THE floating bridge was once painted by

L S Lowry. In my research into Lowry I wanted a photo of the floating bridge, to my shock it appears that the local historians have failed to grasp the web as a tool. So here we are. Until someone does any thing better!Lowry spent some time in Southampton. Did he paint any more seascapes or city scenes?
I What I need now is pictures, posters, postcards any age (any quality-please e-mail or post me a post card ! ),details of books (titles & publishers) If you can get a photo to me I can scan it and deliver it back the same day. any stories, recollections.! "FLOATING BRIDGE 1956"
( THERE IS ANOTHER ONE OWNED BY SOUTHAMPTON GALLERY JUST BEFORE IT LANDS WITH THE PEOPLE CRAMMED. ON)
1836 - 1977 The Floating bridge was a (pair of) chain ferry built across the River Itchen. (Woolston to Southampton). All the people from the east of the city used it to get to work. My Mum used to cycle about 6 miles and cross the Itchen on this ferry to go to work at the gas board!

These photos date to around 1904. and appears to show people in their sunday best. .... Does any one know if there were two ferries from the start?

I remember going over the floating bridge in the MK II Cortina estate about 1970, I also remember going to my first Tom Robinson gig at Floaters night club (this is what happened to one of them ) just before the club got burned down it must have been about 1979-1980.
