NEWS from the President – August 2006
New Fencing Master – Peter Cormack
Shortly after passing the Diploma Sabre on the 2006 Easter Course, Peter passed the written section of the Diploma examination, thus completing his Diploma and becoming a full master of the Academy. On behalf of the Committee and our members I would like to congratulate Peter on his achievement. I trust that he will continue to improve and develop his coaching ability and that the Academy can call upon his services.
Candidates for a Diploma Examination – effective 1st April 2007
Candidates for a Diploma Examination must have passed the Class Lesson Section of at least one BAF Advanced Examination before taking the Diploma Examination.
Note: Arrangements may be made with the Examination Officer to take the Advanced Class Examination immediately before the Diploma Examination starts. Success in this Examination would permit the candidate to continue on to take the Diploma Examination but failure to pass the Advanced Class would render the candidate ineligible for the Diploma Examination. In such cases the weapon for the Class Lesson must be that to be attempted for the Diploma Examination.
Examinations – External Candidates / Residential Courses – effective 1st April 2007
Candidates, who are not attending a BAF Official Residential Course, but who apply to take a coaching award examination at the end of such a course, must understand and accept the following.
The Course Officer will take into account the numbers attending the course, the potential number of examination candidates and the number of examination boards that will be required. Priority must always be given to those attending the course itself and not to external candidates.
Where the Course Officer finds it possible to allow an external candidate to be examined, the candidate must provide his/her own pupil for the Individual Section of the Examination.
External candidates will, in addition to the normal examination fee, be required to pay a day attendance fee for the day of the examination. If it proves to be impossible to offer an examination to the applicant, then these fees will be refunded.
The Course Officer must receive applications for examination as an external candidate four weeks before the commencement of the course. It may not be possible to notify the external candidate that his/her application has been successful until 72 hours before the day of the examination.
If the Course Officer is able to approve an application from an external candidate then the external candidate must arrive at the examination venue by 8.30 am on the morning of the examination.
In all cases the decision of the Course Officer, whether or not to accept external candidates, will be final.
Sponsorship for Academy Examinations - effective immediately
Examination sponsorship by either a Diploma’d Master or Maitre d’Escrime has been suspended for a trial period until the spring of 2008. During this period the SSTT will closely monitor examination successes and failures in order to determine whether the system of sponsorship should be re-introduced or suspended indefinitely. Hopefully, removing this minor obstacle will see more candidates taking our examinations.
Examinations questions – effective 1st April 2007
Issue 4 of the CD-Rom, which contains all the examination questions, documentation and procedure for examinations etc. will be available from 01/10/06 from the Course Officer Tom@etchells67.fsnet.co.uk. Examples of the most significant changes are as follows:
Advanced Class and Special Lesson questions:
The candidate must, in addition to directly answering the question and dealing with the necessary aspects of technique, extend the scope of the lesson to include at least one of the following aspects:
Competitive situations Rhythm/changes of rhythm (cadence) Timing Tactical application Distance Simple and Compound Reactions
Diploma Special Lesson questions:
The candidate must, in addition to directly answering the question and dealing with the necessary aspects of technique, extend the scope of the lesson to include at least two of the following aspects:
Competitive situations Rhythm/changes of rhythm (cadence) Timing Tactical application Distance Simple and Compound Reactions
Note: examinations questions from Issue 4 of the CD-Rom will be used on the Easter Course of 2007 and all examinations held after 01/04/07
British Fencing and the Academy
Earlier in the year I reported that we were nearing completing the process for registering our members en bloc with British Fencing. You will no doubt be aware that one of the criteria required for BFA Coaching registration is a clear and current enhanced CRB certificate. Unfortunately just at the point when we were due to mail-shot the membership we experienced considerable CRB procedural problems. My intention was to have the whole process completed by 01/09/06. However as our insurance is due for renewal during September, and as we are waiting for a response from the BFA, we are forced to delay BFA registration until late spring/summer of 2007. In the meantime the dialogue between our organisations continues to strengthen and consolidate our relationship.
