Miscellaneous Miltons: origins
It would be nice to think of being related to the famous poet John Milton, but the chances are against this.
There does seem to be a bit of a West Country connection, with relatives still living in the Bristol area. There is also a high concentration of Milton surnames in Somerset.
Given that my earliest Miltons were cordwainer, it's interesting to see a family of 18th century Miltons in the Wiveliscombe (Somerset) Parish Register, in particular a couple of cordwainers, William and John Milton who respectively married a Betty and a Hannah Collard on 3 August 1781 and 19 April 1786.
My Dad, though, says the Miltons originally came from Mansfield.
Who knows?
While I was searching unsuccessfully for the marriage of James Milton and Harriet in the register of St Leonard's Shoreditch, I did find a number of other Miltons who were getting married there in the early 19th century. I thought I'd record these in case they are useful to other researchers, and in case I can establish a connection to them later:
