The Coop House - Netherby (near Gretna)

The Coop House (built circa 1770) stands on the bank of the River Esk, but while we were there it very nearly went floating off! Jason, Claire and I watched nervously on our first day as the rain hammered down and the water level got higher and higher. Thankfully we stayed home and dry and made merry in our very own little castle. Once again, a lovely time was had and we even ventured out on trips to nearby Gretna and Carlisle.

If you want a bit more info on Coop House, there's a page HERE. If you fancy staying in this building or any of the others available, visit the website of The Landmark Trust

1. Driving through muddy fields, we were happy to see this sign. Notice my plastic bag wellingtons!

2. The Coop House in all its glory. I quickly snapped this in the brief moment that it stopped raining.

3. The Coop House with one of its inhabitants.

4. Those plastic bags were SO not me, look at these lovely blue wellies purchased from Gretna market.

5. Jason and Claire enjoyed watching me plod through mud and sheep poop to open and close the gates.

6. Cute stove, not so cute to light. Jason quickly got the hang of it. Notice the improvised egg cup candle holders

7. Breakfast on day one - home made croissants, this stage shows them being folded.

8. And here they are! Fresh from the oven, mmmm...

9. Claire, Claire... let down your golden hair!

10. What a lovely couple they make. The pixie twins tie the knot in Gretna Green!

11. Ahhhh... The honeymoon period?

12. Traditional roles are performed, Claire gets busy with the iron, removing wax from fabric with brown paper.

13. Jason gets comfy in his chair with a magazine.

14. and Andrew the houseboy slaves away editing the photography from the day for this very website.

15. This fishy fabric was everywhere in the house. But look at it again and it looks like a spooky alien face!

16. Would you walk over this bridge? The sign was 100 years old, the dodgy bridge felt much older!

17. Wobbling in the wind, on our last morning we braved the elements and this bridge.

18. One hour before departure we walked to the other side of the river to check out how our home looked.
