10. Alfred Strutt
Alfred Strutt was the father of my paternal grandmother Ada Milton.
According to his birth certificate, Alfred Strutt was born on 12 June 1849 in St Peter, Maldon, Essex. His father was John Strutt, Mariner, and his mother was Honor Strutt, formerly Brewer.
He married Elizabeth Driscoll Hopgood in Mile End, at St Thomas in the Parish of Stepney in the County of Middlesex on 27 March 1876. Alfred Strutt was then aged 26 Bachelor, Mariner, resident at 47 Hardinge St (now Battishill Street). His father was given in the marriage certificate as John Strutt, Mariner. Elizabeth Driscoll Hopgood was aged 21 Spinster [no occupation given] of 47 Hardinge St. Her father was Thomas Hopgood, Hatter. The witnesses were William Vanloo [?], and Mary Ann Craddock.
At the time of the 1881 census they were living at 4 Monthesquieu St, West Ham, Essex:
| Name | Marr | Age | Sex | Birthplace |
| Alfred Strutt | M | 32 | M | Maldon, Essex |
| Elizabeth Strutt | M | 26 | F | London, Middlesex |
| Alfred J Strutt | 4 | M | London, Middlesex |
At the time of Ada's birth in West Ham on 18th March 1891 23 Greenville[?] Street, Plaistow, West Ham (couldn't find this address in the 1891 census because the page was damaged). Alfred's occupation was given as Dock Labourer.
According to my Dad, his mother told him that her father died on a boat at sea when she was 6 years old, ie in about 1897. There was indeed a big storm in that year off the Kent coast. And his wife was widowed by the time of the 1901 census.
