This was the family surname of my wife’s paternal grandmother.
My wife’s ancestors trace back to GEORGE who married THOMASIN BATSFORD in 1676 at Great Hallingbury, Essex. Most Sapsford families trace back to that part of Essex or to the neighbouring part of Hertfordshire near Bishops Stortford.
The family line started by GEORGE and THOMASIN continued at Great Hallingbury through THOMAS (1677/----), ABRAHAM (1716/1792), RICHARD (1740/1813) and to WILLIAM (1776/1853) who after thirteen years service in the Royal Marines settled in Stepney, London as did also his son JONATHAN HARRIS SAPSFORD (1833/1916).
I have much information on this particular SAPSFORD family and various references to other families of that name. A copy of the family tree has been lodged with the Society of Genealogists.
