The Disco Biscuits are one of BoA's main 'discoveries' over the
past couple of years.
Bisco Lives is a 'Fan Club' album, which was available from their
site for a short time last year.
I suppose what turned BoA on the Disco Biscuits was/is their
modern interpretation of what David has termed 'In A Tent' music.
(Basically a form of music that could also be termed as 'Audio
candy' - More to make your mind dance than your actual physical
body) - 'In A Tent' well our earliest experiences of this musical
form took place 'in a tent' (A large Marquee really) at the
infamous Stone Henge festivals of the early 80's - Bands like
Tandoy / Here and Now / David's very own Chemical Alice and the
still surviving Ozrics Tentacles.
Most of this album consists of a large (40-min) jam building form
a joyous hypnotic; almost Hendrixesque plucked guitar figure to
funky trance-fusion. Most of the time you just find yourself
relaxing into the groove of the whole thing but there is just so
much going on within this band.
Relax from the
groove - study closely and you will hear influences ranging from
the afore mentioned Hendrix - Pink Floyd - The Doors - Gong -
Hawkwind and of course this being a jam band - The Dead and Phish.
Combine this psychedelic fusion with the hypnotic beats of the
Club Dance Scene (but, no computers here!) and you have the
bastard child which is The Disco Biscuits.
To date The Disco Biscuits have released three (including this)
self financed albums. As per all good Jam bands, the best of
their work occurs during the unrepeatable heights obtained in
their abstract live jamming. Unfortunately, in some ways, the
band are constantly progressing and are still to reach their full
potential on CD.
Recorded live 31/12/99 in hometown Philadelphia, Bisco Lives, as
all Disco Biscuits music, provides a uplifting aural high. The
Jam is one of their better ones I have heard (Others via freely
available MP3's)
The last track on the album is a teaser of studio work in
progress and yes it's a new progression from the live recording.
I'm convinced that a killer studio album is just waiting to
happen - When it does watch out!
