My interest in the SQUIRE name arises through DEWNES SQUIRE (1681/----) who was married at Witheridge, Devon in 1704 to JUSTINIAN DOWNEY. She was the daughter of JOHN SQUIRE who was married at Witheridge in 1679 to ANNE MOORE.
JOHN SQUIRE is believed to have been christened at Chittlehampton, Devon in 1656, the son of RICHARD SQUIRE who was married in that parish in 1652 to DUNES STRIBLYN.
I have not yet traced this line back any further. I have a collection of early Devon references to the name but with a cut-off point of 1750.
