Transit of Venus 8th June 2004...

On the 8th June 2004, most of the European continent was treated to a transit of Venus, not seen last since 1882.

Venus transits occur when the planet Venus passes between the Sun and the Earth so we see Venus move in front of the solar disk. These images were taken with a variety of instruments from Norfolk, UK. The images page will be updated as further images are processed, please come back regularly to check.

Venus is clearly seen against the Sun's disk to the lower right. The picture was taken with a Starlight Express MX716 CCD camera with a 210mm telephoto lens (plus 2x converter) and a Baader solar filter which only allows 'white light' through, all other radiation is blocked. Time : 10:28 GMT.

The disk of Venus can be clearly seen creeping across the surface of the Sun. Solar faculae can be seen on the solar surface. Taken with a Phillips Toucam through a 12" Meade LX200 and an H-Alpha solar filter. Time : 11:04 GMT.

Just after 3rd contact and the transit is almost over. Taken with a Phillips Toucam through a 12" Meade LX200 and an H-Alpha solar filter. Time : 11:39 GMT.
