Mike Joseph - Vice President
The President of the AAI, Maître Marcel-Henri Dubois opened the congress by welcoming delegates from the following academies:
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, India, USA and Sweden.
This was followed by a calculation of voting entitlement per academy
Representing our Academy were Philip Bruce and Mike Joseph
President Report (summary) - Maître Dubois reported that nothing much had changed since the 2002 Congress and there had been no major findings since the formation of the AAI in 1962. In the main it was reported that the realisation of ideas failed due to lack of funds. Maître Dubois went on to report that during his Presidency, there had been a number of communication difficulties and personality clashes. In closing Maître Dubois thanked his executive and presented them with commemorative medals
Treasurer’s Report - Maître Gérard Delavaquerie presented a comprehensive account of income and expenditure for the period 01/01/04 to 11/08/06. Whilst it was reported that the only source of income came from membership fees, it was also reported that there were a small number of academies whose fees were outstanding. The account controllers reported that whilst there had not been a detailed audit, there had been a controlled statistical evaluation of the accounts relative to the bank account and that the opening and closing balances had been verified
Vice-Presidents reports
- Maître Mike Bunke (teaching, formation, communication, information, pedagogy, diplomas, handisport) – in summary it was reported that the AAI Course of 2006 resulted in two new masters (P Howes Canada and W Green USA) and one prévôt (L Portes Brasil) It was also reported that an application for membership have been received from the National Fencing Academy of Iran.
- Maître Claude Hendrix (sporting fencing - rules, organisation, championships, statutes, procedure rules) – in summary it was reported that major difficulties had been experience due to an inaccurate database of addresses. This resulted in considerable problems concerning communication
- Maître Fionbarr Farrell (material, safety, files, history) – reported that the tragic death of Yevgen Prokopyev was fatally wounded when his opponent’s blade broke and punctured his lung. Following an investigation it was established that the death of the fencer was attributed to the sleeve being cut off the under-plastron. It was also reported that the history of AAI was being compiled though there were many gaps
- Maître Michel Collet (artistic fencing - rules, organisation, championships) – due to illness Maître Collet was unable to attend the congress and did not submit a report
Review of the Statutes – Proposal by the German Academy. Following a minor amendment to the proposal, the Congress accepted the changes to the statues. In summary, the number of Vice Presidents has been reduced to 4, with two being responsible for General Secretary and Treasurer. The President together with the 4 vice presidents will constitute an executive board and will be responsible for the management of the AAI
Problem with the certificates – intervention of Maître Paul–Claude Wackerman. A proposal was presented which required the re-evaluation of the Maître d’Armes qualification. Mike Joseph pointed out that this was a rouse and the really purpose of the proposal was to challenge the BAF’s right to issue AAI certificates to those who have passed a diploma at one or more weapons but had not completed the full diploma. After much discussion, Maître Dubois terminated the discussion by informing the congress that the AAI had no authority over the internal management of a Nation Academy nor did he wish to see the AAI intervene in what was a dispute between two Academies.
Artistic Fencing World Championships 2008 – a proposal was presented by India, though a final decision was to be made after further investigations
AAI Congress 2008 – the BAF provisional offered top host the event and advised the Congress that they would confirm their offer by Christmas
Fencing Masters World Championships & Congress 2010Championships – Italy tabled a proposal from Malta. A final decision would be made after further investigations
Election of the President – Maître Mike Bunke (Germany) was proposed by the BAF. Mike was unopposed and voted in as the new president
Election of Vice Presidents - four nominations were voted for, and the following were elected:

Maître Anthony Gillham (USA)
Maître Gérard Delavaquerie (France)
Maître Roberta Giussani (Italy)
The being no other business, Maître Marcel-Henri Dubois thanked everyone for their contribution and attendance and closed the Congress
