SEARCH AND DESTROY (USA)
[Added Sunday, 7 October 2001]
¥:<>:<>:<>:FUTURE WINNERS:<>:<>:<>:¥
Search And Destroy had the misfortune to come up against a useful early season juvenile like Frederic Forever. He jumped really well for a debutante, however this big gelding gave plenty of ground away jumping (he gave each obstacle plenty of light). He looked certain to win turning for home, but couldn't quite get past the eventual winner. I'd be amazed if he ever gets beaten again, and he looks one of the better juveniles seen thus far this season.

BLACK FASHION
[Added Sunday, 7 October 2001]
¥:<>:<>:<>:FUTURE WINNERS:<>:<>:<>:¥
Black Fashion made an eye-catching reappearance at Perth recently, and could be in for a good season. She showed up well for a long way, and although she eventually finish a well beaten sixth, is a lot better than the bare result suggests, for although she seemed to recover from a bad mistake at the 12th, it may well have taken more out of her than initially apparent. From looking the likely winner turning for home, she faded from the home turn, and was allowed to come home in her own time. assuming she's now over that, Black Fashion should fine races this term.

MUTINYONTHEBOUNTY
[Added Sunday, 7 October 2001]
¥:<>:<>:<>:FUTURE WINNERS:<>:<>:<>:¥
Mutinyonthebounty is added to this mainly because of the rather derogatory comments made by certain members on the press with regards to his win at Ascot. Whilst not wanting to suggest he is the reincarnation of Sea Bird II, i do think he deserves for winning this Group 2 event despite being as green as grass. Although he travelled well throughout, the more pressured that was applied, the more immature he became, and although he went into the lead two out, his head carriage became higher and pronounced as if to say "what now?!!". Fortunately he hung on, and I think he could develop into a useful middle distance horse next term.

MISS CORNICHE

[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS]

Kempton Park's meeting of 24 September threw up a few horses worthy of mention. In Division 2 of the mention Miss Corniche ran a pleasing race despite running green. Racing on the outside throughout. Miss Corniche only really understood what was required in the final quarter mile. It was to her credit that she managed to get within 2lengths of the winner Red Rioja. She should come of the run and should get her head in front before the end of the season

Behind Miss Corniche, Zsazsabella also managed to catch my eye. Although she never really got competitive she did well to finish fourth, having given the outside to none. This was a good introduction, and it will be interesting to see how she progresses

EZZ ELKHEIL
[*Added] 30/09/01, 8:02:58 AM
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS]

Pip Payne's Ezz Elkheil was another to catch the eye on Kempton's card. His second to Mananan McLir ion the first division of the colts & geldings maiden suggested a win in the near future was possible. Given a typically quiet Jamie Spencer ride, Ezz Elkheil made smooth progress from the rear, to be second with two furlongs to go. Although he drifted slightly through greenness with a quarter to go, he still ran on to get within 1-1/4 lengths of the winner. I'm not sure how good the form is but he should be able to find himself a race on this evidence

Millenium Dragon made a pleasing debut at Yarmouth on 4 September when beating all bar David Loder's more experienced runner Samhari. He came well clear on his rivals that day and should come on a lot for the experience. I'd be surprised if he didn't go one better before the end of the season

David Loder introduced Yasey, a Japanese bred colt by Sunday Silence colt, who is a half-brother to flat and jumps winner Eid at Doncaster on Wednesday. He made a bold bid challenging easy winner Wanchi inside the last quarter, before being eased when it was clear that it wasn't his day. Yasey may not be the brightest star in David Loder's yard, but he looks up to winning before the end of the season

[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO FUTURE WINNERS]

John Oxx's Saxe made an eye-catching debut at Galway on 11/09/01, when finishing third to Canberra in the mile maiden. In the hand of Mary Williamson, Saxe made up for a sluggish start to stay on really strongly in the final quarter to get within 8 1/2 lengths of the winner. Improvement is guaranteed and I'm sure a maiden is within his grasp

Burj Al Arab caught my eye when finishing sixth at chepstow earlier in the week, when he made up a lot of ground up in the final quarter mile. This 2-y-o son of Alderbrook appreciated the step up to a mile, and whilst he may have a long-term future over obstacles, Martin Pipe may be able to find Burj Al Arab races this term over 8-10f, particularly in nurseries

[*ADDED] - 15/09/01 06:15 PM
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS]

Dream With Me, who has useful form in handicap company in France last term, shaped up with plenty of promise at Doncaster yesterday finishing a respectable fifth behind the useful winner High Pitched. He was bough with a jumping campaign in mind, and this good effort bodes well for future runs in that sphere

REIMS
[#Added 9 September 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

I was encouraged by the run of Reim's yesterday at Stratford in the juvenile hurdle. He had shown precious little ability of the flat, howevr he has the size and scope of a jumper. It wasn't a great surprise that he managed a creditable second to Little Task, belying odds of 50/1 (hopefully those of you who do the occasional "e/w alternative" were on him). It not clear exactly what to make of the form; Route Barree (our selection) was badly impeded when a horse came down on the bend before two out, however I think he did enough to win a little event, probably somewhere like Market Rasen

XAIPETE
[#Added 9 September 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

Another to catch the eye at Stratford yesterday was Xaipete in the handicap hurdle. Xaipete normally takes in a race like this before embarking on a chasing campaign. I thought he did enough to suggest that he was as good as ever, racing sweetly ion the bridle throughout before lack of match fitness telling in the final half mile. If Norman Mason, and Richard Guest has regained his confidence after a nasty looking fall at Perth in the summer, it wouldnt surprise me if he took a little handicap chase in the next month or so.

ELSUNDUS (USA)
[#Added 9 September 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

Elsundus is worthy of note, not only because he thrashed his field of maiden at Salisbury by 7lengths, but more because he so nearly didn't race (and could have sustain a serious injury) when going down in the stalls prior to the start. The incident looked ugly, so the outcome of the race is all the more meritorious. It'll be interesting to see how he is placed in the future

SANDBAGGEDAGAIN
[#Added 2 September 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

Sandbaggedagain is worthy of note after two eye-catching performances, the first, his first attempt over fences, when he was travelling really nicely when taking a horrible fall four out at Stratford-Upon-Avon, and more recently yesterday at Chester, where again he made smooth progress to look really threatening, before stable companion Manzoni settled the issue with a fine change of acceleration. He looks like a horse due a win, and it may be worth noting him for a race over obstacles where this formerly useful stayer on the flat is better treated.

[#Added 2 September 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

Lipstick was expected to win at bath on 24/08/01, and she duly obliged, however there was plenty to like about the performance of debutante Sister in Law. Despite running green, she was actually in contention until a furlong from home, eventual finishing 4lengths behind the easy winner. Sister in Law was friendless that day [16/1 opened 8/1], and she should improve for the experience... there is a little race in her this season.

NISR
[#Added 25 August 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

A selection of yours truly, when winning at Folkestone, Nisr stepped up in grade at Newbury on his next start, and looked very unlucky in running, far more so than Raheibb, who for the second time in succession, seems to suffer under the Dettori drive (a partnership not working at present), but who grabbed more of the headline. Quite how he got into trouble isn't clear as he was drawn on the outside, and settled nicely there initially. Brought inside to deliver his final thrust, he was repeatedly stopped in his run, and at the very least looked as though he could have got into the places. Nisr is still unexposed, and appears to have another win in him this season

[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]
27-08-01 Newcastle, 7GF, 2/8, shd, Fashionable Man [6/1]

Asha'th was my eachway selection on his debut and therefore he was always likely to catch my eye on this his second start at Newmarket. He belied his odds of 33/1, when finishing a creditable third to the highly regarded Grampian, beaten less than 3lengths. On this evidence, a maiden at or around this trip [7fulongs] looks well within his grasp

Not to be confused with the handicapper in training with John Dunlop, Arc En Ciel (ARG), made his British debut at Salisbury staying on nicely to finished third to easy winner Fallen Star. Being Argentinean bred, he currently has the advantage of a 3lbs weight allowance, which with careful placement he could make good use of.... a step up in trip shouldn't be a problem either.

Made the fatal error in taking on Receivedwiththanx for the lead. As a result, he never really was going to be able to withstand a late thrust from his opponents, so it was to his credit that only Bragadino and Naheef got by him. 23-08-01 Folkestone, 7GF , 1/11, 2½L, Aglow [½f]

Having talked her up in preview, it was pleasing to see how well this filly feared on her debut. Tashawak was expected to take this and duly obliged, but Bell for Marlin gave her plenty to think about, really finding her stride in the final quarter mile, and only just failed by a short-head to beat the favourite. One of the most interesting performances at the Galway Festival was that produced by John Oxx's Dibiya who won a maiden on Friday's card. Whilst Askham took the plaudit with a scintillating win, some may have been missed an interesting performance by John Gosden's colt having his first effort over 1m2f. Whilst he wouldnt have won, Muthaaber, who had been held up in last place, had a poor run up the straight, eventually having to switched round opponents to make his run. As he had previously looked a little one-paced over a mile, the step up in trip clearly suited, and he may well be up to taking a decent prize during the remainder of the season

TATTY THE TANK
[#Added 8 August 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

It is commonplace to find a Martin Pipe juvenile at the head of the betting in novice hurdles, however thus far punters will be rubbing their burnt fingers as all of them have been turned over. Whilst I might understand why his French-breds are popular betting proposition, backing his purchases from the English flat scene blindly is fraught with danger. Anyone who backed Tatty the Tank in any of his runs for Mr Pipe on the flat would certainly have been cautious, as whilst he has the scope for the game he is still very green. It showed on his hurdling debut as he ran in snatches and failed didn't really run on from two out. He was only beaten 4 lengths though, and whilst he's no worldbeater, a long-term view is advised, and it's possible he may progress enough to win a race or two

[#Added 8 August 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

Ne M'Oublie Pas interests me as he is only five, and has as abundance of experience over hurdles and fences mainly in France. He didn't cut much ice during the summer. However a step up in trip 2m7f over fences showed the first signs of a possible when staying from a mile back to finish third in a novice handicap. After coming second over 3m2f at Newton Abbot on his next start, he carried website confidence when outstaying Butler John back over that course and distance on monday. That was off of a mark of only 84 and though he'll go up for that success, extreme distances may suit, and further successes are possible

For a horse with such a glowing reputation, Corton, a full brother to stablemate Smoothie, and a half brother to the top class sprinter Pipalong was a very disappointing favourite on his debut, where he was possibly too green/immature to do himself justice, eventually finishing a disappointing last of five. This isn't the case at home, and he could improve on that initial effort. Its quite conceivable that he could be a slow learner, and may only develop when he turns three (as Smoothie did) but don't be too surprised if he steps up on that initial effort in the meantime.

Although he is already one of my horses to follow this season, as I put up Pugin for the Irish Derby where he was a honourable 4th, at 100/1, it seems a little unfair not to give further praise for such a good effort. Being stoutly bred, Pugin was probably made more use of that was ideal, but had plenty of his rivals, bar Galileo, and Mordshi in trouble turning for home. He stayed on really strongly up the straight, only just giving way to Golan in the last half furlong... Races like the St Leger or Irish equivalent look ideal, and it will be a surprise if he doesn't build on this effort

From the same yard as Pugin, hails the Saudi bred filly Sarayah. Like Pugin she is stoutly bred, and is a big backward filly. It was probably this abundance of stamina that enabled her to win at the Curragh, as she appeared to be in trouble when the pace quickened early in the straight however she battled well to get the better of Moonbi Ridge close home. She clearly stays well and could be interesting if she can get into a handicap on a reasonable mark.

As mentioned in preview yesterday, we have long since held the view that Saabirr would excel when dropping into handicap company, having shown plenty of ability, during his initial educational runs. You'd have to say he was very unlucky yesterday, after only just failing to get up, after experiencing no luck in running in the final quarter, before staying on to great effect in the final half furlong.... in a few more strides he would surely have got up and must be considered an unlucky loser.... compensation awaits

Hammer and Sickle has clearly been a horse that Mark Johnston thought a bit of, having retained him in training despite a succession of duck eggs. He has been an eachway selection on more than one occasion this term; therefore it was interesting to see him run so well behind Brevity at Epsom in midweek; staying on really well in the final quarter. Tillerman, having his first run of the season, virtually confirmed my view that he was up to winning in Group Company, with a solid fourth. Held up as usual, I felt he was given plenty to do by Richard Hughes, and was in the ruck with two furlongs to go. When he was finally given his head, he simply flew, and whilst Harmonic Way took the plaudits, he certainly may find Tillerman a harder nut to crack next time out

Useful performer - may be in for a very good season judged on his smart re-appearance effort at York (May 17) over 6F at York. He jumped his rivals silly here, and I'll be surprised if he isn't saved for an autumn campaign. In that race Inch Fountain ran with credit, despite finishing 40lengths behind the winner. He has done me several good turns when he raced between the flags with the Crows. He has followed many charges from that stable, which have been bought to race at Roger Curtis's yard. Weakened noticeably in the final furlong on his reappearance (6F Pontefract 23 April) but nonetheless put in a brave effort in a decent event for the track. Showing plenty of speed throughout he clearly retains his ability. Best last term over the minimum trip expect this one to soon get back to winning ways.

Progressive sprinter last year who had clearly been laid out for the Town Moor Handicap at Doncaster (23 March) judging by the market support he received. Running well to be fifth he failed this time to land the gamble but he should be watched closely in near to hand engagements when we expect him to recoup losses.

Runner up to Nimello in The Lincoln (24 March). One I have had my eye on for sometime, this one looks to have done well physically this year and the 4lbs rise for his Lincoln effort is not harsh. Intended runner in the Rosebury next time and not hard to visualise him going close in that with normal improvement expected for the run.

Never able to challenge in Spring Mile (23 March) but was not given a hard time when it was clear he had no chance of being involved in the finish. Showed clear signs though of retaining his ability. I expect this one to go well next time - 7F or an easy mile might bring out the best in this one.

Although still a maiden after three runs (mostly recently runner up in a maiden at Doncaster behind Prize Winner), do not let that put you of this one. A banker for any maiden, his future lies in handicaps for which he is now qualified. Well regarded by Barry Hills (a Derby entry) this stoutly bred individual is sure to pay his way when stepped up to 12F+ in the coming months.

First class effort in The Lincoln (24 March) under 9:6 in the most testing of conditions. Not raised by the handicapper for that effort, this one looks one very much one to follow this year (probably a Group horse) but likely to continue to contest handicaps. His division of Prince Alex and Nooshman last season shows what he is capable of.

BUMPER HORSES TO WATCH OUT FOR OVER THE COMING WEEKS
[#Added - Tuesday, 20 February 2001]
After the demise of Ultimate Accolade, and Hedgehunter this week, you can understand the reluctance to talk up bumper horses.

The latest hype horse is Francois Doumen trained Carthago, who I suspect is being hyped up in because he is trained by Doumen, but also because it is assumed that he is french bred ... actually he is a four year old gelding by Roselier! I don't know what to make of his pedigree, other than he has a traditional (good) British jumping pedigree... not though the sort that would excel in bumpers

However if Peter O'Sullevan is on him for the Cheltenham Bumper, he clearly must be talented. Even if the rumours are right about Carthago, these horses hopefully are nice sorts in their own right, and have been pleasing connections at home;

IRISHEYESARESMILIN
[#Added - Tuesday, 20 February 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

One of the fascinations of point to points is that most races are run over the same trip, usually 3miles. Sometimes this enables some fascinating clashes being horses who subsequently do well either at the minimum trip or staying events, the one race that stays in the mind, was the irish point in which Ask Tom 'outstayed' a rather immature Suny Bay.

A pointer who I expected great things of is Irisheyesaresmilin, and whilst he didn't run too badly last term, he never really suggested that he could live up to being labelled Caroline Bailey's "best young prospect" at the beginning of last season. This season already hasn't gone off to a good start as he fell when travelling well at Cottenham's first meeting. He pulled up next time after being given a confidence building school

It is interesting that Caroline Bailey intends to run him in hunter chases, as evidently she takes the view that they are opportunities for this horse to race over 2-2½miles which may be his best trip ... If he does he's good enough to win, and may just pay to follow.

LA VASCO DE GAMA (FR) ... A NICE YOUNG PROSPECT
[#Added - Tuesday, 20 February 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]

Whilst this has been a fascinating year so far, persistent lameness is currently keeping me away from the racetrack. This frustrates me, however this of course doesn't apply to the Cheltenham Festival where Hell will need to freeze over, to prevent my arrival. On that point it you see a large man crawling through the gates, ... say "Hello Rook!!" and I'll do my best to respond!!!

It also means that I have not been able to attend as many points to points as I liked, where watching the whole build up of each race at close hand has a uniqueness/atmosphere that only a few rules courses have

Cottenham is one of my local track, (I'm spoilt in this respect), and it is a shame that I was unable to make their most recent meeting, as the performance of La Vasco De Gama brightened up an ordinary card.

It probably wasn't a fair fight, as La Vasco De Gama went into the race with some useful place form behind him when trained in France, and by winning a 2m4f maiden he achieved nothing. However it was the manner (apparently) by which he undertook the task that was most impressive, the fact that he also easily pulled 30 lengths clear of his rivals, in a time 9 seconds faster than the second division, suggests he is a young horse of great potential

Bill Warner currently trains him, however Judy Wilson has horses with Nicky Henderson, and I'd suggest that this horses future might lay with him. I shall be keeping a close eye on his for the remainder of the season

As a fan on the french non thoroughbred, I can understand why punters may be punch-drunk, with constant references to there being another 'good thing' from France, however you do get a few genuine ones along the way. We have been spoilt with the exploits of the likes of Jair Du Cochet, Bilboa and most recently Royal Auclair in the juvenile division, and have the highly touted Azertyuiop to come, however Martin Pipe may well have another interesting one his hands in the shape of Doukash. By Cadoudal, Doukash has only had the two starts over obstacles in France; He put up a good effort on his debut finishing 8 lengths behind Robin Des Champs (who would be rated currently in the top ten juveniles in France over hurdles), and Jet Des Pres in the Prix Rush Hurdle at Auteuil in March, He then followed that effort by chasing home Maillot Jaune in the Prix Chateauvert (Hurdle) again, at Auteuil in May of last year (beaten 6 lengths). Although that doesn't appear as good an effort Maillot Jaune is himself a useful sort over both hurdles and fences

I've noticed he's been given a few entries for Cheltenham, and whilst the weather may have scuppered his efforts for qualification, that could turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as he looks certain to win races in the future, and may have benefited for being given the time to mature/fill out

I think he's certain to make his mark in the future anyway, and I'll be noting his progress with next season in mind.

DARK SHELL ... IS DEFINITELY A DARK HORSE TO WATCH OUT FOR

A timely reminder of the imminent arrival on the track of one of our horses to follow Dark Shell. This son of Darshaan developed into a useful performer two years ago; when he followed an easy win the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury with a close third to Ungaro and Sumitas in the Group 1 WGZ Bank-Deutschlandpreis at Dusseldorf. Unfortunately, that was the last we saw of him on the flat due to injury, however he has been doing well since his arrival at Seven Barrows and could be anything should he takes to hurdles.

UNION MAN ... WATCH OUT FOR HIM IN HUNTER CHASES
[#Added - Tuesday, 13 February 2001]
[RECORD SINCE BEING ADDED TO "FUTURE WINNERS"]
23-02-01 Kempton,24Gd,  1/5, 1L, Chasing The Bride [13/8]

I wrote the following piece on Union Man in June of last year, I've noticed entries for him in Hunter chasers so hopefully you'll get an opportunity to see why so many people were excited about him

"I, like many point-to-point fans have had the pleasure of enjoying a very good season's sport. It seems as though there are a decent crop of youngsters who should come through the ranks over the coming seasons. Of these the best in terms of proven ability appears to be Union Man, and since he's just annihilated another field today at Garthorpe, I'd thought I'd take the opportunity to introduce him to a wider audience because he is without doubt, a horse of considerable potential. We have no hesitation of agreeing with Pat Murphy when he said that at this stage in his career he would be better than Castle Mane. Their backgrounds at this time are similar. Union Man is so far unbeaten, and whilst you could say he hasn't been really tested, you wouldn't expect a trainer to go to the well after four runs on the track. He first signalled to me that he had potential when winning a 27-runner affair at Garthorpe. He led most of the way, and impressed with the manner in which he accelerated away from that field. Plenty of winners have come from those who finished behind him. It was a very polished effort. His greatest assets appear to be both his stamina and his pace. Considering he's put in another decent time today, it is boosted further by the fact he ran the second circuit quicker than the first, despite being heavily eased down after the last... more evidence that he possesses pace, as well as an abundance of stamina. . The beauty about him is that time is on his side. They're no need to rush him. They could quite easily keep him to point to points next term to educate him further, (I'd think along the lines of something like the John Corbett personally), and still have time to launch a serious assault on the Cheltenham and Aintree hunter chases. Owner Philip Newton, and trainer Bill Warner have something to look forward to here. Pen him down for your list of horses to follow next year, so you don't forget the name in
