successes in 2005.
USEDTOBEASWEETBOY
b,g. Sylvan Express - Royal Justice
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: P. Richardson
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I like every now and again to take a chance and I think this one is most definitely the one this time. There won't be many features of this nature that will include a horse with the form figures 'PUF' with comments such as 'not jump well' and 'reluctant to race' in the write-ups. That said, there is no doubt that this five-year-old son of Sylvan Express did hint at having ability, most noticeably last time out at Garthorpe in May when he was staying on in 4th place only 10 lengths behind the leaders when falling at the 13th. This horse needs to polish up his act, however if he does we might well have something to celebrate at some stage of the 2005 campaign.
WELLHESEEMEDSOLOW
br,g. Good Thyne (USA) - Infanta Helena
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Robert Roswell
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Opportunities initially may be limited for this ex-Irish pointer who did nothing wrong last season, winning both starts at Bonvilston and Trecoed. However as he landed a Maiden and Restricted last term, opportunities will be less if he has not come on this summer. His saving grace could be his ability to act on a quick surface which does mean whatever happens, that he will get opportunities to get his head in front, particularly at the back-end of the season. Hopefully though, he is a little better than that.

ENTRIES
Here are a few who ran last week, plus a couple from this week's entries;

BLUE MAGNUM (FR)
b,g. Pistolet Bleu - Dalticia (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Stewart Pike
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Blue Magnum caught my eye amongst this week's meetings. Blue Magnum is a son of Pistolet Bleu, out of the mare Dalticia, which makes him a half-brother to winning hurdler S´Assagir, who won a couple of races with Nicky Henderson a few seasons ago. This un-raced five-year-old is sure to have been well schooled and will hopefully show us some promise before the end of the season.
CABER
Celtic Swing - Arusha
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: C W W Dupont
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I'll be hoping that Caber will be another "newcomer" to win in this discipline this season. This five-year-old son of Celtic Swing, has already had a few runs last year when trained by Oliver Sherwood. His best effort was when he came home second behind Celtic Boy at Worcester in April, [btn. 10lengths], and whilst this isn´t exactly the strongest bit of jump form you'll see, it does suggest he has potential, which hopefully we will see before the end of the current campaign.
DOUBLE ANGE (FR)
b,g. Double Bed (FR) - La Mésange (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: D Parker
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Double Ange is an interesting recruit to this discipline. This son of Double Bed, is out the mare La Mésange (FR) , [a daughter of Olmeto], who has produced several winning chasers, the most noteworthy of those being Mister Ange, a multi-times winner in France. Double Ange has shown a fair level of form in France when trained by Jean-Paul Gallorini and won over both codes, most recently when winning the Prix de la Vendee (claiming steeple´CH) at Cagnes-Sur-Mer in January '03 by a distance. He hasn't raced since coming fourth behind Patterson in a claiming hurdle at Enghien-Soisy in January '04, however he doesn't have too many miles on the clock and could do well in this discipline if he is realistically placed.
IT´SALLINTHESTARS
Fourstars Allstar (USA) - Vita Veritas
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Nigel Bloom
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ It´Sallinthestars is one of only a few horses that we have selected this week that ran at last week's meeting at Cottenham on 03.01.05. This six-year-old had only run once last term before running in the second division of the younger horses' Maiden, however he was given a lovely introduction making steady headway after behind held up in rear, eventually staying on in eye-catching style to finish third behind To The Top, [btn. 11lengths]. This son of Fourstars Allstar (USA) is surely to come one for this experience and must have a good chance of, at the very least, winning a maiden before the end of the season.
JANITURE (FR)
gr,m. Turgeon (USA) - Majaway (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs Sarah Dunsdon
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Janiture could develop into one of the better recruits to join this discipline this season. This eight-year-old mare has shown plenty of form under rules, initially winning over hurdles when trained in France, before she joined Paul Nicholls's yard, where after a shaky start, she did manage two wins last term at Wincanton and Plumpton, and was last seen coming home eleventh behind Tango Royal in the Nicholson Holman Cup Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in April '04. This daughter of Turgeon was rated 125 on that start, a lot higher than many horses will achieve in points and as long as she hasn´t regressed must have good chance of winning some races between the flags although connections are surely thinking more in terms of her running in Hunter Chases.
MARIA GIGI
b,g. Rakaposhi King - Lady Claudia
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs Susan Humphreys
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Maria Gigi is another newcomer to added to this week's list. This five-year-old son of Rakaposhi King is out of the mare Lady Claudia, [a daughter of Good Thyne (USA)], and appears to have plenty of stamina in his pedigree. He does appeal on this alone and it'll be interesting to see how he turns out this season.
MOONSHINE SURPRISE
b,g. Moonax - Balliniska Beauty
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: David Pipe
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ As we stated last week, we do like to add newcomers to the list, and occasionally this will be because of the pedigree or the trainer involved. Moonshine Surprise fulfils both of these criteria, as this five-year-old son of Moonax is by Balliniska Beauty, [a daughter of Roselier], which suggests that there should be plenty of stamina in his pedigree. I don't hold high expectation for him at present, however I will be disappointed if he doesn´t show some promise before the end of the season.
NOBLE DEED
b,g. Lord Americo - Legal Statement
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs T J Hill
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Noble Deed is another horses that we have selected this week that ran at last week's meeting at Cottenham on 03.01.05. This eight-year-old son Lord Americo had only shown a little promise under rules when trained by Henrietta Knight, however he made a bold bid to land Division Two of the Open Maiden, making a lot of the running before weakening on the run-in, narrowly going down to defeat at the hands of Cmewin, [btn. ¾length]. Its hard to know what the form amounts to, however he clearly operate in this grade and will surely go close to landing a similar event on this evidence.
STROMNESS (USA)
ch,g. Trempolino (USA) - Caithness (USA)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: A C Kemp
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Former top-class hurdler Stromness attempted to get back on the wining trail in the Ladies' Open on Cottenham' s card on 03.01.05. This former winner of the Grade 1 Martell Sefton Novices' Hurdle had not made the same impact over the larger obstacles and had not been seen since coming home thirteenth behind Creon in the Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle) at the 2004 Cheltenham Festival. However this son of Trempolino ran really well here, travelling nicely in the rear before making smooth progress to lead three out. He couldn't sustain that effort and weakened close home, eventually coming home fourth behind Chasing the Bride, [btn. 4 ¾lengths], however he appears to retain plenty of his form ability, and that will surely be placed t o good effect in similar company during the remainder of the campaign
WILD KNIGHT
b,g. Jurado (USA) - Knight's Maid
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: J A Keighley
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Wild Knight is surely on a recovery mission, in the hope that pointing may encourage him to polish up a somewhat tarnished reputation. There is no doubt that he has ability, as he demonstrated when beating Janus Du Cochet to land a novice chase at Wincanton in December '03, however he not build on the promise he showed over hurdles during the 2002/03 campaign and has blundered himself out of far too many races... a 10½length third placing behind Alvino at Wincanton in April '04 may be a good effort for some horses, however you do get the impression that he is better than this. That said son of Jurado was 120-rated when in Paul Nicholls care and could be rejuvenated if he takes to this discipline.

ӘÞOINT NOTEBOOK #01
Thursday, December 30.
HORSES OF 2004 [Part I]
Here is part one of the horses we're hoping will be amongst the winners who ran in 2004 - Part two will be posted next week;

ABABOÙ (FR)
ch.g. Sÿnefos (USA) - Racine Carree (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs L. Latchford
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Ababoù makes it into this feature for the third season in succession after two successes last season including a win for the first time in Hunter Chase company at Market Rasen in March. His form tailed off afterwards, however his win-to-run ration of seven wins from twelve starts speaks for itself and I believe he will continue to prosper, particularly when he runs in open company
ARDLING
b. m. Broussard (USA) - May-Ling
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Graham Lavis
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Ardling is one to look out for in maiden company this winter. This six-year-old has joined present connections after hinting at having some ability despite coming home a distant fifth behind Blonde Ambition in a 5 & 6-Year-Old Mares Maiden at Naas in March '04. She is sure to come on for that experience, particularly as she has joined such a good yard and is sure to make more of a impression in the UK in 2005
ASTHEFELLOWSAID
ch.g. Glacial Storm (USA) - Celia's Fancy
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Sara Hickman
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Asthefellowsaid makes it into this feature for the second successive year after three successes at Higham, Detling and Parham; his most recent effort where he rallied after looking beaten to beat Charlie's Angel by a length. This seven-year-old looks open to further improvement and is sure to be well-placed by connections this season.
AS DE LA GARENNE (FR)
b, g. Sleeping Car (FR) - Maria Theresa (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Robert Waley-Cohen
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ As De La Garenne made it into this feature last, despite this son of Sleeping Car, out of the mare Maria Theresa not having made it to the racecourse. He only made one appearance trailing home in maiden company, however he appeals so much to us on pedigree, that he deserves another chance to prove us right .. finger's crossed eh!!!
AUNTIE KATHLEEN
gr,m.. Terimon - Lady High Sheriff
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: P. J. Finn
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Auntie Kathleen made one appearance last season at Wadebridge in March when rallying under strong driving to beat That's My Boy in a Maiden by a length. She gave the impression that she would be open to further improvement and it is interesting that she has not appeared under rules for Martin Pipe this season. If she appears this season, we are sure she is likely to add to this tally, or at the very least, win in Restricted company.
BALÅU
br.g. Primitive Rising (USA) - Say Daphne
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Alison Hickman
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Balåu made a promising start to his career between the flags, easily landing an Open Maiden at Detling in March before an unfortunate experience at Penshurst when taking a heavy fall two out for which he laid down for ten minutes before getting back to his feet. Connections understandably gave him a chance to get over this experience and he repaid their kindness with a promising fourth behind Sutton Courtney in quite a decent Restricted race at Kingston Blount in May. He is definitely a horse with some potential, however he will need to brush up his jumping to maximise it.
BATHTIME BOYS
gr. g. Relief Pitcher - Path's Sister
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Caroline Bailey
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Caroline Bailey's six-year-old showed plenty of promise in two attempts in Maiden company last season, finishing 2nd on both attempts at Dingley, the most recent being when coming home second behind Sandy Lark in May (btn. 5 lengths). This half-brother to winning pointer Bedtime Boys is bound to have learnt a lot from those experiences and hopefully will be well capable of winning races in 2005.
BEET DE BOB
br.g Bob Back (USA) - Beet Statement
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Sue Busby
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Beet De Bob was slightly disappointing last season having shown plenty of promise in Ireland in 2003, winning in two occasions. He only made two visits to the racecourse, consisting of a modest third place in Confined company at Chaddesley Corbett in February as well as a short-lived effort at Guilsborough in April where he unseated his rider at the first. He did break blood vessels last season which may explain his below-par efforts and arguably deserves another chance in light of his previous efforts in Ireland....definitely one to take interest in if he bounces back to form.
BEST ACCOLADE
b,g. Oscar - Made Of Talent
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Sheila Crow
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Sheila Crow will have few entries in this list this season, the first of these being this five-year-old who remains unbeaten after successes in Maiden company at Tabley in April before stepping up to Restricted company at Heslaker a month later where he showed great tenacity to pip Gentleman Charles by a short head. This son of Oscar is clearly going the right way and you'd like to believe that further success is likely in 2005.
BILINGUAL
b,g. Prince Daniel (USA) - Gymcrak Cyrano
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Ian Stark
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Ian Stark's five-year-old makes it into the list for the second season in succession even though he hasn't been seen since beating Three Spires in a Maiden at Friar's Haugh in February. Admittedly, he had a hard race that day which might explain his absence, however he hopefully will make it onto the racecourse this season.
BILLY WHITELIES
gr. g. Ala Hounak - Mirella Parsons
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Scott Joynes
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I had the good fortune of seeing this almost-white son of Ala Hounak once last season where he made a few too many mistakes when weakening close home when odds on at Maisemore Park at the end of March. He has previously fallen at the last when well-clear at Didmarton and ended his season when again filling the runners-up post back at Maisemore Park at the beginning of May. He should have lost his maiden tag by now and you'd like to think that it is the least he is able to achieve in 2005.
BODDIDLEY
b,g. Be My Native (USA) - Boardwalker
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Chloe Roddick
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Boddidley 's future may ultimately lay under rules with owner Paul Nichols, however he could be capable of running up a sequence between the flags this season, if he builds on his first season efforts which began with a win in Maiden company at Stoneaston in March which supplemented by two failures to complete the course at Woodford in April and Flete Park a month later. However, on each occasion, he travelled well before either making a serious error or being brought down. Those last two efforts were in Restricted company and if he improves his jumping technique, he should at the very least win a race of that description.
BORDER FUSION
b,g. Weld - Monteviot
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Gary Hamner
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Border Fusion has only had one run between the flags, however it was a highly-promising one at Eaton Hall in March where he made up a lot of ground from half-way to lead on the bit at the last, eventually beating Heathyard´s Element by 2 ½ lengths. He hasn't appeared since, however is likely to add to that tally (granted normal improvement) in 2005.
BRER BEAR
b,g. Perpendicular - Nestfield
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Emma Insley
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Brer Bear might prove to be a poor choice this term, particularly when you consider that in the first of his three attempts last season, he failed to complete and never at any stage gave any indication that a win was likely in 2004. However, on his final start at Lockinge, a totally different version of this son of Perpendicular came to light and after being held up made strong headway to lead five out, eventually slamming Nocash by 15 lengths with the third and fourth placed horses well behind. If this version of Brer Bear appears anywhere this season, it is hard to imagine him not at least winning in Restricted company.
BUCKET AWL
ch, g. Lír - Upham Close
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Alan Walter
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Bucket Awl retains his place in the list as its possible that with a full season under his belt he might improve on two encouraging efforts last term, the best of these probably being his run at Great Trethew 'in April, where this five-year-old son of Lír was always prominent throughout and was second, holding every chance, when falling at the second last. He demonstrated that day that he has the ability to a maiden and hopefully he will go close to doing this at some stage in 2005.
CANON BRIDGE
ch, g. Definate Article - Hit For Six
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Nikki Hughes
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Canon Bridge made the transition from a promising Novice Hurdler to a potentially useful pointer, winning each of his three starts, beginning with a win in Maiden company at Erw Lon in February followed by victories at Llanfrynach in March and Bonvilston a month later. He didn't race afterwards, however he appeared to have knocked himself last time out which may explain his absence and hopefully he returns fighting fit in 2005.
CAPYBARA
b,g. Commanche Run - The Pledger
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs R. Arthur
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Capybara only made one appearance on the racecourse last season, however he built on the promise he'd shown in 2003 when outstaying Birkwood when landing a Maiden at Friar's Haugh in March. If he is sound, you'd like to think he could add to this tally in 2005.
CARAIYNI
b,g. Be My Chief (USA) - Caraiyma
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Roger Wernham
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This seven-year-old son of Be My Chief took a while to justify his addition to the әPOINT Notebook last season when beating Dreamy Battle on his fourth attempt in this country at Kingston Blount in April. This ex-Irish pointer is progressing with each experience and hopefully will add to that tally in 2005.
CHÉ GUEVARA
b. h. Machiavellian - Girl From Ipanema
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: James Tuck
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This ex-Irish pointer arguably deserves to get into the winner's enclosure this term, finishing second on each of his four starts at Didmarton, Garnons, Paxford and Maisemore Park. He is no great shakes, however he did show improvement with each run and whilst it's possible he may be a 'tame finisher' , he might get his head in front at least once.
CHRISTIE BEAMISH
br.g. Jolly Jake (NZ) - Ballinatona Bridge
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Paul Jones
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This seven-year-old son of Jolly Jake improved on the promise shown in 2003, winning on both starts; a Restricted at Garthorpe in March followed by a win I was fortunate enough to see at Maisemore Park at the end of March where he quickened impressively 2 out, to beat William Lionheart by 12 lengths. This seven-year-old is lightly-raced, however he is going the right way and is definitely one to watch out for in 2005 and could be good enough to run in Hunter Chase company by the end of the season.
COFFEE MORNING
b,g. Beneficial - Phar From Men
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Giles Smyly
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old son of Beneficial has only made one racecourse appearance to date, however he showed plenty of promise when coming home fourth behind Spanish Dolphin at Larkhill at the end of January (btn. 29 lengths). He did rather blunder his way round that day and as a result, assuming he improves his technique, could well be capable of further improvement in 2005.
COMFORTABLY NUMB (FR)
br.g. Charnwood Forest - Regalante
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: J. S. Delahooke
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ We included Comfortably Numb in our feature last season and whilst he failed to get his head in front, he improved with each of his three starts, concluding with a solid third-placing at Eaton Hall behind the aforementioned Border Fusion. We haven't lost the faith and will not be surprised if he gets his head in front in 2005.
DENVALE
b,g. Denel (FR) - Brackenvale
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Caroline Bailey
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Caroline Bailey's six-year-old justified his inclusion in our one-to-jump feature by winning two of his four starts last season at Guilsborough and most recently Garthorpe where he stayed on to beat Heisamodel to win his first race in Intermediate company. This ultra-consistent pointer should progress again this term and it would be disappointing if he didn't add to this tally in 2005.
DON´TTELLTHETAXMAN
b,g. Executive Perk - Calfstown Night
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Tim Reed
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Don´ttellthetaxman is included in one of our features for the third year in succession, even though he failed to win last season. In fact, this seven-year-old son of Executive Perk only made one appearance in 2004. However, he wasn't at all disgraced when coming home sixth behind Imp's Way in his first attempt in Restricted at Duncombe Park in February. He clearly isn't easy to train however he seems to still retain some ability and therefore deserves another opportunity in 2005.
EARL OF BUCKINGHAM
b,g. Alderbrook - Arctic Oats
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: S J Gilmore
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Earl of Buckingham retains his place in this feature despite getting his head in front in 2004. This six-year-old son of Alderbrook, out of Arctic Oats, [a daughter of Oats, who won four races under rules during the late-eighties / early-nineties], is related to useful handicapper Duke of Buckingham, who has shown fair form over fences this winter. Earl of Buckingham may well not be as good, however he is steadily improving with experience and did finish in the frame on his last two starts at Dingley and Clifton-on-Dunsmore. He's going the right way and should add to this tally in 2005.
EASE THE PRESSURE
b,g. Roselier (FR) - Height Of Pressure
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Richard Barber
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Richard Barber's seven-year-old retains his position in this list after another promising campaign. Although he only raced three times, he netted two successes beginning with victory in a Ladies Open at Milbourne St Andrew followed by success two weeks later in a similar heat at Bishop's Court. He took his chance in Mixed Open company on his final start of the season and held every chance until the last, eventually weakening to finish second behind Hobbycyr (btn. 8 lengths) in March. A slight concern that he didn't race afterwards, however six wins from seven attempts speaks for itself and you'd have to believe that further success will come this way if he is tried in this grade in 2005.
EIGHTY DAYS
b,g. Air Quest - Valley Hope
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Morag Neill
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ We´ve added Eighty Days to the әPOINT portfolio last term, even though this five-year-old son of Air Quest, (out of an Altountash mare), has yet to race under any code of racing. He rewarded us with two wins from attempts in Maiden and Restricted company as well as finishing second on his final start when splitting Comanche Law and Balisteros in a Ladies´ Open at Tranwell in April. He is sure to build on this promise this term and should add to his tally, [granted some luck in running] in 2005.
EUROGAEDEL
b,g. Eurobus - Lisbawn
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Cherie Cunningham
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Eurogaedel is one of several promising youngsters added to the list from last season's new recruits. This son of Eurobus only raced once last term in an Open Maiden at Ampton in March. After attracting some support in the market, this five-year-old showed a lot of tenacity to stay on gamely to beat Arctic Snip by 15 lengths. This wasn't the greatest of races, however he appears to possess an abundance of stamina which should see him in good stead this time around.
EUWILUWIL
b,g. Eurobus - Midnight Romance
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: P. J. Finn
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This ex-Irish pointer will spend another year in this feature having justified our initial confidence with victories in an Open Maiden at Buckfastleigh in March and most recently success in Restricted company where he beat Askers Jack by 2 lengths at Stafford Cross in April. With former trainer David Pipe having handed in his licence, it's unclear what he will be doing this winter. However, were he to reappear in this grade, I would be hopeful that he is capable of building on last season's efforts.
FANE COUNSEL
b,g. Leading Counsel (USA) - Fane Heights
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Sheila Crow
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old ex-Irish pointer gained a huge reputation prior to his first races in the UK, (which is partly why we put him in the әPOINT Notebook last year). On his first two runs at Horseheath, he looked a quality recruit when winning a Restricted and Intermediate race. However, the wheels appeared to come off afterwards and I had the misfortune to see him cock his jaw and run out at Brampton Bryan at the end of March and he subsequently disappointed again when coming home only third behind Minella Silver in a Mens Open at Chaddesley Corbett (btn. 9 1/2 lengths). It's quite possible that might be as good as he is, however he left such a lasting impression that we feel he does deserve the benefit of the doubt now.
FEDERAL CASE (FR)
b, g. Nikos - Miss Normania (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Ruth Hayter
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ As he was the last horse we cut from our "ONE TO JUMP" feature, we had no hesitation in adding Federal Case to the әPOINT portfolio last season. This six-year-old son of Nikos only has one run to his name, when under Enda Bolger 's care in a 4&5yo Maiden point-to-point at Eyrecourt in May ´03. On that occasion Federal Case travelled well before inflicting a 3lengths defeat to Live Music and thirteen other rivals. He didn´t build on that in five attempts for present connections, however he did finish in the frame on three occasions, so hopefully can use those efforts as a platform to build on this time around.
FLASH POINT
br, g. Executive Perk - Shine Your Light
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Ollie Bush
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Flash Point could be a horse to follow in 2005 if he builds on his only start to date in a division of the Maiden on Wadebridge' s card in April, where he was held up before making smooth progress to lead two out, eventually running on to beat Prioritisation by 1 ½ lengths. That could be decent form and if he has come on for that experience has high hopes of adding to the tally in 2005.
GREAT JUBILEE
ch.g. Beneficial - Red Donna
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Gina Weare
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old only ran three times last time, however progressed with each effort, easily landing a Restricted at Higham at the beginning of the season bouncing back before coming third on his second start at Charing before making most of the runner before accounting for former King George VI winner Àlgan at Parham in March. Not sure what the reasons for his absence were afterwards, however this son of beneficial is going the right way and is definitely the sort who should add to his form figures in 2005.
GREGORY PECKORÝ
b,g. Teamster - Vill Alba
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Jelly Nolan
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ For me, part of the attraction of this feature is the ability to indicate horses who may only have hinted that they may possess ability, who occasionally go on to fulfil that potential. I'll be hoping that this son of Teamster comes into this category. He had shown some promise under rules before lining up in an Open Maiden at Ashorne in May. Although he ran well, this six-year-old was always doing a little bit too much during the first two thirds of the race and this eventually told on him as he began to weaken from the 14th fence, eventually coming down a few fences later. Hopefully he is a little wiser as a result after that unfortunate experience and if he learns to conserve his energy, or at the very least economise his effort there is a chance that he'll get into the winner's enclosure at some stage this term - 2 1/2 mile Maidens seem to be the most likely race for him at present.
GUNNABALLRIGHT
ch, g. Gunner B (11.3f) - Mistress Corrado
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Paul Jones
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old made a brief appearance, almost at the end of the campaign, running twice in seven days, appearing to show little aptitude for the game and coming down at the 8th at Eyton-On-Severn on the 3rd of May 2004 before justifying strong market support to land a similar heat at Kingston Blount five days later where he beat Rockford by 12 lengths. Hopefully the summer break will not be lost on him and if he is able to campaign for a full season, may well be capable of adding to the tally in 2005.
HEISAMODEL
b,g. Balla Cove - Liffeyside Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: John Boulter
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Heisamodel retains his position in this feature. This seven-year-old son of Balla Cove ran four times last term, having been bought after showing promise in Ireland, steadily progressing after each effort, failing to complete on his first two starts at Bishop´s Court and Littlewindsor before coming home second behind Denvale in an Intermediate race at Garthorpe in April, before finally getting his head in front on his final start in a similar race at Trebudannon, where he stayed on to beat State Medlar by 6lengths. Clearly he is going the right way and hopefully will add to this tally during the 2005 campaign.
HUNCA MUNCA
b. m. Presenting - Tulladante
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Laura Pomfret
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Hunca Munca was added to the әPOINT notebook last term after she'd shown plenty of promise in the Mares' Maiden on Mollington 's card on 22/02/04. This five-year-old daughter of Presenting, was always prominent from flagfall and was in touch when falling at the eleventh. A victory over the ill-fated Thanks Jim at Brocklesby Park justified her inclusion, and whilst she disappointed since deserve an opportunity to atone in 2005
I AM SAID I
b,g. Presenting - Moonlight Romance
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: C. J. Bennett
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I Am Said I had a good season for former trainer David Pipe. This ex-Irish pointer ran seven times last term, winning on four occasions beginning at Wadebridge in March before posting a hat-trick of successes at the end of the campaign at Holnicote, Kingston St Mary and most recently a hard-fought success, where after being well clear two out, he weakened rapidly on the long run-in, eventually only beating Milly Henry by 2 lengths. He didn't run well when attempting to run under rules at the beginning of this year's campaign and was subsequently sold at Doncaster's summer sale. If his talent can be harnessed, he is still capable of winning races between the flags, however he requires more of a watching brief than many in this feature.
KASILIA (FR)
b,g. Silver Rainbow - Basilia (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Tim Brown
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Silver Rainbow is a fascinating recruit to pointing as this ex-French chaser has run really well in each of his four attempts in this grade, finishing in the frame on three occasions, including in hunter chase company on his last two starts, most recently when coming home second behind Bohemian Spirit (btn. 8 lengths). He is still to get his head in front yet a bare look at his form suggests that he would surely be good enough to land a prize in Maiden company if ever given the opportunity. Connections are entitled to do as they please, however if he ever gets a chance in Maiden company, it'll be a surprise if he doesn't get the win he so justly deserves.
KĮLLARD POINT
b,g. Old Vic - Chic And Elite
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs S Carsberg
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I like this son of Old Vic who ran three times last season getting only as far as the eighth on his debut at Horseheath at the beginning of February before coming out two weeks later and justifying odds of even money to land a 2 1/2 mile maiden at Mollington. He made one other appearance at Dingley in April where for the first time he gave clear indication that he might be a horse to follow when beating Mind The Gate to win his Restricted in a time two seconds slower than useful pointer Shanavogh took to win the Mens Open on the same card. Further improvement is almost guaranteed and it'll be a huge surprise if he doesn't add to the tally in 2005.
KING BARRY (FR)
br.g. Cadoudal (FR) - Leonie Des Champs (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: David Parker
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Despite being French-bred, this son of Cadoudal had no previous racecourse experience before he lined up in an Open Maiden at Corbridge in March. Despite this, there are clearly some punters who knew that this horse had plenty of potential as he was supported into 4/5 favouritism before being ridden out to easily account for River Alder by 5 lengths. He was given one further opportunity last term in Restricted company, this time at Tranwell in April and after being backed into even-money favouritism, travelled well before taking it up two out, eventually running on to beat Coomakista by 5 lengths. This is clearly a useful individual and as long as connections aren't tempted to race him under rules this term (other than in Hunter Chases) he is almost certain to find further opportunities in 2005.
KŸALAMI (FR)
gr. g. Royal Charter (FR) - Reine Margot III (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: R Kelvin-Hughes
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Kÿalami retains his place in this feature having finished in the frame on both completed starts last term at Larkhill and Kilworthy. He failed to complete on both his other starts, ironically enough, coming down at the second last at both Bishop's Court and in Hunter Chase company at Uttoxeter where he gave the impression that he was coming to the end of his tether which may have ultimately resulted in him coming down. He clearly does have ability though and there must surely be opportunities for him to lose his Maiden tag in 2005.

ENTRIES
As was the case last year, we will also post horses from the list of entries... as well as a few new recruits who raced in Ireland last winter.

ÄLFLORIANO
b,g. Alflora (IRE) - Swallowfield
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs G. B. Walford
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Älfloriano could hopefully be a winning maiden for this feature over the coming months. This five-year-old son of Alflora is out of the dam Swallowfield, which makes him a half-brother to winning bumper/hurdler Aérion. He has yet to show anything near that ability in two runs for Oliver Sherwood, however that experience will not be lost on him and we won't be surprised if he doesn´t get a lot closer to the winner's enclosure in 2005.
BACK WITH A BANG
b,g. Oscar - Trapper Jean
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Robert Rosewell
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Back with a Bang doesn´t really have much to recommend him having joined present connections after three runs in Ireland, where he failed to complete in maidens at Clonmel in February '04 and at the Horse And Jockey meeting at Thurles a month later. He did come seventh on his final start at Ballindenisk however he owes his place in this list more to the fact that he has reportedly benefited from a wind operation which may result in him leaving his Irish from well behind him in 2005.
BEAU GOSSE (FR)
b,g. Vertical Speed (FR) - Amie Jolie (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: S. N. Wilshire
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ As was the case in previous editions of the әPOINT notebook, we occasionally include horses that have yet to make it to the racecourse, but appeal to us maybe because of their pedigree, or because of the owner/trainer combination involved. This five-year-old son of Vertical Speed is a combination of both factors, and although the dam Amie Jolie, [a daughter of Cadoudal], hasn't produced any winner recently, her progeny has shown plenty of ability over the big French courses. I don't expect an immediate impact, however I wont be surprised if we see some promise from him before the end of the season
BRIAR (CZE)
b,g. House Rules (USA) - Bright Angel (AUT)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs M. Norton
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Briar never really built on the promise shown as a juvenile when coming from the Czech Republic, only winning a juvenile hurdle at Folkestone in December '02. He hasn´t been seen since running a lot better than a 27lengths defeat by Glacial Evening might initially suggest, and I've always felt that we never saw the best of him and he might do well in this sphere especially if he is given the opportunity to race on soft/heavy ground, which he appeared to revel on when trained by Mark Pitman
GAÏAC (FR)
b,g. Passing Sale (FR) - Ustitine (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: K. Rowlands
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Gaïac is an interesting recruit from France, who may do well in this discipline. This ten-year-old son of Passing Sale was a consistent sort winning two of his twelve starts at Auteuil, who was consistently placed in claiming company when last seen at the end of 2003, most recently when coming home second behind Insolent De Cotte in a 2 ½ Mile claiming race, [btn. 4lengfths]. He is no great shakes, however his consistency, [if translated to points] may well stand him in good stead, particularly if connections place him realistically.
HIGH CHIMES
b,g. Naheez (USA) - Forward Gal
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Sheila Crow
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old has joined present connections after having run three times in Ireland last term, failing to compete on his debut at Knockanard in February, before building on that effort to come home fourth behind Uradodo in a 5 & 6-Y-O Geldings Maiden at Dromahane at the beginning of April. Connections took him back the same venue for a similar event sixteen days later and he did not let them down, staying on to beat Kingfisher Tom a length. This son of Naheez is clearly going to have improved during the summer and appears to be a horse to follow this term.
HONEST YER HONOUR
b,g. Witness Box (USA) - Castle Duchess
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Caroline Beasley
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Honest Yer Honour appears to be an interesting recruit to the pointing/hunter chase ranks having shown good form when trained in Ireland, winning twice at Punchestown and Leopardstown as well as solid runs in defeats behind the likes of Brave Inca and most recently Randwick Roar at Fairyhouse in April '04. This 120-rated hurdler is clearly useful and could be one to follow if he translates that ability to the larger obstacles.
HONOR AND GLORY
br, g. Past Glories - Scalby Anna
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs G. B. Walford
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Honor And Glory is another "unknown quantity" we've added to the әPOINT notebook. This five-year-old son of Past Glories, is by Scalby Anna; (a daughter of Sir Mago), and hails from a yard, who not only ensures that they are well prepared, but have a knack of getting gradual improvement from their charges. Definitely a horse to monitor over the coming campaign.
HOULIHAN´S FREE
b,g. Gothland (FR) - Yawa Prince
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Richard Barber
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Houlihan´s Free could well develop into an exciting prospect for 2005. This five-year-old son of Gothland has only had two runs last season in Ireland, pulling up at Áthlacca in March, before landing a 5-Year-Old Geldings Maiden at Dromahane in May, beating Justthetwoofus by 2lengths. Its difficult not to imagine Richard Barber getting further improvement from him and I won't be surprised if doesn´t get into the winner's enclosure more than once this term.
IKRENEL ROYAL (FR)
b,g. Bricąssar (USA) - Kreneldore (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs Judy Wilson
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ When Ikrenel Royal bounded up the Sandown Park hill to land the Daily Telegraph Novices' Chase in April 2001, many foresaw a bright future for this son of Bricąssar. Things however haven´t got right for him since and he has only made four appearances showing little of the promise that saw him come home 12lngths ahead of Crocadee. As he takes a big drop in grade this 125-rated eight-year-old surely will find opportunities between the flags/in Hunter Chase company ... won't he?!!
KING PLATO
b,g. King's Ride - You Are A Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: J. M. Turner
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Any new recruit to the Turner stable deserves a second glance and this former inmate of Micky Hammond has the very least demonstrated that he possesses ability winning twice over hurdles at Worcester and Bangor-On-Dee in August '02. This son of King's Ride has not been seen out since pulling up at Hexham in May '04, however as long as this 95-rated seven-year-old has not regressed could well be placed to good effect this season.
LANCE TOI (FR)
br.g. Lampon (FR) - Devant Spring (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Mrs B L Shaw
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Lance Toi caught my eye amongst the entries for the meeting at Cottenham on 03.01.05. This son of Lampon never won in eleven attempts for Edward O'Grady during the last two campaigns, however this son of Lampon has shown signs of ability, not least when he came home second behind Cloney Lord in a handicap chase at Ballinrobe in July '04. This 86 rated five-year-old is open to plenty of improvement and could well finally lose him maiden tag in this discipline during the current campaign.
MISS SALLYFIELD
b,m. Mister Lord (USA) - Rose Of Solway
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: Sheila Crow
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old brings an enviable record to present connections since joining them from Ireland, having run four times, winning her final last at Ballindenisk in May '04; as well as coming home second on each of her other three starts. She looks to be an ideal candidate for the mare's series or races and could run up a sequence.
TELL´EM NOTING
b,g. Treasure Hunter - Imperial Butterfly
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: David Phelan
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Tell´Em Noting is an eight-year-old son of Treasure Hunter, who failed to win under rules in Ireland, and also failed to complete four out of five point-to-points however on his other start he spread-eagled his field to land a Confined Maiden at Kilfeacle in January '04. Clearly present connections saw some potential and as a result he tries his luck on these shores this season. Previous form suggests he will be seen to best effect on a sound surface.
THEATRE CALL
b,g. Old Vic - Jennycomequick
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ --: G. C. Maundrell
¦¨¨”I¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Theatre Call is another to have caught my eye amongst the entries for the meeting at Cottenham on 03.01.05, even though this six-year-old has yet to show anything in six attempts when in Jim Old' s care last season. He is however a half-brother, [by Old Vic], to Grade 2 winning hurdler Leinster, so all may not be lost ... Hopefully he'll show some promise in Maiden company this season.
