Exam Procedure

Minimum Age for taking Academy Coaching Awards

With immediate effect the minimum age for taking any British Academy of Fencing Coaching Award is 18 years of age.

Examination Procedure

There is one major change in the examination procedure for all levels of examination above Initial. The current requirement for candidates to be examined on 'Taking a Lesson' will be dropped and in its place will be a new section of the individual lesson called 'Compulsory Elements'

Immediately after the routine (warm-up) part of the individual lesson and before the special lesson(s) the candidate will be required to demonstrate his/her ability to 'give' a nominated stroke, sequence of strokes, or fencing phrase. No coaching or teaching is required here. It is quite simply a test of the candidate's ability to provide the necessary conditions, blade presentations and openings for the complete movement(s) to be correctly executed by the pupil at a reasonable speed and cadence.

The lists of Compulsory Elements that candidates may be required to give are available from the Course Officer
