This is a firewall, that prevents hackers and 'worms' like MS Blast attacking your PC from the internet. It also stops viruses and 'ad ware' already on your PC from accessing the internet. Its free for non-commercial use.

AVG

Install : AVG

AVG detects and removes viruses. It can also check emails. Its free for non-commercial use.

Make sure you use it to 'update' (download new virus definitions) and scan for viruses regularly.

Ad Aware

Install : Ad Aware

Ad Aware detects and removes "ad" related virus, e.g. cookies use to spy on your websurfing. It also detects diallers and other viruses, and checks the windows registry. Its free for non-commercial use.

Make sure you use it to 'update' (download new virus definitions) and scan for viruses regularly.

Windows Update

Make sure you visit Microsoft's window's update site, and install all the critical updates.

If you haven't done this before, it may take many hours using a modem, so break up the task, and select about '5 MB' worth of updates at a time.

There are often other programs to install, e.g. Windows media player, new versions of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
