BURNINGHAM

BURNINGHAM was the family surname of one of my wife’s maternal great grandmothers who married a COLVERD cousin in 1854.

There was a large occurrence of families of this name in the parishes in the north of Hampshire most of which trace back to SIR RICHARD BERMINGHAM, 9th Lord Athenry of Ireland who died in 1580. It is understood that he descended from the Norman DE PERCY knights.

I have carried out a lot of research without much success in trying to trace back my wife’s BURNINGHAM ancestors. In so doing, however, I have collected extensive data from parish records and census returns in Hampshire, Middlesex and London.

My wife’s great grandmother was a daughter of BENJAMIN BURNINGHAM. His death certificate says BENJAMIN GEORGE but all other references just say BENJAMIN. In fact BENJAMIN was a very common name for BURNINGHAM children in Hampshire.

I cannot trace the birth or baptism of my wife’s BENJAMIN BURNINGHAM (1793?/1838). He was married at St Leonard, Shoreditch in 1812 to a COLVERD. He then moved to Ponders End, Enfield, Middlesex where he was a dyer in a silk crape factory up unto the time of his death.

There was another BENJAMIN BURNINGHAM (1776?/1852), a shoemaker living in St Leonard parish, Shoreditch and the records show a connection. The age difference would seem to be too small for him to have been the father. The 1851 census shows this BENJAMIN as having been born in Hampshire but with no parish recorded. I believe he may have been the BENJAMIN christened on 29 November 1776 at Odiham, the son of JOHN BURNINGHAM

I am seeking help on establishing links between the two BENJAMINS.
