Sunday 27 September 2009, at Sunbury CC, Lower Hampton Road, Sunbury, Surrey - Lost by 3 wickets (Ref. 200930)
It was a tale of two tons on a sunny Sunday in Sunbury as an unbeaten 104 from Paul Edwards won the home side the match after Wealdstone Corinthians skipper Andy Naylor had helped the visitors post a decent total with his maiden century. Despite a duck the previous day he had no hesitation in taking first use of a good pitch on a warm afternoon, and with useful support from Nick Cundy (whom he ran out) and Malcolm Horwill the Corinthians total mounted at a steady rate to 72-2 from 23 overs. In the second half of the innings the scoring rate doubled as Naylor took inspiration from being reminded by Phil Cundy that the last diminutive wicket-keeper to run out a Cundy went on to score exactly 100 (Steve Hunt at Ardington in 1993). His second fifty was much more fluent, taking only 38 balls, and Steve Stratford contributed well to a 4th wicket partnership of 93. In the last 5 overs before the declaration a superb cameo from Dharmik Shah saw 46 runs added, half of them in the last over. Sunbury lost both openers for 0 to Steve Brown, but Edwards barely gave a chance before hitting the winning runs with 3 overs to spare. He featured in two big partnerships with a hard-hitting 45 from Winston Veerender and an aerial 41 from skipper Mike Serpant, whose scoring may have been curtailed earlier had a difficult chance at gully been held. He was bowled by the delivery of the day from Steve Brown, which broke the bail, and Corinthians fought to the end by taking three more wickets but ultimately the pitch, and Edwards, were too good.
Corinthians 215-7 dec (46 overs), A Naylor 100 (130 balls), D Shah 35* (16 balls), S Stratford 34 (51 balls)
Both openers got off the mark with a single in the first over, then Nick Cundy turned Harsha for two 2s and Naylor cut the first boundary of the day off Mumford.
Sunbury Squires 216-7 (39.2 overs), S Brown 3-31, D Shah 2-45, G Morley 1-49, P Cundy 1-50, P Edwards 104*
