Notes
1. The newly
built suburb of Varosha was largely uninhabited at the time of the Turkish
invasion but would have housed 40,000 Greek Cypriots
2. The
1973 census data is not a reliable source for determining the number of
Greek Cypriot refugees since a) the Turkish invasion prevented the data
from being verified in 1974 and b) Greek Cypriots that normally lived in
the north who were either overseas or studying or working in the south on
the day that the census was carried out were not included in the population
figures for the occupied areas therefore a projection has been made since
they are now refugees.
3. The
2004 House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee report on Cyprus claims
that 50,000 Turkish Cypriots were displaced from the free areas after the
Turkish invasion thus by subtraction 60,000 Turkish Cypriots resided in the
occupied areas
4. Lobby
for Cyprus estimate. The Cyprus government estimates the figure at 116,000.
5.

6. Refugees
residing in Cyprus plus refugees residing abroad.
7. Greek
Cypriot Refugees who left Cyprus after the Turkish invasion and their
decedents.
