GRAND NATIONAL MEETING 2000 -

Grand National Meeting __ Day One
Thursday 6 April 2000
2.00 Barton And Guestier Top Novices' Hurdle (Class A) (Grade 2), 4 Year olds and upwards, to be run over, 2miles 110yds, 13 runners.
1 115351 Aldino (GER) 611 8Ronald O'Leary
2 111245 Rodock (FR) 611 8M Pipe
3 1111 Double Blade 511 3Mrs M Reveley
4 301P41 Afrostar 611 0M Hourigan
5 21/100-0 Biliverdin 611 0G Balding
6 32 Caxton Star 711 0K Bailey R Wakley
7 21 Docklands Limo 711 0N Twiston-Davies
8 0-52114 Gold Merit (NZ) 911 0S Brookshaw
9 1 Latalomne (USA) 611 0B Ellison
10 022 Michel De Moeurs (FR) 511 0P Nicholls
11 114114 Phardante Flyer 611 0P Hobbs
12 P11514 Captain Miller 410 13N Henderson
13 222 Moulouya (FR) 510 9J Best P Hide 20

BETTING SHOW; WHAT YOUR PAPERS WILL PROBABLY SHOW TOMORROW: 5-2 Rodock, 7-2 Phardante Flyer, 13-2 Aldino, 10 Double Blade, Afrostar and Captain Miller, 12 others.
Possibles __Aldino, useful novice in Ireland, who gave weight and a beating, to Well Ridden last time out; Rodock who showed that Pipe hadn’t 'burnt him out behind Sausalito Boy at Cheltenham, although Phardante Flyer looks to have the beating of him strictly on the book; Double Blade has looked a really useful tool all season, and has had a pipe opener on the flat for this; Afrostar caused a fright over Christmas and has also won his last outing; Docklands Limo, formerly useful on the flat, looks to be going the right way over jumps, if his last run is to be believed Gold Merit looked good in two victories against inferior opponents but disapointed in a handicap; Michel de Mouers has run well enough in his last two starts to suggest that he is up to winning a decent novice hurdle; Captain Miller looked good when winning impressively at Huntingdon, but was very disappointing last time out.The 4long Pole’s Selection__It is a measure of how potent the "Pipe McCoy" factor is, that Rodock is quoted as favorite is this, when he finished behind Phardante Flyer, and now has to concede 8lbs. I'm not certain that these odds truely reflect the likely SPs, however I do think they are correct, as long as Rodock isn’t going to the well 'once too often'. Rodock's condition and attitude; so unfairly criticised in his previous two efforts, were not in evidence that day, and if it were not for a bad blunder at the last, he may well have been placed. I'm sure he'll run well and is my selection to beat Phardante Flyer, and Double Blade

Eachway Alternative(s)?__Docklands Limo did win well last time, and is no forlorn hope.
What about a long Shot?

2.35 Martell Cup Chase (Class A) (Grade 2) 5 Year olds and upwards, to be run over 3miles and a furlong, 5 runners.
131-1114 See More Business 1012 0P Nicholls M A Fitzgerald 21 D,BF Robert Ogden
245U0-55 Lake Kariba 911 4Miss Venetia Williams A P McCoy 21 The Winning Line
31-4PU2F Macgeorge 1011 4 R Lee A Maguire 40 CD and Mrs. J H Watson
43-63243 Mulligan 1011 4 A King R Johnson 42 Lady Harris
53/-54233 Strong Promise 911 4C Kinane R Thornton 21 Exors of the late Mr G A Hubbard

BETTING SHOW; WHAT YOUR PAPERS WILL PROBABLY SHOW TOMORROW: 10-11 See More Business, 3 Strong Promise, 5 Lake Kariba, 8 Macgeorge, 16 Mulligan.

Possibles;
See More Business is the form horse going into the race, but despite his wins in the King George, and AON Chase, seems to have a hard task trying to concede 10lbs to some of these. Lake Kariba was the revelation in the Gold Cup, and I suspect he can improve of that performance now that connections are satisfied that he stays this sort of trip. MacGeorge does seem to have lost his way, and it would be a surprise if he won this; Mulligan does have the advantage of bypassing Cheltenham, and may therefore run a lot better that current form figures suggest he should Strong Promise has a great of winning this if his good running the Gold Cup is believed, but is it accurate?

The 4long Pole’s Selection __ Strictly on the book, Strong Promise should win this, especially as he holds See More Business and Lake Kariba on Gold Cup form, at these weights. Whilst I’m pleased he confirmed that he retains his ability, the fact remains that it is awhile since he won a race, and whilst he’s my choice, a part of me wants to see him ‘go through with it’ before backing him at protracted odds. Lake Kariba will exploit any weaknesses if that fear proves to be accurate
Eachway Alternative(s)?__Lake Kariba

What about a long Shot?

3.10 Sandeman Maghull Novices' Chase (Class A) (Grade 1) 5 Year olds and upwards, to be run over, 2mles, 6 runners.
1 44-1115 Bellator 7 11 4 Miss Venetia Williams
2 F12112 Cenkos (FR) 611 4O Sherwood
3 122-113 Decoupage 811 4C Egerton
4 03122F Honey Trader 811 4M Hourigan
5 652F3U Corniche 511 1N Twiston-Davies
6 16411F Frozen Groom (FR) 511 1N Meade
BETTING SHOW; WHAT YOUR PAPERS WILL PROBABLY SHOW TOMORROW: 9-4 Decoupage, 5-2 Cenkos, 7-2 Bellator and Frozen Groom, 14 Honey Trader, 33 Corniche.
Possibles; Bellator, more likely to run his race in this small field, than the ultra competitive Arkle, Cenkos, surprised me with his stout second, in that race, and still appears to be improving, Decoupage, So impressive at Sandown before a poor show at Cheltenham, Frozen Groom, in front when falling three out in the Arkle, must go well if he’s over the experience.
The 4long Pole’s Selection__ If I were going to have a bet on this race, I’d want to see the condition of this quartet before making up my mind. Whilst I didn’t think he’d win the race, I was disapointed at the appearance of Decoupage, whose preparation does seem to have been rushed (I thought he looked a bit light). Now back on a flat track I would be more confident if I can be certain that that race hadn’t left his mark, and more importantly, his jumping held together. He is my choice but obviously I am not as confident

3.45 Martell Fox Hunters' Chase (Class B), 6 Year olds and upwards, to be run over, 2mles, and 6 furlongs, 27 runners.

26 40-P0P0 Coolvawn Lady 1111 9D Brace
27 2/121D-2 Hiltonstown Lass 1011 9T Walford

BETTING SHOW; WHAT YOUR PAPERS WILL PROBABLY SHOW TOMORROW: 4 Secret Bay, 5 Last Option, 6 Spot Thedifference, 10 Bells Life and Struggles Glory, 14 Howayman, Little Buck and Rossell Island, 16 others.
Possibles__Bells Life, and Easy winner of his only hunter chase this term, Donickmore, in good form between the flags in ireland
Gale Toi, ran well in this last year, and should so again, if he comes on from his last run Halham Tarn, Valiant Warrior, The Parish Pump, Hiltenstown Lady, Coolvawn Lady, Rossell Island, and Howayman,
have been running well between the flag/in hunter chases
Last Option makes a quick appearance after winning at Towcester last Saturday Little Buck won two hunter chases impressively and should go well if he jumps round Secret Bay seems to have improved for going to Caroline Bailey’s yard, and should go well Spot the difference has been aimed at this for a while, and his second to Sheltering and Dan The Man deserves respect in this field Struggles Glory is a good horse still but is he being ably assisted in the saddle ?The 4long Pole’s Selection__If he has truly got over exertions of last weekend, Last Option looks to have a strong claim in this. In truth, although he only won a head, he did nothing between the last two and finished with his ears pricked, after a good day out, and its that factor that swung it his way
Eachway Alternative(s)?__I believe Struggles Glory will be trained under rules next term, and he may well repay that gesture, and in he gets into a rhythm he is a useful horse who may well gallop most of these into submission, you’ll get a good run for your money !!!What about a long Shot ? A toss-up between Valiant Warrior who we know can jump these fences, Coolvawn Lady who ran well in the Foxhunters, and The Parish Pump. Coolvawn Lady gets the vote.

4.20 Glenlivet Anniversary 4-y-o Novices' Hurdle (Class A) (Grade 2) , 4 year olds only, to be run over, 2mles 110yds, 12 runners.
1 21 Bounce Back (USA) 411 4F Doumen

10 1F10P Perugino Diamond 411 0M Pipe
11 r11143 Faith Again 410 9A Streeter
12 026 Karowna 410 9S Brookshaw
BETTING SHOW; WHAT YOUR PAPERS WILL PROBABLY SHOW TOMORROW: 2 Architect, 4 Lord Brex, 5 High Stakes, 8 Bounce Back, 10 Canta Ke Brave, 12 Fable, 14 others
Possibles__Architect, two solid runs to date over hurdles, and a respectable fourth in the Triumph Hurdle Bounce Back, and Exit To Wave, two french raiders who could be anything Fable, and Periguino Diamond carried all before them in Ireland early on in the season, but have disappointed of late. Greyfield was an early casualty at Cheltenham but was previously impressive at Wincanton.
As does Lord Brex, though his performance was better than most pundits expected. Canta Ke Brave has won two and could be anything
High Stakes looked useful early on but Mixsterthetrixster hasn’t franked the form. The 4long Pole’s Selection__Get onto the 10’s (if offered) on Canta Ke Brave, who has been laid out for this by Jim Old. He has impressed in his races, and can overturn Triumph hurdle form by taking thisEachway Alternative(s)?__Bounce Back has been chosen to represent the Doumen Camp, and his efforts in France don’t look too bad, and he may well surprise
What about a long Shot ?__Greyfield

4.50 Chivas Regal Handicap Chase, 5 Year olds and upwards, to be run over 3miules and a furlong, 12 runners.
1 1-42234 Bouchasson (FR) 711 10P Hobbs
2 30135F Bertone 1111 9K Bailey
3 135-22F Ashwell Boy 911 8M Pipe
 4 223U31 Linton Rocks 1111 7P Nicholls
5 353-13P Stately Home 911 5P Bowen
 6 24-4102 King of Sparta 711 0J Portman
7 123411 Honey Mount 910 13R Alner
8 21F122 Merry Path 610 5O Sherwood
9 3153-34 Clifton Set 910 3C Mann
10 32P122 Radiation 710 2J O'Neill
11 P/11P-43 Lough Tully 1010 0F Jordan
12 F16350 Enivrant (FR) 810 0M Pipe
BETTING SHOW; WHAT YOUR PAPERS WILL PROBABLY SHOW TOMORROW: 4 Bouchasson, 9-2 Honey Mount, 6 Linton Rocks, 8 Ashwell Boy and King of Sparta, 10 Bertone and Merry Path, 12 others.
The 4long Pole’s Selection__I suspect that Honey Mount will be the suspects of a large punt to repeat his Kim Muir win here. He did make one bad blunder two out, but couldn’t have impressed more, and he will be hard to beat if he’s in this form
Eachway Alternative(s)?__Merry Path, may well need the blinkers tried here, but he is in good heart, and should give a good account of himself

5.20 Barton and Guestier Handicap Hurdle 5 Year olds and upwards, to be run over, 3miles and 110yds, 13 runners.
1 P0-1421 Boss Doyle 811 10M Morris

5 115300 Daraydan 810 9M Pipe
6 420-540 Darapour 610 8A O'Brien
7 213040 Picket Piece 910 7A King
8 104F20 You're Agoodun 810 4M Pipe
9 /36P/-20 Warner For Players 910 2M Pipe
10 613/4-21 Frantic Tan 810 1N Twiston-Davies
11 U3361 Springfield Scally 710 1
12 45-5631 Globe Runner 710 0J O'Neill
13 305111 Sharazan 710 0O O'Neill
BETTING SHOW; WHAT YOUR PAPERS WILL PROBABLY SHOW TOMORROW: 6 Ross Moff, 13-2 Frantic Tan, 7 Boss Doyle and Globe Runner, 8 Darapour, Picket Piece, You're Agoodun and Springfield Scally, 10 others.
Possibles; Boss Doyle, Ross Moff, and Darapour give Ireland a very strong hand in this. All are running well of last, and can be expected to figure in this Picket Piece, Youre a Goodun, Artadoin Lad, and Frantic Tan looks likeliest to keep this at home
The 4long Pole’s Selection __I do think the Irish have a strong hand, but Frantic Tan looks well treated on 10-1, and this formerly useful bumper can set this field a merry dance and win the finale, chiefly at Darapour’s expense, who almost always seems to be given too much to do
Eachway Alternative(s)? __Darapour, it has to be
What about a long Shot?__Thrower has been wasting his time running around the sand, but does showed enough not to be completely ruled out of this
