Strutt Family in Maldon

There is evidence of Strutts living in the Maldon area for several generations, including the family of Nobel Prize winner John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh,

According to biographies of John William Strutt, the first direct ancestor of the Strutt family in this area who can be reliably traced is a John Strutt I, a corn miller, who settled in the Springfield area of Chelmsford, Essex, in around 1667, working the Springfield and Moulsham mills with his son John II. This branch of the Strutts continued as millers until around 1727, when John retired to the small Essex village of Terling. John II had, earlier in 1720, purchased the farm known as Simon Collins in Terling.

There are a couple of other seafaring Strutts from Essex mentioned in the 1881 census who might be relatives. John Strutt was an able bodied seaman on board the Brunnette in Sussex. He was 37 years old and married, and born in Brightlingsea, Essex. Frederick Strutt was a cook aboard the Daring at port in Kent. He was 27 years old and unmarried, and born in Maldon. Which is quite hopeful.

David Strutt sent me the following information over the Internet:

Samuel Strutt (born c 1790), John Strutt (born c 1793) and James Strutt (born 1803) all lived in the same street in Maldon, Essex. [So I guess there's a good chance they were brothers or at least cousins. Samuel Strutt was David's distant ancestor. In 1816 he married Lucy Spells. Their children were Lucy (born 1816), Samuel (born 1819), James (born 1821), Isaac (born 1823, and David's ancestor), William, Henry, and Mary. Isaac married Maria Handley in 1843 and produced John Gower Strutt in 1868. His son was William John Strutt. David gave me some further information which I will include when I update these genealogy pages next.

David also gave the information about John Strutt's children which I recorded on his page.

In August 2003, I visited the Essex County Record Office and looked up the parish registers for Maldon, which confirmed the information which David Strutt sent me. I have updated my Strutt family tree on genesconnected accordingly and hope to update soon.
