"I SPY!!" - ODDS ON SPORT - is the latest addition to the Furlong To Go portfolio. We have been considering doing this for a while, and we hope to be able to offer you opportunities to place wagers on most sports, though initially we will be concentrating on football. We hope you find this latest feature of some use

Rugby Union - Heineken Cup
Friday, 11 October 2002
Starts this weekend. We promised several weeks ago to give you our tip. That's French Champions Biarritz. 20-1 available. A strong challenge is expected from many of the French sides (Toulouse and Montferrand will go well) but we fail to see why Biarritz should be the longest priced of the three especially considering their comfortable Pool matches. As we suggested in the league Leicester look worth taking on this year and 3-1 is no value considering their home form. With the favourites worth taking on and making the market we wouldn't be swayed by any other challenger at this stage.

Rugby Union - Zurich Premiership
Thursday, 05 September 2002

As confessed last year, The Spy knows little about this game. With the Zurich Premiership kicking off last week, I was anxious to get some thoughts from contacts who follow this particular sport with some passion to pass on to my readership. The key word in my contact's thoughts were summed up in one word really "motivation". How long can Leicester continue to dominate the domestic scene (some five years or so now) without seeing a drop off in the performance or a greater concentration towards the European challenge. Leicester @ very short prices (8-15 on) are the bookmakers favourites again and to be fair that is justified. But, surely with the introduction of the play-off system it might be possible that Leicester can afford not to win the Premiership outright but win it via the play-offs if they have to where in one-off games they remain unsurpassed. This might be a key factor to weaken Leicester's motivation a level or two if this thought rests in the back of their minds. Those hard trips away from home might just result in an extra defeat or two under these circumstances which may mean the Championship will not be a one horse race.

With these thoughts in mind, I picked up that Saracens (available at 25-1 Coral) might just be worth a small interest. A talented squad with some fine individuals they got off to a winning start at Bristol. The key factor in the view of my contacts is that in terms of coaching ability they have one of the best in the business (new coach Wayne Shelford) at the helm. If, he can work the oracle then they might be able to sustain a challenge which could make their 25-1 odds seem over generous. They apparently bought heavily over the summer and the number of new signings are an indication of their new ambition. I also pass on that Sale (20-1 also with Coral) were also highly thought of as an outsider with a squeak but were rated second best to Saracens.

Recommended bet
Saracens @ 25-1 Coral.

Enjoy your weekends!

USPGA CHAMPIONSHIP (GOLF)
Tiger Wood's recent indifferent form, makes him a very unattractive favourite for the USPGA Championships. The consistency which made him so formidable last term eludes him, and whilst we can imagine another good effort Vijay Singh (20-1 Tote) appeals as a value alternative. He has a sound record in this event, and more importantly has been ultra consistent in al the major tournaments he has competed in this term

Recommendation

Vijay Singh 20-1 Tote (Each Way)

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within 1/2Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
Surbiton obliged at 16/1.

KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30
