Wildlife
and Bird watching
Birds
found locally include:
Capercaillie, breed in our
local woods. With luck we can usually show you a lecking site -
in April and early May
Scottish Crossbill, in the
tops of Scots Pines, looking rather like parrots!.
Crested Tits. Usually seen
on any local walk, and certainly breeding in the forest behind
the hotel.
Osprey,
Watch them fishing in the Spey or local lochs, or even in nearby
fish farms!
Slovenian Grebes on at least two local
lochs. .
The list is huge, Black
and Red Throated Divers,
Red Kite,
Sea Eagles,
Golden Eagles,
Buzzards and
other raptors may be seen. Kingfishers
have been seen locally, and there are huge flocks of Pinkfooted and Greylag Geese
and Oystercatchers in the
winter. We look down onto the Abernethy
Forest, home to the famous RSPB
reserve at Loch Garten
where Osprey breed each
year. The mountains are home to Ptarmigan,
Dotterel and Snow Bunting.
200 Acres of mature pine forest (not plantation!) are on our back
doorstep, and early morning walkers are usually richly rewarded.
Animals of Interest
Red Squirrels, and Roe Deer in Curr Wood behind the
hotel.
Mountain Hare, Reindeer and Red
Deer in the mountains.
Pine Marten and Otters have been seen.
Bottle Nosed Dolphins on
the Moray Firth.
Highland
Wildlife Park
See Badgers, Arctic Foxes, Scottish Wildcats, Owls,
