WILLIAM AMBROSE BAILEY William Ambrose Bailey (senior) was baptised on 19 April 1829 in Moulsham, near Chelmsford Essex. His father was Henry Bailey, a labourer and his mother Mary née Hodges. They appear to have had at least six other children as I have found baptism references for: Sarah Ann (24 February 1828);Fanny (1832); Henry (1834); Charles (1836) ; John (1837) and Thomas (1841). Henry Bailey had been born c 1807 in Chelmsford, the son of William Bailey and Sarah née Ambrose who had married on 10 September 1801 in Chelmsford. Mary Hodges was the daughter of William Hodges and Mary and was born c 1806. Henry Bailey married Mary Hodges on 9 September 1827. On the 1841 census for Widford Essex the family are living in Chalk's buildings - an area or set of dwellings inhabited primarily by agricultural labourers with most families numbering around ten persons. William Ambrose Bailey married Eliza Borham the daughter of James Borham, gamekeeper, at the church of St John Chelmsford on 25 December 1849 ( a Christmas wedding!). William was only 20 years old and his wife probably 21 - she was 'of full age'. Neither were literate and they 'made their mark' on the marriage register as did their witnesses, one of whom was William's sister, Fanny. William and Eliza christened their son, William Ambrose Bailey (junior) at Widford Essex on 19January 1851. William Ambrose Bailey (junior) married Harriett Morris on 4th July 1871 at St John's church, Hampton Wick, Middlesex. On his marriage certificate he is described as a labourer - at the time of his marriage he was literate enough to sign his own name, but his wife was not. Harriett Morris was the daughter of Henry Morris, a waterman, and Harriett née Jobson, and she was born at Seething Wells, Kingston on 24 March 1851. Her father Henry Morris had been a lighterman at the time of his marriage ( a man who was involved in transporting cargo on the River Thames, as opposed to passengers as a waterman.) He had married Harriett Jobson at Hampton Wick on 29 July 1850. In 1881 William Ambrose Bailey (junior) and his wife were living at 13 Musjid Road, Battersea and William was working as a railway porter. It was at this address that their son William Charles Bailey was born on 20 April 1882. In 1891, the family are living in Wandsworth, West Battersea. They have six children at home. Harriett age 18 years; Ellen, age 14; Elizabeth, age 11; William age 8; Charles, age 6 and Frederick, age 3 years old. WILLIAM CHARLES BAILEY William Charles Bailey was working as a journeyman baker, and living at 9 Manor Road, Park Lane Tottenham when he married Winifred Ethel Smith on 7 September 1902. He was actually still a minor, aged 20 years but gave his age as 21 when the marriage was registered. Winifred his wife was only 17 years old. When he married he gave his father's occupation as a railway shunterman.
Winifred Ethel Smith was born in Tottenham, Middlesex in 1885. Her mother was Rachael neé Davies and her father was Augustin(e) Smith, a carpenter/joiner. Winifred was one of nine children of Rachel and Augustin: the eldest child of the family was Benjamin William Smith, born 26 March 1874; then Augustin (junior) born c1876; Richard, born c 1877; Annie S. Smith, born c1879; (Winifred Ethel - 1885);Francis R Smith, born c 1888; Nellie born c 1889; William Joseph, born c 1892 and the youngest, John Elliot Smith being an adopted child. The family were living at 197 Park Lane Tottenham for most if not all her time at home. She left at age 17 to marry William Charles Bailey, a baker, aged 21 years who lived nearby. They married on 17th September 1902 at the Roman Catholic church of St Francis de Sales, Tottenham. The couple had several children including Winifred Ethel who married William Earle Lock.
Rachael Davies was born in Magor, Monmouthshire (Caerleon, Newport) on 4th July 1854. Her father was Benjamin Davies, a husbandman at the time of her birth, and her mother was Ann (née Jones). Rachael married Augustin(e) Smith on 24th May 1873 when she was 18 years old. She was illiterate at the time of her marriage. Rachael bore at least eight children over the next 20 years: Benjamin William Smith born on 26th March 1874 in Christchurch, (Caerleon, Newport) Augustin Smith born in 1876, in Christchurch (Caerleon) Richard Smith born in 1877, in Christchurch (Caerleon) Annie S. Smith born in 1879, in Christchurch (Caerleon) Winifred Ethel Smith born in 1885 in Tottenham Francis R Smith born in 1888 in Tottenham Nellie Smith born in 1889 in Tottenham William Joseph Smith born in 1892 in Tottenham John Elliott Smith (adopted) born in 1898 In 1881 the family such as it was then are recorded in the census at 15 Lowfield Road, Hampstead but their stay there may have been shortlived as there are no children recorded as being born there and in 1901 they are in Tottenham.. Augustin Smith was born on 27 August 1846 ,Under the Bank in the parish of St Augustine, Bristol. His father was William Smith, a cabinet maker who registered his birth on 4th September 1846. His mother was Eliza neé Frost. He married Rachel Davies on 24th May 1873 at the Register Office in Newport where she ‘made her mark’ and Augustin signed his name before two witnesses, Mary Hill and Martha Ann Jones. The couple raised nine children, one adopted, in Wales and later in London where both are still living in 1901. The address in 1901 is 197 Park Lane, Tottenham. Augustine is working as a carpenter/joiner and seven of their children are still living at home.: Benjamin aged 29 working as a Grocer's shop assistant; Francis aged 13 and William aged 9 - probably still at school, Annie aged 21, a domestic servant; Winifred aged 16 and Nellie aged 12 - neither working and John Elliott Smith aged 3 ( adopted). |
