VISIT to ALDON AUTOMOTIVE
Brierly Hill, Oct 2008

This visit was organised by Dennis Wharf for the MGCC Midget register and friends, and represented a good opportunity for some of us with KMidgets to verify the ECU calibration and, most important of all, come away with some figures to boast about in the pub. On the day, we had 4 KMidgets, one more modified than expected A-series Midget (Roly's), 2 Frogeyes (one IOW), an MGA, and Minis from Hilltop Mini club, Malvern. First a pic of the KMidget owners  (in case you thought this was all about the cars) - me, Will Munns, John Hoptroff and Tim Dalton:

You can see pics of the cars elsewhere on this site - let's cut to the dyno sheets - first BRB - looks like I've turned BRB into a torque monster with 165 lb-ft on tap:
:
BRB chart

:We used the same procedure for all the Emerald equipped K's:
With this method, BRB's torque went from 155 to 165 lb-ft and power from 136 to 142 bhp. The new map has +8% more fuel and +2 degress more timing above 5K rpm.

Now we have Tim's - his 1.8K has uprated head, 285 deg cams and PTP manifold; most significantly, we found 40% more torque in the mid-range, and 10 more peak bhp to following curve with a  nice 180 bhp headline. Here's what heppened in each run (WOT) to give you an idea of the process, made very simple with the Emerald:

RMV chart

Now we have Will's 1.6K: 124 bhp and ~130lb-ft is spot on  for a std engine on Rover ECU (no adjustements made, obviously):

KEH chart

Next we have John's 1.6K - with suspected cam timing problem:

JVK chart

The 2 curves are a result of std then -2 degree power runs. We'd like to see John's engine running properly not least so we can compare std ECU vs Emerald on same road.

Here's an idea of what the cars can do away  from the rolling road:

KMIDGET KEH
KMIDGET RMV
MIDGET EKA (Roly's unexpectedly tuned 1275: 76 bhp and 96 lb-ft)
MIDGET STD (I used the quoted 65 bhp/72 lb-ft figures; really they were ~8% less; this explains why the std car is a little quicker than expected)
KMIDGET VWV (had to add Russ' KMonster in here: 209 bhp and 155 lb-ft)
