16. James George Milton
James George Milton was my paternal great great grandfather, father of William
Milton.
According to the International Genealogical Index, James George Milton was
christened on 25 May 1834 at Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England
James George Milton married Rebecca Haysom in
Stepney on 25 Dec 1859, Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England. According to
the marriage certificate he was 25, a cordwainer by profession, living at 6

a cordwainer.
The young family are in the 1861 census. They were living at 17 Samuel Street.
James George Milton was the head of the household, aged 27, occupation Boot
Closer, born Middlesex in what looks like Tower Ward. Rebecca his wife was 24[?},
born in London Mall [or Wall?]. They had an infant son James George, born in
St George East. They were no longer living there in 1871.
When William Milton was born on 8 December 1864, James Milton was a Journeyman
Proof Maker.
According to the 1881 census, James Milton, age 47, born in London, Middlesex,
England [a bit vague!]. His occupation was 'Boot Closer' (i.e. someone who sows
the upper part of the boot).
He was living at 13 North Street, Hackney, and had the following children at
the time of the 1881 census:
- Rebecca, age 19, born in St Georges East, Middlesex, England, occupation
Boot Machinist. Her birth certificate says that she was born on 23 January
1862. It gives her father as James George Milton (occupation Journeyman Boot
Closer) and her mother as Rebecca Milton formerly Haysom. She was the informant
and made her mark when registering the birth (i.e. she couldn't write her
name). Her address at that time was 17 Samuel Street, St George in the East.
- Henry, age 18, born in St Georges East, Middlesex, England, occupation Boot
Operator
- William [my great-granddad], age 16, born in St Georges East, Middlesex,

(i.e. still at school: at the time primary school education was compulsory
but not, as you can see above, secondary school education). According to FreeBMD

1b page 497 of the Register of Births at the Family Record Service.

So where did all these cobblers come from? See my speculation on the
origins of the Miltons.
