Welcome to the Scopes Family Web Site. The photograph above shows my paternal grandmother, Ellen Elizabeth Scopes, with her husband Arthur James Grist and 7 of their children, taken 1918 in Ipswich, Suffolk. It was Ellen who first instilled in me a love of family history, thus planting the seed of establishing my roots. I started researching her family in 1983 - initially quite easy but then I hit a 'brick wall' which led me to follow all Scopes lines I came across. This in turn introduced me to another researching the family, Eric Gowing-Scopes, and we subsequently joined forces for a while, swapping all information. My grateful thanks also goes to another descendent, Peter Turvey, for his contributions. |

Having accummulated so much information I registered the name with the Guild of One-Name Studies in 1985. The name Scopes has been in Suffolk since the 16th century, often mis-spelt as Skopes, Scope, Skope, Scoops - as yet I have found no link to the large 'Scope' family in Yorkshire. |
