Search And Destroy had the misfortune to come up
against a useful early season juvenile like Frederic
Forever. He jumped really well for a debutante,
however this big gelding gave plenty of ground away
jumping (he gave each obstacle plenty of light). He
looked certain to win turning for home, but couldn't
quite get past the eventual winner. I'd be amazed if
he ever gets beaten again, and he looks one of the
better juveniles seen thus far this season.

WINNERS:<>:<>:<>:¥
Black Fashion made an eye-catching reappearance at
Perth recently, and could be in for a good season. She
showed up well for a long way, and although she
eventually finish a well beaten sixth, is a lot better
than the bare result suggests, for although she seemed
to recover from a bad mistake at the 12th, it may well
have taken more out of her than initially apparent.
From looking the likely winner turning for home, she
faded from the home turn, and was allowed to come home
in her own time. assuming she's now over that, Black
Fashion should fine races this term.

Mutinyonthebounty is added to this mainly because of
the rather derogatory comments made by certain members
on the press with regards to his win at Ascot. Whilst
not wanting to suggest he is the reincarnation of Sea
Bird II, i do think he deserves for winning this Group
2 event despite being as green as grass. Although he
travelled well throughout, the more pressured that was
applied, the more immature he became, and although he
went into the lead two out, his head carriage became
higher and pronounced as if to say "what
now?!!". Fortunately he hung on, and I think he
could develop into a useful middle distance horse next
term.

[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS]
Kempton Park's meeting of 24 September threw up a few
horses worthy of mention. In Division 2 of the mention
Miss Corniche ran a pleasing race despite running
green. Racing on the outside throughout. Miss Corniche
only really understood what was required in the final
quarter mile. It was to her credit that she managed to
get within 2lengths of the winner Red Rioja. She
should come of the run and should get her head in

Pip Payne's Ezz
Elkheil was another to catch the eye on Kempton's
card. His second to Mananan McLir ion the first
division of the colts & geldings maiden suggested
a win in the near future was possible. Given a
typically quiet Jamie Spencer ride, Ezz Elkheil made
smooth progress from the rear, to be second with two
furlongs to go. Although he drifted slightly through
greenness with a quarter to go, he still ran on to get
within 1-1/4 lengths of the winner. I'm not sure how
good the form is but he should be able to find himself
a race on this evidence

I was encouraged by the run of Reim's yesterday at
Stratford in the juvenile hurdle. He had shown
precious little ability of the flat, howevr he has the
size and scope of a jumper. It wasn't a great surprise
that he managed a creditable second to Little Task,
belying odds of 50/1 (hopefully those of you who do
the occasional "e/w alternative" were on
him). It not clear exactly what to make of the form;
Route Barree (our selection) was badly impeded
when a horse came down on the bend before two out,
however I think he did enough to win a little event,
probably somewhere like Market Rasen

Another to catch the eye at Stratford yesterday was
Xaipete in the handicap hurdle. Xaipete normally takes
in a race like this before embarking on a chasing
campaign. I thought he did enough to suggest that he
was as good as ever, racing sweetly ion the bridle
throughout before lack of match fitness telling in the
final half mile. If Norman Mason, and Richard Guest
has regained his confidence after a nasty looking fall
at Perth in the summer, it wouldnt surprise me if he
took a little handicap chase in the next month or so.

Elsundus is worthy of note, not only because he

Sandbaggedagain is worthy of note after two
eye-catching performances, the first, his first
attempt over fences, when he was travelling really
nicely when taking a horrible fall four out at
Stratford-Upon-Avon, and more recently yesterday at
Chester, where again he made smooth progress to look
really threatening, before stable companion Manzoni
settled the issue with a fine change of acceleration.
He looks like a horse due a win, and it may be worth
noting him for a race over obstacles where this
formerly useful stayer on the flat is better treated.

Lipstick was expected to win at bath on 24/08/01, and
she duly obliged, however there was plenty to like
about the performance of debutante Sister in Law.
Despite running green, she was actually in contention

[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE

A selection of yours truly, when winning at
Folkestone, Nisr stepped up in grade at Newbury on his
next start, and looked very unlucky in running, far
more so than Raheibb, who for the second time in
succession, seems to suffer under the Dettori drive (a
partnership not working at present), but who grabbed
more of the headline. Quite how he got into trouble
isn't clear as he was drawn on the outside, and
settled nicely there initially. Brought inside to
deliver his final thrust, he was repeatedly stopped in
his run, and at the very least looked as though he
could have got into the places. Nisr is still
unexposed, and appears to have another win in him this

It is commonplace to find a Martin Pipe juvenile at
the head of the betting in novice hurdles, however
thus far punters will be rubbing their burnt fingers
as all of them have been turned over. Whilst I might
understand why his French-breds are popular betting
proposition, backing his purchases from the English
flat scene blindly is fraught with danger. Anyone who
backed Tatty the Tank in any of his runs for Mr Pipe
on the flat would certainly have been cautious, as
whilst he has the scope for the game he is still very
green. It showed on his hurdling debut as he ran in
snatches and failed didn't really run on from two out.
He was only beaten 4 lengths though, and whilst he's

Ne M'Oublie Pas interests me as he is only five, and

showed the first signs of a possible when staying from
a mile back to finish third in a novice handicap.
After coming second over 3m2f at Newton Abbot on his

For a horse with such a glowing reputation, Corton, a

disappointing favourite on his debut, where he was
possibly too green/immature to do himself justice,
eventually finishing a disappointing last of five.
This isn't the case at home, and he could improve on

Although he is already one of my horses to follow this

unfair not to give further praise for such a good

really well in the final quarter. He has been tried
over several distances this season, and it appears six
furlongs, (or an easy seven) may be the optimum... may
get into the winning enclosure in his next couple of

An encouraging run from this useful two year old in

he made good headway on the inside when being stopped

Tillerman, having his first run of the season,
virtually confirmed my view that he was up to winning
in Group Company, with a solid fourth. Held up as
usual, I felt he was given plenty to do by Richard

When he was finally given his head, he simply flew,

nature of this contest he can land a maiden at least
in the short term. A step up in trip would also be

HORSES TO WATCH OUT FOR OVER THE COMING WEEKS
[#Added - Tuesday, 20
February 2001]
After the demise of Ultimate Accolade, and Hedgehunter
this week, you can understand the reluctance to talk
up bumper horses.
The latest hype horse is Francois Doumen trained
Carthago, who I suspect is being hyped up in because
he is trained by Doumen, but also because it is
assumed that he is french bred ... actually he is a
four year old gelding by Roselier! I don't know what
to make of his pedigree, other than he has a
traditional (good) British jumping pedigree... not
though the sort that would excel in bumpers
However if Peter O'Sullevan is on him for the
Cheltenham Bumper, he clearly must be talented. Even
if the rumours are right about Carthago, these horses
hopefully are nice sorts in their own right, and have
been pleasing connections at home;

[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE

One of the fascinations of point to points is that
most races are run over the same trip, usually 3miles.
Sometimes this enables some fascinating clashes being
horses who subsequently do well either at the minimum
trip or staying events, the one race that stays in the
mind, was the irish point in which Ask Tom 'outstayed'
a rather immature Suny Bay.
A pointer who I expected great things of is
Irisheyesaresmilin, and whilst he didn't run too badly
last term, he never really suggested that he could
live up to being labelled Caroline Bailey's "best
young prospect" at the beginning of last season.
This season already hasn't gone off to a good start as
he fell when travelling well at Cottenham's first
meeting. He pulled up next time after being given a
confidence building school
It is interesting that Caroline Bailey intends to run
him in hunter chases, as evidently she takes the view
that they are opportunities for this horse to race
over 2-2½miles which may be his best trip ... If he
does he's good enough to win, and may just pay to
follow.

VASCO DE GAMA (FR) ...
A NICE YOUNG PROSPECT

Whilst this has been a fascinating year so far,
persistent lameness is currently keeping me away from
the racetrack. This frustrates me, however this of
course doesn't apply to the Cheltenham Festival where
Hell will need to freeze over, to prevent my arrival.
On that point it you see a large man crawling through
the gates, ... say "Hello Rook!!" and I'll
do my best to respond!!!
It also means that I have not been able to attend as
many points to points as I liked, where watching the
whole build up of each race at close hand has a
uniqueness/atmosphere that only a few rules courses
have
Cottenham is one of my local track, (I'm spoilt in
this respect), and it is a shame that I was unable to
make their most recent meeting, as the performance of
La Vasco De Gama brightened up an ordinary card.
It probably wasn't a fair fight, as La Vasco De Gama
went into the race with some useful place form behind
him when trained in France, and by winning a 2m4f
maiden he achieved nothing. However it was the manner
(apparently) by which he undertook the task that was
most impressive, the fact that he also easily pulled
30 lengths clear of his rivals, in a time 9 seconds
faster than the second division, suggests he is a
young horse of great potential
Bill Warner currently trains him, however Judy Wilson
has horses with Nicky Henderson, and I'd suggest that
this horses future might lay with him. I shall be
keeping a close eye on his for the remainder of the
season

As a fan on the french non thoroughbred, I can
understand why punters may be punch-drunk, with
constant references to there being another 'good
thing' from France, however you do get a few genuine
ones along the way. We have been spoilt with the
exploits of the likes of Jair Du Cochet, Bilboa and
most recently Royal Auclair in the juvenile division,
and have the highly touted Azertyuiop to come, however
Martin Pipe may well have another interesting one his
hands in the shape of Doukash. By Cadoudal, Doukash
has only had the two starts over obstacles in France;
He put up a good effort on his debut finishing 8
lengths behind Robin Des Champs (who would be rated
currently in the top ten juveniles in France over
hurdles), and Jet Des Pres in the Prix Rush Hurdle at
Auteuil in March, He then followed that effort by
chasing home Maillot Jaune in the Prix Chateauvert
(Hurdle) again, at Auteuil in May of last year (beaten
6 lengths). Although that doesn't appear as good an
effort Maillot Jaune is himself a useful sort over
both hurdles and fences
I've noticed he's been given a few entries for
Cheltenham, and whilst the weather may have scuppered
his efforts for qualification, that could turn out to
be a blessing in disguise, as he looks certain to win
races in the future, and may have benefited for being
given the time to mature/fill out
I think he's certain to make his mark in the future
anyway, and I'll be noting his progress with next
season in mind.

I wrote the following piece on Union Man in June of
last year, I've noticed entries for him in Hunter
chasers so hopefully you'll get an opportunity to see
why so many people were excited about him
"I, like many point-to-point fans have had the
pleasure of enjoying a very good season's sport. It
seems as though there are a decent crop of youngsters
who should come through the ranks over the coming
seasons. Of these the best in terms of proven ability
appears to be Union Man, and since he's just
annihilated another field today at Garthorpe, I'd
thought I'd take the opportunity to introduce him to a
wider audience because he is without doubt, a horse of
considerable potential. We have no hesitation of
agreeing with Pat Murphy when he said that at this
stage in his career he would be better than Castle
Mane. Their backgrounds at this time are similar.
Union Man is so far unbeaten, and whilst you could say
he hasn't been really tested, you wouldn't expect a
trainer to go to the well after four runs on the
track. He first signalled to me that he had potential
when winning a 27-runner affair at Garthorpe. He led
most of the way, and impressed with the manner in
which he accelerated away from that field. Plenty of
winners have come from those who finished behind him.
It was a very polished effort. His greatest assets
appear to be both his stamina and his pace.
Considering he's put in another decent time today, it
is boosted further by the fact he ran the second
circuit quicker than the first, despite being heavily
eased down after the last... more evidence that he
possesses pace, as well as an abundance of stamina. .
The beauty about him is that time is on his side.
They're no need to rush him. They could quite easily
keep him to point to points next term to educate him
further, (I'd think along the lines of something like
the John Corbett personally), and still have time to
launch a serious assault on the Cheltenham and Aintree
hunter chases. Owner Philip Newton, and trainer Bill
Warner have something to look forward to here. Pen him
down for your list of horses to follow next year, so
you don't forget the name in
