12. Frederick Chisnall Andrews

Frederick Chisnall Andrews was the father of my maternal grandfather, Joseph Charles Andrews. and also of Frederick Andrews.

According to his birth certificate, Frederick Chisnall Andrews was born on 29 June 1876 at Claydon in the Bosmere registration district of Suffolk, subdistrict of Coddenham, in the County of Suffolk. His father was Edward Charles Andrews (profession: Gentleman) and his mother was Amelia Norman Andrews, formerly Andrews (presumably a cousin). This was Edward Charles' second marriage (to one of the servants?), and presumable explains why Frederick did not inherit very much and had to move to London to find work.

Frederick, but not Amelia, was recorded with his father and family in the 1881 census as living at Grooms Farm, Hessett, Suffolk:

Name Marr Age S Birthplace
Edward C Andrews M 52 M Wenhaston, Suffolk
Caroline Andrews U 15 F Langford, Essex
Deborah Andrews U 14 F Langford, Essex
Sarah Andrews U 12 F Langford, Essex
John Andrews   9 M Claydon, Suffolk
Alice Andrews   7 F Claydon, Suffolk
Annie Andrews   6 F Claydon, Suffolk
Frederick Andrews   4 M Claydon, Suffolk
Elizabeth Wright U 20 M [sic] Lawshall, Suffolk
Kate Walleker U 17   Rougham, Suffolk

At the time of the 1901 census, he had moved to London, was lodging with a fishmonger's family, and working as a barman.

Frederick Chisnall Andrews and Madeline Charlotte Swain were married on 24 April 1904 at the Parish Church of St Edmund King and Martyr at Forest Gate in the County of Essex. According to their marriage certificate, Frederick Chisnall Andrews was aged 28 and a Stableman by profession. At the time of the marriage he was living at 54 Woodstock Road, East Ham.

When his son (my grandfather) was born in 1909, Frederick Chisnall Andrews was a motor omnibus driver. An interesting sign of progress from the horse to the motor bus.
