"ӘPOINT Notebook 2006"
by "Į ÞOINTӘЯ"

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent each-way claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

ƏÞOINT NOTEBOOK ´06 Ω [ PART #03 ]
Friday, January 20, 2006.
Here are the horses that we´d like to add to the əPOINT Notebook who we´ve selected based on their performances in 2005. From next Thursday, we will be producing a list of horses purely based on form show in 2006 or newcomers we´ve liked based on pedigree.

bullet A BOY NAMED SIOUX
b,g. Little Bighorn - Gayable
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Emma Reed
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Little Bighorn had a good season between the flags in 2005, winning two of his three starts - a Confined Maiden at Tranwell in April before stepping up on that effort to easily land a Restricted race at Balcormo Mains two weeks later. Appears to be improving which is why we felt it necessary to include him on this season´s notebook.
bullet BUTLER´S BOY
b,g. Shambo - Scarlett O´Hara
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Christopher Sporborg
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I know very little about this four-year-old son of Shambo, however I remember watching his dam Scarlett O´Hara with several point-to-points in the East Anglia area and if Buster´s Boy has inherited only a little of her ability/tenacity, he will be able to put it to good effort at some stage over the next eighteen months.
bullet DONALD WILL DO
ch,g. Zaffaran (USA) - Jersey Pearl
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ John Hilsdon
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Donald Will Do made a promising reappearance at Barbary Castle on 15 January 2006 in Division II of the Horses and Geldings Maiden, settling in the rear before making steady headway from half-way to lead at the fifteenth. This son of Zaffaran still looked likeliest to win at the last, however he folded up close home and was nabbed by the winner Shepherd´s Hut, eventually going down by a length. Improvement is almost certainly likely and he doesn´t appear to need to improve much, if at all to be capable of winning a Maiden at some stage this season.
bullet FOXTON BROOK
br,g. Presenting - Martin´s Times
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Lynn Wilson
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Foxton Brook is a newcomer to pointing this season. This seven-year-old son of Presenting disappointed frankly last season when trained by Nicky Henderson, pulling up on his most recent start at Newbury in April 2005 having previously shown a little bit of promise the previous season in a bumper at Kempton in March before finishing 11th next month in the championship bumper at the Punchestown Festival. His current profile suggests that there may have been problems, however dropping down to this grade should be to his advantage and he could be a horse to note, particularly if he shows promise in say his first or second start.
bullet JUSTTHETWOOFUS
ch,g. Hubbly Bubbly (USA) - Glory Hunter
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Miss Lorraine Fry
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Justthetwoofus is a seven-year-old son of Hubby Bubbly who joins present connections having shown plenty of promise between the flags in Ireland and although he is yet to have won a race, he has finished second on five occasions. Arguably, the best of these efforts was when he finished second to Houlihan´s Free at Dromahane in May 2004. The Racing Post seems to indicate that he has joined Richard Barber´s yard. If that is correct, there are very few better than him to get the best out of this individual.
bullet KNOWHOW
bl,g. Mister Lord (USA) - Mossy Mistress
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Malcolm C. Denmark
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ It´s a real tragedy that every now and again, a potentially really good horse completely fails to live up to expectations due to injury. Knowhow probably can be added to that list as I can remember noting down this black gelding when staying on eye-catchingly to finish third behind Cappadrummin in a Bumper at Kempton in February 2002. To illustrate how poorly things seem to have gone, this nine-year-old has only run three more times in his life, the most recent occasion being when coming home 4th in a Novice Hurdle at Newbury in March 2003. There is no doubt in my mind that he will never fulfil his potential, however it´ll be even sadder if he isn´t up to winning in Maiden company this season. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to see him before the end of the season.
bullet LIAMOS
br,g. Desert Story - Lorme
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ R.H. York
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Liamos is the first horse we have chosen solely based on form shown in 2006. This six-year-old had hinted at having ability when finishing fourth in a bumper at Worcester in June 2005 and appeared to build on that effort when reappearing at Barbary Castle on January 15 2006 when always being prominent, before staying on at one pace to finish second to reasonably sure (btn. 1 1/4 lengths). The winner is probably a very useful horse potentially and therefore as long as he is not over-faced, it should not be too long before he wins a maiden in the not too distant future.
bullet NEVERBEPOORAGAIN
b,g. Classic Cliché - Scarlett O´Hara
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Christopher Sporborg
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Having included Buster´s Boy, [see above], in this list, I can´t really not add his older half-brother, who being by Classic Cliché is in my opinion the most stoutly bred/better prospect.
bullet PRETTY LADY ROSE
b,m. Perpendicular - Pandessa
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Miss Axelle Waldman
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ If I´m honest, I didn´t intend to put this mare into our feature, however it was only until I searched her credentials on the Racing Post database that I actually appreciated exactly how much this daughter of Perpendicular has probably improved since finishing tailed-off last in a Novice Hurdle behind Chase The Sunset at Worcester in July 2005 (beaten in excess of 100 lengths). I´m not suggesting that the Maiden she ran in at Barbary Castle on 14 January 2006 in any way compares to rules form, however it is encouraging to note how well this mare stayed on having been outpaced a mile out. As that race was over 4000 metres, I reasoned that this six-year-old could well find further improvement once allowed to race over 4800 metres and whilst I´m fairly certain she isn´t a world-beater, I equally wouldn´t be surprised if she won a Maiden, particularly a Mares Maiden some time in the next 18 months or so.
bullet QABAS (USA)
b,g. Swain - Classical Dance (CAN)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ C.J. Hitchings
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Former handicap hurdler Qabas drops to this discipline after showing ability when previously trained under rules by Peter Bowen, winning three hurdle races, the most recent at Uttoxeter in May 2005, achieving a rating of 112 on his most recent start. He disappointed on his only start over fences at Worcester in September, however it would be premature to judge him solely on that effort and it´s quite possible that he can be placed to win races in his grade as long as connections realistically place him.

ƏÞOINT NOTEBOOK ´06 Ω [ PART #02. - HORSES OF 2005 ]
Sunday, January 15, 2006.

Appears to be improving which is why we felt it necessary to include him on this season´s notebook.
bullet BEESNEEZ
b,g. Naheez (USA) - Kings Run
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Mike Daniell
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Naheez showed promise in his first campaign, finishing a respectable third behind Midnight Arrival in a 4000 metre maiden at Barbary Castle in April. Unfortunately, he attempted to duck out, crashing through the wing on his most recent start at Coldharbour and needs to prove he has not suffered any ill effect...but could be worth following if he manages to do this.
bullet BROWN COCKLE
b,g. Sovereign Water (FR) - Great Granny Smith
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Richard Barber
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Sovereign Water created a favourable impression when staying on strongly after two out, (having initially been held in the rear) to beat Who Else Knew in an Open Maiden at Woodford in April. There should be more to come from this five-year-old and it would be a surprise if he doesn´t win a race this season.
bullet BUSY ISIT
br,g. Busy Flight - Eaton's
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Peter Shaw
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Busy Flight only made one appearance last season, however it was a hugely encouraging effort, making steady progress from half-way before finishing a creditable second behind Eastworth Grange in a 4000 metre maiden at Stoneaston in March. He didn´t post the best round of jumping you´ll ever see but he appears to have a good engine and that may well become more evident one he has improved his technique.
bullet CHESTNUT HOUSE
ch,m. Compton Place - Peacock Feather
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Milson Robinson
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This daughter of Compton Place is probably a risqué entry in so much as she showed a little promise in a Maiden in Market Rasen in March. However, she ran atrociously a month later in a Mares´ Maiden at Clifton-On-Dunsmore, quickly losing touch before falling at the tenth fence. If we´re honest, we´re not overly keen on the horse that showed up last time, however the horse who showed up at Market Rasen could well land a Maiden if she has come on this season, and deserves a chance on that basis.
bullet CROOKED BROOK
b,g. Alderbrook - Furl
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Cherie Cunningham
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Crooked Brook is another entry into the əPOINT Notebook who has less than obvious claims as this son of Alderbrook only made one appearance last season, albeit a fleeting one, when crashing through the wing and unseating his rider at the fourth in a Maiden at Marks Tey in March. Bluntly, if I had not been there that day, Crooked Brook would not be in this feature, however I liked what I saw and if we give him a chance, who knows what he may achieve at the end of the season.
bullet DARTMEET
br,m. Presenting - Gladtogetit
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Sally Alner
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This daughter of Presenting would get into this sort of list purely because she is a full-sister to Free Gift, a useful pointer who has won under rules this season for Robert Alner. This six-year-old showed promise on both starts this term, finishing second in an incident-packed Maiden at Buckfastleigh in March before staying on to finish a creditable third behind Le Turk in a 4000 metre Maiden at Great Trethew three weeks later. There should be further improvement to come this season and it will be a huge surprise if she doesn´t lose her maiden tag by the end of the season.
bullet DON´T BE GREEDY
b,g. Darnay - Adjasalma (USA)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ J.M. Day
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This Ex-Irish gelding was a relatively cheap purchase from Doncaster sales, despite having shown a little ability when falling in an Irish point in 2003. And to be honest, it would be almost impossible to recommend him on his first three starts last term where he pulled far too hard for his own good, giving himself virtually no chance of getting home. However, as conditions dried out, his form improved and after coming fourth at Ashorne in May, and made no mistake in a 4000 metre maiden at Garthorpe two weeks later running on well to beat Rock Vale by 5 lengths. Under those conditions, this son of Darnay definitely has some ability, however he is going to need looking after especially as he is not yet proven over 4800 metres and actually might be a horse that could do really well in shorter distance Hunter Chases if he proves he has the ability to step up to that kind of level.
bullet DUGGLEBY
b,g. Tamure - Glorious Romance
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Ian Mason
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Tamure didn´t do too badly last season and was probably unlucky to have one twice as after easily winning his maiden at Whitwell-On-The-Hill, might well have a won a Restricted at Easingwold three weeks later if his saddle hadn´t slipped approaching the last. This gelding should have progressed during the closed season and should at least win a Restricted before the end of the season.
bullet EL NOMBRE
br,g. El Conquistador - Worth Matravers
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Richard Barber
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→This son of El Conquistador is another risky proposition despite winning at Little Windsor and Cotley Farm last season. This half-brother to useful chaser / hurdler Mouseski appears to have plenty of ability, however unlike his half-brother, appears to have plenty of stamina as well as a worryingly large slice of temperament. He is the sort of horse that could go the wrong way and have an utterly bad season, or with the right placement could run up a stack of victories. The coin is up in the air....as I like the horse, it is evident which side I think the coin will fall on this season.
bullet HONOURABLE SPIDER
b,g. Nomadic Way (USA) - Baroness Spider
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Suzie Ball
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Nomadic Way had a good 2005 and is probably unlucky not to have remained unbeaten all season, having easily landed a Maiden at Aldington in March before reappearing two weeks later in a Restricted at Catsfield where after leading and looking the winner at the last, he has nabbed close home by Jac An Ree eventually going down by a neck. He made no mistake a month later though at Aldington, taking it up at the thirteenth, staying on strongly to beat Mr Ambassador by 25 lengths. That was a first good season in this discipline and it will be a surprise if he doesn´t add further races to his tally in 2006.
bullet LIGHTNINGCONDUCTOR
br,g. Glacial Storm (USA) - New Cello
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Christopher Sporborg
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This well-named son of Glacial Storm has shown bags of greenness in both starts to date and was very novicey in both starts last term at Horseheath and Cottenham. He probably needs to improve massively to win a race in 2006, however he hails from a yard who is certain to squeeze any ability out of him. We´ll monitor his ´progression´ in 2006.
bullet MARINGO (FR)
b,g. Kadalķo (FR) - Tacoma Ii (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Donald McCain
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Kadalķo showed plenty of promise on his first season in this discipline, finishing a creditable second behind Parisian Gale in a 4200 metre Maiden at Whittington before turning out in a similar heat at Eyton-On-Severn two weeks later, staying on strongly after the last to beat Waggy by a neck. We´d like to think there´s plenty more improvement in this six-year-old and with the right placement, looks capable of winning a race in 2006.
bullet MAXOU DES BROSSES (FR)
b,g. Roi De Rome (USA) - Diane Des Brosses (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Keith Cummins
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This is the sort of horse that I believe the əPOINT Notebook is designed for. A horse who at first glance, or a glance at a racecard would almost certainly get crossed out of consideration because of his form figures ´PPF´, who however, when you delve a little deeper you will realise has shown distinct signs of promise / ability particularly in his last two races at Woodford in April and most recently at Bratton Down in June where he was in the lead when falling at the fifth. This French-bred is almost definitely not the finished article and is unlikely to be at the time of writing, however he definitely will improve throughout the season and it would not surprise us if he popped up in a Maiden before the end of the season.
bullet MCSÓLO
b,g. One Voice (USA) - Fair Cone
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Robert Chanin
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ McSólo has a similar profile to Maxou Des Brosses as he failed to finish his first three starts though hinted that he may possess some ability. This view was confirmed on his final start of the season at Flete Park in May when despite odds of 33/1 he stayed on from the back to finish fourth behind the winner Misty Brook (btn. 12 lengths). There is definitely a suggestion of there being more to come and definitely merits consideration in Maiden company in 2006.
bullet MYSTICAL FEELINGS (BEL)
b,m. Feelings (FR) - Mystical Madam
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Alan Balmer
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This daughter of Feelings caught my attention amongst the entries last season, however I couldn´t find any information in the pedigree which would enable me to justify me including her in the əPOINT Notebook last season. However she walks in this time around on the strength of her second start in a 4000 metre maiden at Hexham in May where after being held up, she quickened in good fashion to beat Old Noddy by 4 lengths. That performance looks really promising and would suggest that this six-year-old is well up to winning at the very least a Restricted race, or races in the Mares Only series in 2006.
bullet ŃATIAIN
ch,g. Danzig Connection (USA) - Fen Princess
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Alistair Brown
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Danzing Connection had a good second season between the flags, making rapid improvement in the course of two months as he made all to land a Netherby Open Maiden at the end of February before landing a Restricted race in the same fashion at Alnwick a month later. Clearly riding on the crest of a wave, connections upped him in grade again at Friar´s Haugh and ran him in an Open race on that card. Whilst it wasn´t the greatest Open race to be run in 2005, this seven-year-old deserves plenty of praise because after leading until the eighth and then from the fourteenth, he battled in really strongly to beat Johnnie´s Gone by 3/4 length, in the process winning in a time of 7m 1s, 4 seconds quicker than Just Whiskey won the Confined race on that card, (and he carried 5lbs more) as well as beating the time that Pharmastice managed in landing the Ladies Open (7m 9s) and she carried only 11 stones. It is best to overlook the last run in a Hunter Chase at Hexham as this was possibly asking a little too much of this horse, however it´s a clear sighter as to his ability and he really is the sort of horse that with the right placement should run up a sequence again in 2006.
bullet OUR MAN IN BANGKOK
b,g. Defacto (USA) - Ninety-Five
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Liddy Bethell
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Defacto is probably hard to recommend on the basis of the form shown on his only start to date where he was never really put in the race before running out at the eighth. However, as he is out of a dam who won races, and attracted a little money on his debut, he probably deserves to be monitored for signs of improvement.
bullet PERSIAN BEGGAR
br,g. Persian Mews - Beg Miel
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Di Grissell
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Persian Mews only made one appearance in 2005 in an open maiden at Aldington in May. However it was a hugely encouraging effort as he travelled well until leading two out before giving best close him, eventually finishing second behind Blake´s Road by a 1/2 length in a time 6 seconds quicker than Honourable Spider (also in this list) won the Restricted race on that card. Assuming he will have done well in the closed season, it will be a huge surprise if he doesn´t win a race this season.
bullet SANAMOUR
ch,g. Insan (USA) - Gina´s Love
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Jenny Gordon
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Insan made only a fleeting appearance in 2005, always travelling well before quickening clear three out to win a Restricted race at Godstone at the beginning of February. He was made favourite two weeks later to win a Club Members Conditions race at Charing, however he tipped up at the second fence and has not been seen since. Obviously some concern that she didn´t run afterwards, however assuming all is well, he definitely appears to have the ability to win further races in this discipline.
bullet STUDENT NIGHT
b,g. Jolly Jake (NZ) - Coteri Run
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Ollie Jackson
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ We are probably extremely stupid to include this ´mad horse´ in our feature as we know that despite being favourite in both of his starts to date at Trebudannon and Wadebridge, he has been almost completely uncontrollable and has not yet got past half-way. However if you create a list looking at horses who have the ability to win races, in some cases having shown no potential at all, how can you ignore a horse who despite being buried at the back, tears off at a rate of knots to get in front by the eighth fence. This horse has definitely got an engine, however he seems to have issues once getting in front, because it was only until he led that he decided he´d had enough and crashed through the wing of the approaching obstacle. It´ll be interesting to see if he does appear in 2006 particularly for Ollie Jackson or whether another board is brave enough to take him on. If somebody is prepared to invest the time of getting the horse to trust the rider he could well have the ability to do really well in this discipline...that is our justification for putting him in and we fully understand it´s quite possible he becomes a complete lunatic this season - you have been warned.
bullet THATMAKESTWOOFUS
ch,g. Rock Hopper - Running River
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Miss A. Davies
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Rock Hopper only made one appearance last season in an Open Maiden at Brampton Bryan in April. However it was a likeable effort as he jumped well, moving from the rear to fourth by half-way before leading four from home, drawing steadily clear from two out to beat The Well Lad by 20 lengths. That horse subsequently franked the form when making all to land an Open Maiden at Kingston Blount in May. Hopefully there will be more to come from this six-year-old during the coming campaign.

ӘPOINT NOTEBOOK ´06 Ω  [ PART #01. - ӘPOINT NOTEBOOK 2005 ]
Thursday, January 05, 2006.
Here is part one of what hopefully each week will build into what we hope is a useful list of horses we´re hoping will be amongst the winners in 2006. In this section we will be reintroducing the horse from the 2005 әPOINT notebook, who we feel deserve to keep their place in this feature. you will find below our transcript from last season, plus a record of their performance and/or why we feel they deserve their place.

bullet BALÅU
br,g.. Primitive Rising (USA) - Say Daphne
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Alison Hickman
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Balåu made a promising start to his career between the flags, easily landing an Open Maiden at Detling in March before an unfortunate experience at Penshurst when taking a heavy fall two out for which he laid down for ten minutes before getting back to his feet. Connections understandably gave him a chance to get over this experience and he repaid their kindness with a promising fourth behind Sutton Courtney in quite a decent Restricted race at Kingston Blount in May. He is definitely a horse with some potential, however he will need to brush up his jumping to maximise it.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Balåu won two of his four starts and seems to be still improving. He took a heavy fall last-time-out at Aldington and will need to prove that he has suffered no ill effects
bullet BILLY WHITELIES
gr,g.. Ala Hounak - Mirella Parsons
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Scott Joynes
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I had the good fortune of seeing this almost-white son of Ala Hounak once last season where he made a few too many mistakes when weakening close home when odds on at Maisemore Park at the end of March. He has previously fallen at the last when well-clear at Didmarton and ended his season when again filling the runners-up post back at Maisemore Park at the beginning of May. He should have lost his maiden tag by now and you´d like to think that it is the least he is able to achieve in 2005.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Missed last term, and clearly remains fragile... I would still be keen on his him if he turned out in a maiden at some stage in 2006.
bullet BLUE MAGNUM (FR)
b,g. Pistolet Bleu - Dalticia (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Stewart Pike
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Blue Magnum caught my eye amongst this week´s meetings. Blue Magnum is a son of Pistolet Bleu, out of the mare Dalticia, which makes him a half-brother to winning hurdler Ś´Assagir, who won a couple of races with Nicky Henderson a few seasons ago. This un-raced five-year-old is sure to have been well schooled and will hopefully show us some promise before the end of the season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Did not race last term, however appears to still be in training and has appeared amongst the entries for this weekend´s meetings
bullet BORDER FUSION
b,g. Weld - Monteviot
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Gary Hamner
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Border Fusion has only had one run between the flags, however it was a highly-promising one at Eaton Hall in March where he made up a lot of ground from half-way to lead on the bit at the last, eventually beating Heathyard´s Element by 2 ½ lengths. He hasn´t appeared since, however is likely to add to that tally (granted normal improvement) in 2005.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Unbeaten in three starts last term at Eyton-on-Severn, Sandon and Garthorpe. Has shown some temperament, however possesses bags of ability and should really be good enough to win races in 2006.
bullet BRER BEAR
b,g. Perpendicular - Nestfield
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Emma Insley
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Brer Bear might prove to be a poor choice this term, particularly when you consider that in the first of his three attempts last season, he failed to complete and never at any stage gave any indication that a win was likely in 2004. However, on his final start at Lockinge, a totally different version of this son of Perpendicular came to light and after being held up made strong headway to lead five out, eventually slamming Nocash by 15 lengths with the third and fourth placed horses well behind. If this version of Brer Bear appears anywhere this season, it is hard to imagine him not at least winning in Restricted company.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Brer Bear had a good season last term, winning two of his five races at Siddington and Lockinge. This six-year-old improved throughout last season and should be capable of winning races at some stage through 2006.
bullet BRIAR (CZE)
b,g. House Rules (USA) - Bright Angel (AUT)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Mrs M. Norton
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Briar never really built on the promise shown as a juvenile when coming from the Czech Republic, only winning a juvenile hurdle at Folkestone in December ´02. He hasn´t been seen since running a lot better than a 27lengths defeat by Glacial Evening might initially suggest, and I´ve always felt that we never saw the best of him and he might do well in this sphere especially if he is given the opportunity to race on soft/heavy ground, which he appeared to revel on when trained by Mark Pitman
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Briar failed to trouble the judge in both of his two starts last term, however did suggest that he has retained some of his ability. Connections should be more realistic with him and try their luck between the flags before trying their hand again in hunter chase company.
bullet CANNON BRIDGE
ch, g. Definate Article - Hit For Six
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Cath Williams
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Canon Bridge made the transition from a promising Novice Hurdler to a potentially useful pointer, winning each of his three starts, beginning with a win in Maiden company at Erw Lon in February followed by victories at Llanfrynach in March and Bonvilston a month later. He didn´t race afterwards, however he appeared to have knocked himself last time out which may explain his absence and hopefully he returns fighting fit in 2005.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Last season´s winning-most point winning each of his nine starts and now has stretched his winning run to twelve. He will be very difficult be beat in points though I believe that he is being considered for the Cheltenham Foxhunters
bullet CAPT. JACK
b,g. Houmayoun (FR) - Pride Of The West
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ M. J. Parr
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Capt. Jack is our "ex-Irish addition" this week. This six-year-old, has joined present connections after showing promise each of his three runs to date - his best effort being when he came home second behind Was I Right in a 5 & 6-y-o Horses & Geldings Maiden at Dromohane in April ´04. The winner has run well in Hunter Chases this season, therefore this son of Houmayoun must has strong claims in Maiden company this winter.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Did not race last term, however appears to still be in training and has appeared amongst the entries for this weekend´s meetings
bullet DĀPPLES
gr,m. Accordion - Aurore De Crystal (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ : B A Kilpatrick
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Dāpples is included in this feature purely by accident rather than design. I was searching for information on Merrimac, who has been included later on in this feature and discovered that Dapples was also going to be aimed at this discipline this season. This five-year-old daughter of Accordion has the most interesting of pedigrees, being a daughter of Accordion, out of the mare Aurore De Crystal, (a daughter of Crystal Palace). Aurore De Crystal is the most interesting part of her pedigree, as this mare has "mass-produced" winners in France including Aurocyos, [a son of Sicýos who won and was placed in Grade races in France, most notably the Prix Jean Bart Hurdle]; Apǻmee, [who won the Prix Finot Hurdle (fillies) [Listed Race] at Auteuiŀ], Aurorale, Jasmonde, and Kadoulka, as well as Ķaradal, Fleche de Crystal, Fabulous Princess and Sissi Impératrice, who were all placed either on the flat or over obstacles. It´s hard to ask for more without having even stepped on the racecourse, and it will be a disappointment if this five-year-old isn´t good enough to win a race, if not this season, then sometime in the future.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Dāpples showed plenty of promise when winning he second start at Wadebridge in February, however didn´t race afterwards and may have had a problem.. she is definitely good enough to win a race in 2006.
bullet DARNIĻ
br,g. Grand Plaisir - Art Lover
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ David Rogers
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Darniļ is the first of a couple of ex-Irish recruits that we´ve included in this week´s list. Darniļ is a seven-year-old by Grand Plaisir, out of the mare Art Lover, [a daughter of Over The River (FR)]. Darniļ had four runs in Ireland last season. He was an encouraging fourth behind Icy Belle in an Adjacent Maiden at Skibbereen on 29/02/04, before making no mistake next-time-out a month later to land a Adjacent Hunt Race at Bandon, beating Canon Keane by 2lengths. He then made two quick appearance in April ´04 in "Winner Of One" races at Dromohane and Inch, and whilst not adding to his tally, did run well in the first of these at Dromohane staying on to finish second, 10lengths behind the winner Native Coral. Connection at least know that Darniļ has a glimmer of ability and if he improves this term after those quick races , could well be capable of landing a another race in the UK this season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Darniļ had a great season winning three times and should really continue his upward progression in 2006.
bullet DOUBLE ANGE (FR)
b,g. Double Bed (FR) - La Mésange (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Mrs Katie Baimbridge
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Double Ange is an interesting recruit to this discipline. This son of Double Bed, is out the mare La Mésange (FR) , [a daughter of Olmeto], who has produced several winning chasers, the most noteworthy of those being Mister Ange, a multi-times winner in France. Double Ange has shown a fair level of form in France when trained by Jean-Paul Gallorini and won over both codes, most recently when winning the Prix de la Vendee (claiming şteeple´CH.) at Cagnes-Sur-Mer in January ´03 by a distance. He hasn´t raced since coming fourth behind Patterson in a claiming hurdle at Engĥien-Soisy in January ´04, however he doesn´t have too many miles on the clock and could do well in this discipline if he is realistically placed.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Double Ange won a Ladies race at Cold Harbour on his penultimate start, however ran his best race when coming home second in a Hunter Chase at Stratford-Upon-Avon in May. There may be still a little more improvement to come, however placement of this eight-year-old will be critical.
bullet EDIӘ MCCREDIE
b,m. Flemensfirth (USA) - Forest Gale
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Helen Needham
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Ediә McCredie "walked" into the əPOINT notebook this week. This five-year-old couldn´t be better bred being a daughter of Flemensfirth, out of the mare Forest Gale, which makes Ediә McCredie a half-sister to Wishing William, Forest Fountain, Philtre, and Sir Galeforce, who all won point-to-points as well as Hunter Chases, as well as Snowtre, who has won a couple of races between the flags. She has plenty going for here and I´ll be looking for some promise before the end of the season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Ediә McCredie only ran twice, showing a little promise on her début at Upton-on-Severn. There appears to be plenty of potential here and may emulate her illustrious relatives
bullet EGGSHELLS
b,g. Polish Precedent (USA) - Plume Magique
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ David M Easterby
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Eggshells is the first of this weeks debutantes that we´ll be adding to this feature. This five-year-old son of Polish Precedent, is out of the mare Plume Magique [a daughter of Kenmare (FR)], which makes Eggshell a half-brother to Kuwait Flavour and Magic Feathers, who were both placed on the flat. Egg Shells does appear to have a flat pedigree, so it´ll be interesting to see how he fares in this discipline.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Eggshells has been an early faller in both of his career starts to date, and needs to improve in that department to ever be capable of winning a race.
bullet ĒUROGAEDEL
b,g. Eurobus - Lisbawn
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Cherie Cunningham
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Ēurogaedel is one of several promising youngsters added to the list from last season´s new recruits. This son of Eurobus only raced once last term in an Open Maiden at Ampton in March. After attracting some support in the market, this five-year-old showed a lot of tenacity to stay on gamely to beat Arctic Snip by 15 lengths. This wasn´t the greatest of races, however he appears to possess an abundance of stamina which should see him in good stead this time around.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→Ēurogaedel had a good first season winning two of his three starts, most recently when beating Baron Halebop at Horseheath in March. Futher improvement is likely and we´d be very hopeful that he can win more races this winter.
bullet FANE COUNSEL
b,g. Leading Counsel (USA) - Fane Heights
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Andy Hobbs
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This six-year-old ex-Irish pointer gained a huge reputation prior to his first races in the UK, (which is partly why we put him in the әPOINT Notebook last year). On his first two runs at Horseheath, he looked a quality recruit when winning a Restricted and Intermediate race. However, the wheels appeared to come off afterwards and I had the misfortune to see him cock his jaw and run out at Brampton Bryan at the end of March and he subsequently disappointed again when coming home only third behind Minella Silver in a Mens Open at Chaddesley Corbett (btn. 9 ½ lengths). It´s quite possible that might be as good as he is, however he left such a lasting impression that we feel he does deserve the benefit of the doubt now.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Fane Counsel only ran one race last term, finishing a good second behind Kerstino Two in a Mens Open at Barbury Castle almost a year ago. Obviously met with some form of setback afterwards, however is too good to omit if all is well with him this season.
bullet FIGHTING CHANCE
b,g. Germany (USA) - Una Juna
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Sally Alner
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I´m very surprised to see a horse with the profile/pedigree of Fighting Chance being entered up in this weeks meeting rather than in a Maiden Hurdles under rules, however their loss in pointing´s gain . Fighting Chance is impeccably-bred being a son of the sire Germany, out of a mare Una Juna, [a daughter Good Thyne (USA)], which makes Fighting Chance a half-brother to War of Attrition, a useful novice hurdler last term, who was second behind Brave Inca in the Letheby & Christopher Supreme Novices´ Hurdle at last season´s Cheltenham Festival. Fighting Chance has had one career run to date and it was an eye-catching debut against more experienced rivals at Newbury in March ´04, where he was held up before making steady headway in the last mile to finish third behind River Trapper [btn. 5¾lengths]. Clearly Fighting Chance will be going back under rules at some stage, however I hope it´ll be with a couple of success between the flags under his name.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Fighting Chance had a good first season winning two of his three starts at Larkhill and Woodford. This six-year-old is promising and should continue to improve in 2006.
bullet FUTURE SOVEREIGN
br,g. Sovereign Water (FR) - Cautious Leader
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Sheila Crow
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Future Sovereign is an attractively-bred debutant who is added to the əPOINT notebook this week. He is a son of Sovereign Water, out of the mare Cautious Leader (a daughter of Supreme Leader), which makes him a half-brother to several winners, including Celtic Park, Must Bite and Carrick Lanes, who all won races over obstacles under rules, as well as High Fields, who has won races between the flags. There is plenty of potential here and it´ll be interesting to see how he performs during the remainder of the campaign.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Future Sovereign should really be dropped as although he did win a maiden of his third start, it was only done in a very slow time. His pedigree however does suggest that he should improve as he matures and therefore we have given him the benefit of the doubt.
bullet GARDEN SHED SPIDER
b,g. Lord Americo - Muffet´s Spider
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Chris Pimlott
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ The cleverly named Garden Shed Spider, [not quite as good as John Manners naming AitcҺjayem with his initials, but a good name nonetheless], is another newcomer added to this əPOINT notebook this week. This five-year-old is a son of Lord Americo, out of the mare Muffet´s Spider, (a daughter of Rymer), which means that Garden Shed Spider is a half-brother to amongst others: Mighty Strong, [who matured with age to become a bit of a Newbury specialist], as well as Spider Music, [who has been placed over obstacles recently for Ferdy Murphy]. He probably needs time, however hopefully he shows some promise before the end of the season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Garden Shed Spider was in the process of running a good race on his debut at Charm Park in March ´05, when being brought down at the twelfth fence. As long as he hasn´t suffered any serious ill-effects must have decent claims in maiden company this season.
bullet GET OFF MY CLOUD
b,g. Grand Plaisir - White Beau
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Susanna Hall
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Get Off My Cloud caught my attention amongst this weekend´s meetings. This six-year-old has joined present connection, after having raced twice in Ireland last term. He made an inauspicious start to his career in a five-year-old Geldings Maiden at Liscarroll in March in March ´04, when running on early on. He was given a chance to atone for this lapse of concentration six days later in a five-year-old Maiden at Áthlacca. This time he made no mistake, staying on from a long way back to beat Surprise Adventure by ½length. With there being so little mileage on the clock, this son of Grand Plaisir should still be open to further improvement. Quite what his form amounts to isn´t clear, however he offers hope for the future, and those types of credentials tend to find this features winners... Lets hope he adds to this tally this season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Get Off My Cloud only ran twice, however showed plenty of potential when easily beating Naughty Dandy at Penshurst in April. There appears to be plenty of improvement to come and looks set for another good season
bullet GONNA DO
ch,g. Gunner B - Flimsy Fortune
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ M. H. Weston
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I am a fervent believer in the value of monitory breeding dynasties a source of future winners ... i.e. the Grey Dove bloodline has been responsible for numerous winners like champion hurdler Flakey Dove, as well as a succession of horse who carried the Dove "surname" with distinction. Although at first glance Gonna Do´s pedigree is interesting, without being awe-inspiring, if like you look deeper into his family tree, you quickly discover that his dam Flimsy Fortune is a daughter of Flimsy Jacksy, who has produced numerous winners, most notably Flimsy Truth, who won several races between the flags before going under rules and landing the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, as well as running creditably in several long-distance steeplechases. There is definite potential here and whilst that may not be fulfilled in the short-term, Gonna Do may well become a familiar name in this sphere over the coming seasons
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Gonna Do´s fourth behind Art Virginia, [now in training with Nicky Henderson], is the only promise we´ve seen thus far, however this family improve with age/experience so no need to panic yet.
bullet GREGORY PECKORY
b,g. Teamster - Vill Alba
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Jelly O´Brien
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ For me, part of the attraction of this feature is the ability to indicate horses who may only have hinted that they may possess ability, who occasionally go on to fulfil that potential. I´ll be hoping that this son of Teamster comes into this category. He had shown some promise under rules before lining up in an Open Maiden at Ashorne in May. Although he ran well, this six-year-old was always doing a little bit too much during the first two thirds of the race and this eventually told on him as he began to weaken from the 14th fence, eventually coming down a few fences later. Hopefully he is a little wiser as a result after that unfortunate experience and if he learns to conserve his energy, or at the very least economise his effort there is a chance that he´ll get into the winner´s enclosure at some stage this term - 2 ½ mile Maidens seem to be the most likely race for him at present.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Gregory Peckory ran six times last season winning two races, as well as finishing second on his only other completed starts, [twice]. Progressing nicely and should have another good season.
bullet HEEZ A DREAMER
b,g. Naheez (USA) - Tuitestown
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Caroline Keevil
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Heez A Dreamer is a very interesting recruit as he is a five-year-old son of the American-bred sire Naheez , out of the mare Tuitestown, [a daughter of Orchestra], which makes Heez A Dreamer a half-brother to Classic Glory, Stay Still, Tuite´s Castle and Winter Surprise, who were all placed under rules, as well as Island Pride, a son of Shardari, who has won his last two races in Ireland, most recently a handicap chase at Punchestown two weeks ago. He definitely comes under the heading "interesting" and he is definitely one to watch out for during the remainder of the campaign.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Heez A Dreamer´s sole run resulted in victory in a maiden at Tweseldown in February, when narrowly beating Change The Plan. Hasn´t run since, but I did note that he amongst this week´s entries.
bullet HEISAMODEL
b,g. Balla Cove - Liffeyside Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ John Boulter
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Heisamodel retains his position in this feature. This seven-year-old son of Balla Cove ran four times last term, having been bought after showing promise in Ireland, steadily progressing after each effort, failing to complete on his first two starts at Bishop´s Court and Littlewindsor before coming home second behind Denvale in an Intermediate race at Garthorpe in April, before finally getting his head in front on his final start in a similar race at Trebudannon, where he stayed on to beat State Medlar by 6lengths. Clearly he is going the right way and hopefully will add to this tally during the 2005 campaign.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→Heisamodel could become frustrating this season. He did win three of his seven starts and was second on the only other occasion he completed. We did however see some temperament from him, and did pull himself up/refuse twice when placed under maximum pressure in hunter chase company. He has the ability to win points if he can´t be placed under pressure, however his temperament may always be an issue against the strongest company.
bullet JUMBUL SALE
bl,g. Sula Bula - Confused Express
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Caroline Bailey
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Jumbul Sale is another newcomer due to make his debut in points shortly. This six-year-old is a son of Sula Bula, out of the mare Confused Express (a daughter of the sire Confused), which means that Jumbul Sale is distantly related to several winners including Tharus O´Riley, who won hunter chases in the mid-eighties. I have no got any high expectations for him, however he is appeals on pedigree and I´ll be interested to see how he gets on this winter.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Jumbul Sale did manage one win from five starts last term, as well as finishing second on his last two starts. His dam Confused Express managed twenty-two successes in her illustrious career... only twenty-one to go then!!!...
bullet KЎALAMI (FR)
gr,g. Royal Charter (FR) - Reine Margot III (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ R Kelvin-Hughes
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Kўalami retains his place in this feature having finished in the frame on both completed starts last term at Larkhill and Kilworthy. He failed to complete on both his other starts, ironically enough, coming down at the second last at both Bishop´s Court and in Hunter Chase company at Uttoxeter where he gave the impression that he was coming to the end of his tether which may have ultimately resulted in him coming down. He clearly does have ability though and there must surely be opportunities for him to lose his Maiden tag in 2005.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Kўalami continued his good form between the flags - winning twice, however hasn´t yet made the transition to Hunter chases, although he did run well on his most recent attempts at Newbury and Cheltenham. He will need to improve again to win races this term if, as I suspect, he concentrates mainly on hunter chases this season.
bullet LIFE COVER
b,m. Alflora - Front Cover
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Stewart Pike
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I eulogised earlier about the merits of Gonna Do and the significance of his family tree. Well, if this theory is true, then arguably Life Cover is entitled to even greater respect as this daughter of Alflora is out of the mare Front Cover who won several races between the flags as well as a couple of Hunter Chases. That itself would arguably be enough for her inclusion in this list, however further investigation confirmed my thoughts that there was a significant dynasty here. Sure enough, Front Cover is a daughter of the mare Roman Lilly. To those with long memories, this immediately will help trigger memories of some of her progeny, the likes of Proud Sun, Synderborough Lad, Winter´s Lane and Sweatshirt, who like Front Cover all won races between the flags before winning races under rules. Winning bloodlines don´t get much better than this and if Front Cover has inherited some of her Mother´s genes, you have to be hopeful that her progeny could well follow in the family footsteps. I´ll certainly be hopeful that is the case.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Life Cover was impressive with winning her only start at Great Trethew in February and it won´t surprise us if she doesn´t show further improvement this season
bullet LONDON BY NIGHT (USA)
b,g. Mt. Livermore (USA) - Sheenasgold (USA)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Dick Baimbridge
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ London by Night is certainly not bred to be plying his trade in point-to-points, as this a son of the American sire Mt. Livermore, out of the mare Sheenasgold (a daughter of Fast Gold, who was a winner in the US), which makes him a half-brother to two winners, most notably The Groom Is Red who amongst his successes in the USA won the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes. This five-year-old has run six times for Terry Mills without every threatening to trouble the judge, [arguably his best effort was his second start when he came home last behind Tiber at Goodwood in September ´02, [btn. 16lengths], however he is older and stronger and could be worth monitoring for signs of him "blooming"...
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ London by Night looked promising when winning a maiden on his debut at Upton-on-Severn in March, however didn´t jump well on his final start... hopefully the trainer can iron out these problems in 2006
bullet LORD OF THE BOG
br,g. Mister Lord (USA) - Shakie Lady
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ R Kelvin-Hughes
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Lord of the Bog is another newcomer added to the ӘÞOINT notebook. This six-year-old is a son of Mister Lord, out of the mare Shakie Lady (a daughter of Tug of War), which makes Lord of the Bog a half-brother to Pharare, [who won several races between the flags as well as some Hunter chases], as well as Aura About Him and Tower Of Lloyd who both won races under rules. He looks good on paper and it´ll be interesting to see how he gets on over the coming weeks
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Lord of the Bog only ran twice last term, however did manage to win a maiden on his second start at Ston Easton in March when beating Money Crazy despite showing signs of greenness. This seven-year-old should have strengthened up during the summer and could be up to Restricted Class/better in 2006.
bullet MAGNỊOLIA (FR)
b,g. Our Account (USA) - Fatima III (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ S. P. Tindall
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Magnịolia is an another newcomer to be added to this feature. He is a five-year-old son of the American-bred sire Our Account out of the mare Fatima III, [a daughter of Bayolidaan (FR). after a lot of investigation, I established that this meant that Magnịolia is a half-brother to, Kashima, [a daughter of Kadalķo], who won three Cross-Country şteeple´CHs.. in France, most recently at Ploërmel in august ´04. If I´m honest I´m not sure what we have here, however I suspect Magnịolia has potential and he intrigues me enough to want to include this horse in this feature.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→Magnịolia did alright on his first season winning a maiden at Brafield-On-The-Green before making all to win a Restricted Race at Detling in April. This six-year-old showed a lot of greenness last term and therefore should be capable of further improvement in 2006.
bullet MI FA SOL AULMES (FR)
ch,m. Garde Royalé (FR) - Bull Finch Aulmes (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Emma Reed
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ My knowledge of French pedigree means that Mi Fa Sol Aulmes is added to the ӘÞOINT Notebook. This five-year-old is a daughter of Garde Royalé out of the mare Bull Finch Aulmes (who is a daughter of Rose Laurel) which means that Mi Fa Sol Aulmes is a full-sister to Edition Française who´s name may not immediately spring to your attention, however this seven-year-old had shown some useful form in Irish point-to-points before breaking down on his only start under rules. There is probably more potential here than immediately meets the eye and as a result, this mare may merit closer attention in maidens, particularly mares-only races once she´s had some experience.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Mi Fa Sol Aulmes fell on her only points starts, however ran really well in a bumper at Wetherby in November when coming home fifth behind She´s The Lady, [btn. 12 lengths]... Probably has the ability to win a maiden this season, [at the very least], if connections decide to go down this route.
bullet MIRAMAR (FR)
ch,g. Řagmar (FR) - Detroit III (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Gordon Chambers
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Miramar is a fascinatingly-bred newcomer, [contrary to the information given on the Racing Post website]. This five-year-old is a son of Řagmar, out of the mare Detroit Iii, [a daughter of Video Rock]. Although his dam Detroit Iii was un-raced, she has already produced a couple of useful performers in France, most notably Kamillo, a useful chaser trained by Francois Cottin, who last season came second to the great Ķotkijet in the Gras Savoye Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris (Grade 1) at Auteuiŀ in May ´04. Clearly his pedigree appeals and it´ll be interesting to see how he progresses this season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Miramar didn´t do too badly last season, as although he didn´t manage a victory did finish in the frame on the last of his three starts when finishing a fair second behind Gemster at Bratton Down in June. He appears to be improving nicely and looks good to hopefully win in Maiden company before the end of this term.
bullet MOODS
b,g. Lord Americo - Eòin´s Orchestra
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ James Buckle
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I will not be at all surprised if this five-year-old doesn´t one day race under rules. Trevor Hemmings must be pleased to own this son of Lord Americo, who is out of the mare Eòin´s Orchestra, (who is a daughter of Orchestra), which means that that Moods is a half-brother to Sigma Techs, who won two races. Obviously didn´t quite fulfill Noel Meade´s expectations of him. He looks good on paper and I´ll be fascinated to see how he performs during the remainder of this campaign, but like most of these and definitely worth keeping an eye on over the next 18months or so.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ {LATER}
bullet NGONĜ HILLS (FR)
b,g. Passing Sale (FR) - Caryatide (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Ngonĝ Hills is another Irish pointer we´ve included in this feature. This four-year-old is nicely bred being a son of Passing Sale, out of the mare Caryatide, (a daughter of Maiymad), which makes Ngonĝ Hills a half-brother to amongst others Jumpty Dumpty, who was with Guillaume Macaire before winning two races over obstacles during the last twenty-four months. Ngonĝ Hills has had one run to date, in a four-year-old Maiden at Summerhill on 24.04.05, where he travelled well and was still in contention when coming down at the third last. Hopefully he has suffered no ill-effects from that experience and can build on that promise during the remainder of the campaign.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ {LATER}
bullet PRESENTAL
b,g. Presenting - Oriental Blaze
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Aiden Murphy
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Presental is another newcomer added to the ӘÞOINT notebook. This five-year-old son of popular sire Presenting, is out of the mare Oriental Blaze, [a daughter of Seamanship], which makes Presental a half-brother to amongst others Eastern River, who won several races under rules in the early nineties. He has a nice pedigree and merits some scrutiny over the remainder of the season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Greenness may have cost this six-year-old victory on his final starts at Bitterly in April, however he only had two runs last term, and should have matured/strengthened up during the summer.
bullet QUESTIONIT
b,m. Sovereign Water (FR) - Query Line
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Miss L Gardner
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Questionit, by rights, probably should have already been in this feature, as she fits the profile of a lot of the promising horses of 2004, that have already been included, and her reappearance in the Restricted race at Larkhill on 09/01/05, only goes to reinforce this impression. This daughter of Sovereign Water was held up, before making steady progress from the twelfth eventually coming home a creditable second behind easy winner West Paces, [btn. 7lengths]. Its the sort of runs which you´d hope this six-year-old will build upon, and granted further improvement, must have a decent chance of further success in 2005.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Only ran twice last term, however ran creditably in Restricted company, most recently when coming home fourth behind Mister Swallow at Tiverton in February ´05, [btn. 16lengths]. Appears to be still progressing and could land a similar race before the end of this campaign.
bullet ROCKVALE
ch,g. Presenting - Vanhalensdarling
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Caroline Bailey
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Rockvale is the final debutante that we will be adding to the əPOINT notebook this week. This six-year-old is attractively -bred being a son of Presenting, out of the mare Vanhalensdarling, [a daughter of Green Shoon, who won three point-to-points], which makes Rockvale a half-brother to amongst others Mountain Thyne, [who won three point-to-points, as well as a Hunter Chase at Hexham in April ´02], Halen´s Match, [who won two point-to-points] and Vanhoutonscoco [who ran twice in N.H. Flat Races and over hurdles], and comes from the same family as Wild Flyer: [3 wins over hurdles and placed 4 times; also 3 wins in point-to-points], Gladtogetit: [winner of a N.H. Flat Race; as well as 3 wins over fences], and Little Brown Bear, [2 wins and £10,612 over fences]. There is plenty of potential here, and hopefully we will see some promise before the end of the campaign.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Rockvale showed plenty of promise in three starts last term, finishing second in his last two starts in maiden company - most recently when coming home second behind Don´t Be Greedy at Garthorpe in May ´05... Should be good enough to win a maiden before the end of the season.
bullet RUNNING EARTH
gr,g. Roselier (FR) - Drumdeels Star
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Richard Barber
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ This son of Roselier is yet to complete in point-to-points to date. However, he has hinted that there may be more to come, particularly on his most recent start at Stafford Cross where he was competitive for 2 ½ miles before being pulled up 2 from home. He was backed into favouritism that day, and no doubt the same will be the case at some stage this season. This time, however, he may be mature enough to handle the pressure.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Did not race last term, however appears to still be in training and would still be of interest if he does appear this season.
bullet SAINT RÊVERIEN (FR)
b,g. Silver Rainbow - La Briganderie (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ C J Hitchings
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ My interest in French racing attracted me to Saint Rêverien, a six-year-old son of Silver Rainbow, who had shown plenty of promise over fences in France, including coming home second to Ice Mood, in a steeplechase at Auteuiŀ in April ´03; [Ice Mood went on to land the 2003 running of the Gras Savoye Cinema-Prix Ferdinand Dufaůre (Grade 1 şteeple´CH.)]. He disappointed in three attempts for Ian Williams, however as he still is a maiden, does have plenty going for him in this discipline... we´ll have to see how he gets on.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Saint Rêverien had a really good season and was a model of consistency finishing in the frame on each of his eight starts - winning four times, most recently when landing a Mens Open at Maisemore Park in May. Should be able of further improvement and should continue to win in this grade, though I wouldn´t be at all surprised if he wasn´t upped to Hunter chases before the end of this campaign.
bullet SHERIFFSGUN
b,g. Needle Gun - Crackingham
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Caroline Robinson
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Sheriffsgun is another debutant that caught the eye amongst this week´s entries, as this five-year-old is a son of Needle Gun, out of the mare Crackingham, (a daughter of Trimmingham), which makes Sheriffsgun a half-brother of Romanóskì, who won under rules, as well as Brockton Glen, Winward, Cracked Ice and Pull Your Socks Up, who were all placed under rules. Needle Gun a decent performer on the flat could develop into is an interesting national hunt sire for the future so I´ll be interested to see how he performs during the remainder of the campaign.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Sheriffsgun only ran once last term and ran greenly before being pulled up with half a mile to go... that experience will not be lost of him and we´d be hopeful that he can show improvement during the coming campaign.
bullet SHUIL AN BURREN
b,g. Luso - Shuil Stoirmeach
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Paul Barber
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Shuil An Burren was bought with the future in mind. This four-year-old son of Luso is out of the mare Shuil Stoirmeach, [a daughter of Strong Gale], which means that Shuil An Burren is related to several winner including Foursure who three races between the flags, Shuil Osheen who won five time and is the dam of 6 winners inc. Shuil Donn, who won 11 times, Shuil Orient: 2 wins over hurdles at 5 years placed 4 times; Shuil Ogue VI, [2 wins in N.H. Flat Races as well as once over hurdles Baronet; who won 7 races including the Scottish Grand National, and Shuil Liss: [winner of a N.H. Flat Race; also 4 wins over hurdles and 3 wins over fences; who is the dam of Liss A Paoráigh a decent hurdler a few season ago. Success flows through the veins of this family bloodline and I am not surprised bought him with a view to one day running under runs... I look forward to noting his progress over the coming seasons
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ {LATER}
bullet SOMEDO SOMEDON´T
b,g. Sovereign Water (FR) - My Purple Prose
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Richard Barber
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ After giving it some thought I´ve decided to include Somedo Somedon´t in the əPOINT notebook, having included I´m Lovin It , who may have beaten him when they met on their respective debuts in a division of the Open Maiden on Littlewindsor´s card on 24/04/05. This son of Sovereign Water had travelled well himself, and after appear to bump I´m Lovin It stayed on to beat Apatura Rose by 5lengths. There was some market support for him that day and as he in a yard sure to maximise his potential, there appears to be plenty of reasons to keeping a watching brief on him.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Somedo Somedon´t showed promise in both starts last season, following up the win mentioned above by running creditably when possibly been given too much to do when coming home third behind Apatura Joe in a Restricted Race at Stafford Cross in May. There should be further improvement to come and should add further successes to him tally in 2006.
bullet SPICE RACK
b,g. Rakaposhi King - Cinnamon Run
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Mrs A Villar
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Spice Rack caught my eye amongst the entries. This six-year-old is nicely bred, being a son of Rakaposhi King, out of the mare Cinnamon Run, [a daughter of Deep Run], which means that Spice Rack is a half-brother to Cinnamon Line, Sister Cinnamon, Cassia and Cinnamon Club, who amongst their victories all won races under rules. He appears to have plenty going for him and I´ll be interested to see how he performs during the remainder of the season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Did not race last term, however appears to still be in training and has appeared amongst the entries for this weekend´s meetings
bullet SUZIE CREAM CHEESE
gr,m. Royal Charter (FR) - Scala Iv (FR)
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Jelly O´Brien
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ The interestingly named Suzie Cream Cheese makes plenty of appeal on pedigree... even if the name may not be to everyone´s taste. This daughter of Royal Charter, is out of the mare Scala, [a daughter of Quart De Vin (FR)], which makes this six-year-old a half-sister to Kindle Ball, a winner over hurdles for Venetia Williams, and Gain Èr Ball who was placed over obstacles in France. She does make some appeal and could be one to note once she´s had a couple of runs under her belt.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→Suzie Cream Cheese didn´t do too badly last season, winning the second start of her career, when beating Eastern Apple in Mollington in February. She subsequently ran creditably behind Sherwood Rose at Chaddesley Corbett on her final start and looks very promising for this campaign - possibly in mares´ only races
bullet THEATRE CALL
b,g. Old Vic - Jennycomequick
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ G. C. Maundrell
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Theatre Call is another to have caught my eye amongst the entries for the meeting at Cottenham on 03/01/05, even though this six-year-old has yet to show anything in six attempts when in Jim Old´s care last season. He is however a half-brother, [by Old Vic], to Grade 2 winning hurdler Leinster, so all may not be lost ... Hopefully he´ll show some promise in Maiden company this season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Theatre Call lost his maiden tag on his third start when easily landing an open maiden at Howick in February, before running creditably in Restricted company on his only subsequent start ..I´d like to think that further improvement was possible in 2006.
bullet THE BIG BREAKFAST
b,g. Rashar (USA) - A-Okay
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Mrs Maxine Stirk
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I noted that The Big Breakfast figures amongst the entries for the Restricted race at the West Percy Hunt Meeting at Alnwick this weekend. Not being familiar with this him, my quest for knowledge began!!. I was surprised to learn that The Big Breakfast was an un-raced five-year-old son of Rashar, out of the mare A-Okay, (who is a daughter of Roselier), which as a result intrigued me as to why he was this entry, rather than a spin in a maiden. This isn´t a recommendation for you to go mad on Sunday, however its quite probable that he is pleasing connections, therefore he is possibly one to note for signs of promise over the coming season.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Easily landed a maiden at Whittington in March ´05 and looked potentially useful. Apparently this six-year-old has been subsequently sold, though has yet to appear under rules,.. which may mean another season in points in 2006.
bullet TIN TRADER
b,g. Mister Lord (USA) - Ross Rag
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Sally Alner
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Tin Trader is another one of the "complete unknown quantities" that I like to include in my horses-to-follow listings. This five-year-old son of Mister Lord (USA), is out of the mare Ross Rag; (a daughter of Ragapan), which makes Tin Trader, a full-brother to Mister Ross and Oh My Lord, both of who have won races under rules, as well as being a half-brother to Rossmay, who was placed under rules. Obviously this is not a guarantee that Tin Trader can win races, however its a useful premise to begin from and it´ll be interesting to monitor how he performs in his first season racing
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Owner Peter Bonner had a decent string of pointers last term and along with the good form shown by Fighting Chance, he also has Tin Trader to look forward to who lost his maiden tag on his last, [third] starts at Larkhill in April. I would expect this six-year-old to have strengthened up during the close season and looked up to winning at the very least a restricted race in 2006.
bullet USEDTOBEASWEETBOY
b,g. Sylvan Express - Royal Justice
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ P. Richardson
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ I like every now and again to take a chance and I think this one is most definitely the one this time. There won´t be many features of this nature that will include a horse with the form figures ´PUF´ with comments such as ´not jump well´ and ´reluctant to race´ in the write-ups. That said, there is no doubt that this five-year-old son of Sylvan Express did hint at having ability, most noticeably last time out at Garthorpe in May when he was staying on in 4th place only 10 lengths behind the leaders when falling at the 13th. This horse needs to polish up his act, however if he does we might well have something to celebrate at some stage of the 2005 campaign.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Forget the elation of having picked up Cannon Bridge last season, Usedtobeasweetboy put the broadest smile on my face when winning a maiden at Clifton-on-Dunsmore on his fifth attempt last term. This six-year-old also finished in the frame two other occasion, and was clear when falling at the fourteenth on his second start at Brafield-On-The-Green. There were far too may errors last season, however there were glimpses of ability as well... he could go either way this season
bullet WILLY BOY (USA)
ch,g. St. Jovite (USA) - Jetbeeah
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Jenny Gordon
¦¨¨”Į¨ÞOINTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ At first glance Willy Boy has little to recommend him.. after all this six-year-old son of St. Jovite has shown very little in Ireland when pulling up in three point-to-points at Summerhill, Loughanmore and Loughbrickland, however if you dig a little deeper, you´ll discover that he is out of the dam Jetbeeah, [a daughter of Lomond (USA)], who has produced Dazilyn Lady (USA), [a daughter of Zilzal (USA)], Simonda, [a daughter of Singspiel] and Miss Grace, [a daughter of Atticus (USA)], who´ve all won races on the flat. Therefore its possible that Willy Boy may not be a lost cause and therefore watch out for him in Maiden company... particularly if the market speaks favourably for him.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→Willy Boy showed promise on his British debut at Ampton in January when staying on at one pace to come home second behind No Nay Never [btn. 8lengths]... didn´t run again afterwards but I think he deserves another chance
bullet ZEŞTA FIESTA
b,g. El Conquistador - Little Lemon
¦¨¨trainer/owner¨¨¦ :→ Lord Daresbury
¦¨¨“Į¨ÞOĮNTӘЯ”¨¨¦ :→ Zeşta Fiesta offer a little more hope than may initially appear. This five-year-old has the right type of pedigree, being a daughter El Conquistador out of the mare Little Lemon, [a daughter of Spartan Jester), who won races between the flags as well as a Hunter Chase at Newton Abbott in the Mid-Nineties. Zeşta Fiesta has had one run to date, in a bumper at Sedgefield in October ´04, where he was always behind before coming home tenth, 54lengths behind the winner Blue Buster. The form nothing to write home about, however his pedigree is attractive and he does give offer hope that he might be capable of building of this form over the coming weeks.
¦¨¨“Update”¨¨¦ :→ Zeşta Fiesta won on the third time of asking at Mordon in March and appears to be improving... hopefully he should win more races in 2006.
