THE ST.LEGER MEETING 2001 -

Doncaster is one of the largest and oldest boroughs in Britain. The town has a compact centre and is surrounded by various outlying neighbourhoods and rural countryside. Doncaster is world famous for its' Horse Racing, and is the venue for the final "classic"; The St Leger

DONCASTER'S  HISTORY, AND ASSOCIATION WITH HORSE RACING...

Doncaster is one of the oldest towns in England. In AD71 the Romans constructed a fort on a site close to the river Don, they called this Fort Danum. The name Doncaster is of Roman origin, "Don" is derived from the name Danum, and "Caster" is the Roman word for fort.

The Saxons followed, and Doncaster became part of the Kingdom of Northumbria. King Edwin whilst attempting to convert his Kingdom to Christianity, built the first two Christian churches of Northumbria. One occupied the site of what is now York Minster, the other was said to have been built on site of what was St Mary Magdalene's church, in the Market Place at Doncaster. King Edwin was killed at the Battle of Hatfield in 633 AD. It is said that over ten thousand were killed in the battle and resulted in a brief revival of Paganism throughout Northumbria.

Doncaster was a fashionable market town by the turn of the seventeenth century, and the Town’s fortunes were to be enhanced with the coming of the Sport of Kings. Doncaster claims to be one of the oldest centres of Horse Racing in the British Isles. Records suggest that races were being held on Town Moor, as early as 1600. The most famous race held at Doncaster and first run in 1776, is the St. Leger. Still run today, the race is the highlight of the annual September meeting, and is now the world’s oldest classic horse race. The Royal Family have had a long association with the races. Queen Anne was a frequent visitor to Town Moor, as have been most Monarch’s since. Two St. Leger winners where actually owned by King Edward VII.

THE COURSE

Doncaster is a left-handed pear-shaped track of almost two miles with a run-in of five furlongs. The course stages both flat and national hunt racing. All races this week will take place on the flat. The course suits long-striding horses, or powerful gallopers, and places the emphasis on stamina and courage.

DRAW
Depends on the prevailing conditions, but generally tends to favour low numbers on the round mile track.

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Gossamer (12/1), Proudwings (10/1), Meshaheer, Smirk, Silent Honor, Dubai Destination, Brave Burt, Cop My Gator, and Yorkshire, were winning selections for The Flatman, and The Rook at the meeting.

THE IRISH DERBY
Galileo won as expected, however Mordshi, and Pugin did us proud !!!

ROYAL ASCOT
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
