  "ONE TO JUMP"

Analysis & Selections by

Ò rØøk

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

"ONE TO JUMP '04" - A selections of horses we believe are worth following during the national hunt season.

HURDLERS - JUVENILES

CHOCKDEE [FR]
b, g. King´s Theatre - Chagrin d´Amour
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Paul F Nicholls
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Chockdee is a three-year-old by King´s Theatre, out of a Last Tycoon mare, who was bought at this year´s Goffs France Summer Sale, having shown useful form without winning at up to 10f on the Flat. He has reportedly schooled well, and hopefully he can find some opportunities this winter.

DÓMART [POL]
gr, g. Baby Bid - Dominet [POL]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--[Mieczyslaw Melnicki in Poland]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Dómart is a three-year-old by Baby Bid, out of a mare by Dixieland, who was trained by Mieczyslaw Melnicki in Poland, and won five times, including the Nagroda Rùlera - LR [Kat. A] and Nagroda Strzegomia [Specjalna - [Kat. B] both over 1600metres in May and the Nagroda Iwna [Przychówku] LR [Kat. A] over 2200metres in June. He was rated 80,5, in comparison to the 85 given to the highest rated three-year-old Jóung Islander and older horse Tùlipá, [as of 27.10.03], and was one of the horses I´d short-listed as a possible purchase at the recent Polturf Horses-in-training sale at Sluzewiec racecourse. He is a nice individual, who should do well over hurdles this winter.

DONALD [POL]
b, c. Enjoy Plan - Dahira [POL]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mark Pitman
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Donald in a three-year-old by Enjoy Plan out of a Dakota mare, who has joined Mark Pitman´s yard having won two of his nine starts in Poland, when trained by Dorata Kaluba. However his best effort were probably in defeat. He was second in the Nagroda DORIS DAY [Specijalna] - [Kat. B] over 2000m to Darab, before coming fourth to Jóung Islander in the Nagroda ASCHABADA - [Kat. B] over 2200 m. Jóung Islander subsequently went on to land the Polish derby so that demonstrates that Donald does possess ability... will he translate that over here... time will tell.

EMANÏÇ [FR]
br, g. Video Rock [FR] _ Una Volta [FR]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Alan King
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Emanïç is a three-year-old gelding by Video Rock out of the mare Una Volta, which makes him a half brother to the enigmatic Japhet. There are several other winners in the family and I´d be hopeful that Emanïç joins them in the winners enclosure before the end of term.

ENGLISHTOWN [FR]
b, c. Mark Of Esteem - English Spring [U.S.A.]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [John Oxx in Ireland]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Englishtown is a three-year-old colt by Mark Of Esteem, out of a Grey Dawn II mare. Englishtown was a decent handicapper when trained by John Oxx, winning twice at Galway last September and this season at The Curragh in July, when he won a handicap off of a mark of 94. His most start saw him finish seventh to L´Ancresse in the Rathbarry Stud´s Barathea Finale Stakes [Listed Race], which reads well in light of that horses´ efforts at the Breeders Cup Meeting. He is a very recent purchase from the Tattersalls Horses-in-training sale a few weeks ago and hopefully will appear at some stage during the season... an interesting prospect.

GIULIANI
b, g. Sadlers´ Wells [U.S.A.] - Anka Germania
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- J. Howard Johnson
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Giuliani is a three-year-old by Saddlers Wells, out of the mare Anka Germania, [a daughter of Malinowski] who won 16 races in France and in U.S.A. and £600,361 including the Sword Dancer Stakes [Gr.1], Black Helen Handicap [Gr.2], New York Handicap [Gr.2], Orchid Handicap [Gr.2], Columbiana Handicap [Gr.3], Suwannee River Handicap [Gr.3], and New Jersey Turf Classic [Gr.3]. Giuliani won one race over 11f. at 3 years, as well as finishing in the frame on one other occasion. He was purchased at the Tattersalls "Horses-in-training" sale, and is a nice prospect for the Northern circuit.

INGRES
b, g. Sadler´s Wells [U.S.A.] - Blou Dan [U.S.A.]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Charlie Swan in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Ingres is a three-year-old by Sadler´s Wells, out of a mare by Damascus. He only ran three times when trained by Aiden O´Brien, wining on a ten-furlong maiden at the Curragh on his most recent start in June. He has plenty of potential which is why Charlie Swann bought him for 37,000.00 guineas at the horses-in-training sale, and it wouldn´t be the greatest surprise if he found further success over obstacles this winter.

JÓUNG ISLANDER [POL]
b, g. Tioman Island - Jóung Girl [POL]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Tom R. George
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Jóung Islander is a three-year-old by Tioman Island, out of a Valiant Heart mare, who won four of his thirteen races in Poland, the most significant being the Derby Nagroda Prezydenta Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej - G3 [The Polish Derby]. I must say I´m pleased that he has been bought to jumping... mainly as I had been trying to persuade a friend to buy him. Hopefully by winning some races, he´ll vindicate my opinion.

KARAKAR [FR]
b, c. Ashkalani - Karikata
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--[Alain De Royer-Dupré in France]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Karakar is a three-year-old colt by Ashkalani, out of a Doyoun mare, who didn´t race in France when trained by Alain Royer-Dupré. This Aga Khan "cast-off" was bought at Goffs Summer Sale and will be worth looking out for in bumpers or maiden hurdles during the winter.

KADAM
b, g. Night Shift [U.S.A.] - Kadassa
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Paul Nicholls
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Kadam is a three-year-old by Night Shift, out of the mare Kadassa, which make him a half-brother to stablemate Kadarann. Formerly owned by the Aga Khan, Kadam only raced twice in France for Alain Royer-Dupré without showing much, however he should have bags of scope for improvement in Paul Nicolls care and it wouldn´t surprise me if he proved good enough to win a hurdle race this winter.

KJETIL [U.S.A.]
b, c. King of Kings - I Wich
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Paul Nicholls
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Kjetil is a three-year-old gelding by King of Kings, who has some recent form on the flat in France. He ran seven times, winning the Prix du Pavillon at Longchamp over 2,400 m in May as well as the Prix de Pont Audemer at Deauville in July. He could be anything and it´ll be interesting to see how he progresses this winter

MADE IN JAPAN [JPN]
b, g. Barathea - Darrery
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [Mikael Magnusson]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Made in Japan is a three-year-old by Barathea, out of a Darshaan mare. He is a half-brother to high-class dual 7f juvenile winner and Group 1 placed Al Waffi; and his dam Darrery was a triple winner over 10-12f at 3-4yrs. He´s a speculative choice as he is very immature and slightly temperamental, however he has bags of scope and I like him as a national hunt prospect so much I´ll add him in case he´s bought to go jumping. Made in Japan has only won one of his ten races to date, that was ironically on his debut at Lingfield last December when despite running green, he beat Extra Gear a length, however he has runs creditably since [hence his handicap mark of 80], however he so reminds me of Le Duc, who so obviously last term was too immature/weak to finish his races and in Made in Japan I see similar traits. If nurtured this is a horse who could develop into a nice handicap hurdler as long as he given a chance to grow into his frame... I´ll be interested to see if Mikael Magnusson races him over obstacles this winter

MIOCHE D´ESTRUVAL [FR]
bl, g. Lute Antique [FR] - Charme d´Estruval [FR]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Martin C Pipe
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Mioche d´Estruval is a three-year-old by Lute Antique, out of the mare Charme d´Estruval, [a daughter of Mistigri], who won three races on the flat at three and four years, whose first foal; Kart d´Estruval was a winner over obstacles. He was purchased at the Goffs Summer Sale in July by Hubert Barbe, and is probably destined for Nicholashayne... Hopefully he´ll show some promise this winter.

MISSILE [FR]
ch, g. Gunboat Diplomacy - Elysea [FR]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--[Thierry Civel in France]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Missile is a three-year-old by Gunboat Diplomacy, out of the mare Elysea, [a daughter of Bad Conduct], who won three races over obstacles in France . He was the last entry into this list having been purchased at the recent Goffs Autumn Horses-in-training Sale having shown promise when coming second in a bumper prior to the sale. Missile has a real jumping pedigree and will be seen to good effect over obstacles at some stage this winter.

MONJOYAU [FR]
b, g. Pistolet Bleu - Ballet Dancer [FR]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Dessie Hughes in Ireland
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Monjoyau is a three-year-old by Pistolet Bleu, out of a Groom Dancer mare, who ran seven times on the flat in France, winning the Prix Paul Pousset at Angers, over 2,300m at the end of May, and was placed in each of his over six starts. He was bought at the Goffs Horses-in-Training sale by Frank Berry and goes jumping, [presumably for JP Macmanus]... definitely has the ability to win races

NOT AMUSED [U.A.E.]
ch, g. Indian Ridge - Amusing Time
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [Barry W. Hills]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Not Amused is a three-year-old by Indian Ridge, out of the mare Amusing Time, [a daughter of Sadler´s Wells] who was a high-class 10f Listed race winner in France, and is a half-sister to 5f 2yo winning Group 3 in France Ozone Layer and to Musalal, who was placed in the Dante Stakes. He ran seven times on the flat, winning once at Doncaster in March, as well as finishing in the frame on two other occasions. He has a nice confirmation and was rated 77 on the flat. He was purchased at the Tattersalls "Horses-in-training" sale, and hopefully he shows some promise this season over obstacles.

PROMOTER
ch, g. Selkirk [U.S.A.] - Poplina [U.S.A.]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- [Jeremy Noseda]
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Promoter is a three-year-old by Selkirk, out of the mare Poplina, [a daughter of Roberto], who won a race at 3 years in France, who has produced five winners. He won one race over 10f. at Newmarket, in June, as well as being placed on two others occasions. He was purchased at the Tattersalls "Horses-in-training" sale, and being rated 87, could be an interesting recruit to jumping.

SEEYAAJ
b, g. Darshaan - Subya
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Jonjo O´Neill
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»--Seeyaaj is a three-year-old by Darshaan, out of the mare Subya, who won the 1995 running of the Lupe Stakes. He is also a half-brother to dual 10-12f Listed winner Villa Carlotta. He ran five times on the turf for Alec Stewart, winning on his second start at Pontefract in July, although his form did tail off slightly afterwards. He is a recent purchase from the Horses-in-training sale and now joins Jonjo O´Neill, who should be capable of placing him to good effect during the winter.

TRAVEL [POL]
gr, g. Freedom´s Choice [U.S.A.] - Transylwania [POL]
¦¨¨the¨trainer¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Tom R. George
¦¨¨COMMENTS¨¨¦¨¨¨»-- Travel is a three-year-old by Freedom´s Choice, out of Transylwania, [a daughter of Baby Bid]. He is unusual in so far as unlike a lot of Tom George´s Polish purchase, all his form was at two, when he was trained by Maciej Janikowski. He ran five times, winning twice at Sluzewiec, on his debut in June ´02, in the Nagroda Próbna where he beat Jóung Islander, and his final start in the Nagroda NEMÁNA - [Kat. B] over 1300m, where he beat Dómart a length. He probably wouldn´t have been too far behind the best of his generation and he is a fascinating recruit to jumping, especially as he is bound to improve as he gains experience.

Success Stories

EPSOM
Saturday June 7.
KRIS KIN: Not certain to stay today's trip however there was plenty to like about the way he quickened to land the Dee Stakes at Chester on his seasonal reappearance. Sir Michael Stoute knows what it takes to win this race and the fact that they have stumped up £90,000 to supplement him has to be considered a positive.

SUMMARY
Ireland would appear to have a very strong hand here and it will not surprise me if both Alamshar and Refuse To Bend made the frame (wouldn't be at all surprised if Alamshar obliged). However as it's the Derby let's see if we can try and find something at a bigger prize particularly those who want to have an each-way bet. Whilst it's easy to see why the likes of Norse Dancer and Magistrettì might appeal, Kris Kin catches the eye, particularly after that good effort at Chester. There was a lot to like about that performance and at odds of around 10/1, should give each-way supporters a good run for their money.
That one was for you dad!!!

Success Stories

2:00 William Hill H´cap. Hurdle
A very competitive handicap hurdle with several of these having strong claims. Farmer Jack, Teaatral, Lord Brex, Aspirant Dancer, Creon, Mr. Markham, and Ideal du Bois Beury all have serious claims. Father Jack (who was probably ridden too positively last time out) is sure to go well and probably would have been my selection if Ideal du Bois Beury hadn't been in opposition. I thought he won with a bit in hand under top weight at Leicester last time out and looks very appealing off of the minimum weight.
IDEAL DU BOIS BEURY won - 10/1
