Club Information It is well known that the game of bowls was played in Ireland in the 17th century but the modern game originated around 1862. The year in which the Belfast Bowling Club was founded and for 30 years remained the only Bowling Club in Ireland and was situated in Nelson Street. Records show that in 1902 the Vice President of the Club, Mr . J. C .Hunter played against the famous Dr. W. G. Grace in London and initiated negotiations with him for International Matches. Subsequent meetings which also included A.M.Hamilton (Scotland) and W.A.Morgan (Wales) resulted in the first International match being played in London the following year. After several moves the Belfast Bowling Club has finally come to Deramore Park. The green and all the facilities are superb. The Inaugural meeting of the Ladies Section was held on 18th April 1961. Their first match was played against Shaftesbury Ladies on 8th May 1961. The Ladies of Belfast Bowling Club became affiliated to the N.I.W.P.G.L. on its foundation in 1967. |
