SHUTE was the family surname of one of my paternal great grandmothers.
There are several SHUTE family lines in Devon tracing back before the start of Parish registers. In the early years, the name was also recorded as SHUTT and other variants but by the 19th century, it was mostly standardised as SHUTE. Surviving parts of the 1641 Protestation Return give a fairly good coverage of Devon parishes and record 64 entries of the name SHUTE or a variation thereof in 40 parishes all over Devon.
My ancestors came from the farming country inland from Totnes around the parishes of Diptford, Ugborough, South Brent, Modbury and North Huish. They trace back to FRANCIS (----/1779) of South Brent and later of Ugborough who was married at Diptford in 1729 to ANN SMYTH. It continues through ANDREW (1741/1797) and ELIZABETH TREMLETT of Totnes and then through FRANCIS (1771/1854) and JANE BROCK of Okehampton and Totnes. One of their children, FRANCIS (1807/1872), moved to London and was the father of my great grandmother.
I have extensive records of this and other SHUTE lines in Devon.
