PUNCHESTOWN FESTIVAL 2000 -

PUNCHESTOWN
Saturday, 6th May 2000
2:30 Blessington Maiden Hurdle
McCracken, who made a costly error when a well supported favourite on his debut can go one better in the opener
3:00 Brannockstown Maiden Hurdle
Sparkling Star has respectable placed form in Ireland and is worthy of eachway support in the second
3:30 Carnalway Handicap Hurdle
Rahaheen Native has a decent chance of taking the 3rd, which appears to be an ultra competitive handicap hurdle
4:00 Kilcullen E.B.F. Novice Handicap Hurdle
If I Only Had Time is an eachway offering in an extremely hard handicap hurdle
4:30 Ballymore E.B.F. Beginners Chase
Twin Gale's chances of taking this may have improved because of the conditions drying up. She gets the call over Hardycomestohardy who get the eachway vote
5:00 Watch House Cross Handicap Chase
Carjune is another for whom conditions should suit, and he can be forgiven his last effort. He's my choice to take this handicap chase
5:30 Donavan I.N.H. Flat Race
Neath Native Sky has been well supported in two bumper runs, and this looks his easiest assignment so far. He gets the call

PUNCHESTOWN FESTIVAL DAY FOUR
Friday, 5th May 2000
2:40 Kildare Chilling Hunters Chase (for the Bishopscourt Cup)
Selection - Dans Belle in a very open hunter chase. Her and Polaris Flame seem to have the form in points/hunter chases to take this, and only just got the nod
Eachway Option? Master Julian
3:15 Lawlors Of Naas/Poitin Stil Handicap Chase
Selection - Donadino, he ran really well on his chasing bow, and must go close with a clear round
Eachway Option?
3:50 Shell Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
Selection - Blue Royal to frank his Champion Hurdle form
Eachway Option? Nomadic
4:25 Ellier Developments Ltd Hurdle
Selection - Kapok did run well behind Ross Moff recently and will be hard to beat
Eachway Option? Ya-Ain
5:00 David Austin Memorial Novice Handicap Chase (Grade 1)
Selection - Gingembre, the horse in form impressive at Ayr last time
Eachway Option? Montana Glen
5:30 betinternet.com Handicap Hurdle
Selection - Bobabout
Eachway Option?
6:00 Naas Traders (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race
Selection - Sigma Dotcomm
Eachway Option?

PUNCHESTOWN FESTIVAL DAY THREE
Thursday, 4th May 2000
2:10 Weatherbys Hurdle (Handicap)
Selection is Hot Shots
Eachway Option? Moscow Retreat

2:40 Quinns of Baltinglass Chase (for the La Touché Cup)
Selection is Risk of Thunder cannot be opposed
Eachway Option? The other who might surprise him is Little Len is fit for this. If they offer the 16/1 I’ve seen quoted, he’s worth a small investment

3:15 I.A.W.S. Champion Four Year Old Hurdle (Grade 1)
Selection is General Cloney who can reverse Triumph hurdle form with Regal Exit
Eachway Option? Kattegat may run better than most will expect and could go well at a large price

3:50 Swordlestown Cup Novice Chase (Grade 1)
Selection is Frozen Groom who is favoured by the weight conditions
Eachway Option? Jungli

4:25 Ballymore Properties Barretstown Gang Camp Champion Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1)
Selection is Bacchanal assuming this isn’t one race too many for him Eachway Option? Princeful, slowly but surely on the way back

5:00 Castlemartin Stud Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase (Grade 2)
Selection is
Although Foxchapel King, The Quads, and Gillan Cove look the best on paper, if you ignore his last effort Florida Light must run well, and he is a sporting eachway bet in this affair
Eachway Option? Princeful, slowly but surely on the way back

5:30 Frank Ward & Co. Solicitors Novice Chase
Selection is Storm Ten, who has been running consistently well in Ireland this term
Eachway Option? The frustrating Royal Marine

6:00 Kilkea Castle Hotel I.N.H. Flat Race
Nightmare of a race!! Selection is the newcomer Dunworely marginally over Time for a Run’s half sister Aunt Aggie Eachway Option? Surprising

PUNCHESTOWN FESTIVAL DAY TWO
2:10 Noel C.Ryan Memorial Novice Hurdle
Masalarian, who had decent form in listed company in France before going to Arthur Moore’s yard, has been running well in Handicap Company, and has a decent chance of taking this opener.

2:40 Stanley Cookers Champion Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
I’m not convinced the drop back in trip suited Youlneverwalkalone and I do think he deserves another chance in this race. Boley Lad has been running well all term and could be the eachway value in the race

3:15 Punchestown Heineken Gold Cup (Grade 1)
This doesn’t quite look up to Grade 1 standard but looks very competitive on paper. Id single out Stormyfairweather, Native Upmanship, and Commanche Court as the likeliest winner, I think they’re certainly the most progressive. All three should be worth following this season, but today I think will be Stormyfairweather’s day. Commanche Court is worthy of eachway consideration. The same may apply to Tresor de Mai who it wouldn’t surprise me if he managed to nick a placing

3:50 Emo Oil Handicap Chase (Grade 3)
Despite a strong British presence headed by Grass Island Big Matt and Ashwell Boy. I expect Sorcerer’s Drum to keep this prize at home

4:25 J.F.Dunne Insurances Handicap Hurdle
This doesn’t strike me as a great handicap hurdle, so 12-0 may not stop Young American. He, Juan Les Pins, and Creon catch my eye in this. I suggest Juan Les Pins, who ran well last time out at Wexford. Creon gets the eachway vote

5:00 Paddy Power Bookmakers Champion Flat Race (Grade 1)
Tuesday who was unlucky in running last time out at Fairyhouse gets the vote in an open bumper. Liss A Paoraigh, who won nicely last time, gets the eachway vote

5:30 Cox’s Cash & Carry Champion Hunters Chase    This is a very decent hunter chase. Sheltering, Last Option, Satchmo, Father Andy, Gunner Welburn, and Dan’s Your Man, all have respectable claims. I am very confident that Satchmo is a bit special but this may be a bit too soon for him. Avail yourself of any eachway odds offered. Sheltering is the obvious beneficiary

PUNCHESTOWN FESTIVAL DAY ONE
Tuesday 2nd May 2000
2:40 Ernst & Young Chase (For The Ladies Perpetual Cup)
Tearaway King has a narrow advantage over Buailtes And Fadas on a recent meeting between the flags. If he takes the course I can see him pressing his exposed stable mate and taking this. Dig Acre seems the logical eachway option (He won the race last year)

3:15 Bradstock Insurance Novice Chase (Grade 3)
With Go Roger Go's jumping being suspect I'd suggest a sporting wager on Caledonian Bridge, who was an impression winner on Irish National day

3:50 B.M.W. Chase (Grade 1)
Edredon Bleu is worth opposing with Get Real almost certainly likely to take him on, on ground softer than ideal, and it would appear that by default (almost certainly) that Cenkos could clinch this prize. Every aspect of the race seems to have been set up to suit him.

4:25 Murphy International Ltd Handicap Hurdle
Tryphaena, Banreme, Grecian Dart, Phariwarmer, Galeogan, Hakim De Ferbet, and Vanilla Man, are taken against the field. All of them have shown respectable hurdles form recently and should all go well. Preference is for Hakim de Ferbet (eachway) who was an easy winner last time out, and potentially is on a useful mark. 2nd Preference would be Phariwarmer

5:00 Evening Herald Champion Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
You would be surprised if Saulsolito Bay got turned over after his Cheltenham triumph. If he has recovered from that race then he should win, if he's over the top then expect Aldino to take advantage

5:30 Rohcon Construction Handicap Chase
Andrea Cova, second to Oneofourown at Fairyhouse last week, has a decent eachway chance in this perennially tricky handicap chase. She is relatively unexposed in comparison to her opponents and I’d expect her to go close. Right n Royal is offered for those looking for something of larger odds

6:00 Corporate Sport and Leisure Flat Race
World Wide Web is a tentative choice is an open finale.

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Gossamer (12/1), Proudwings (10/1), Meshaheer, Smirk, Silent Honor, Dubai Destination, Brave Burt, Cop My Gator, and Yorkshire, were winning selections for The Flatman, and The Rook at the meeting.

THE IRISH DERBY
Galileo won as expected, however Mordshi, and Pugin did us proud !!!

ROYAL ASCOT
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
