STRIDE was the family surname of one of my wife’s paternal great grandmothers who married HENRY THOMAS PHILLIPS in 1854 at Millbrook, Hampshire. Although nationally STRIDE is not a very common name, it is a long established Hampshire surname particularly in the area north of Southampton. Most references trace back to Hampshire.
My wife’s great grandmother was JANE STRIDE baptised in 1834 at Millbrook. She was the daughter of JOHN and HANNAH. According to census returns, JOHN was born about 1792 in the neighbouring parish of Eling. The STRIDES at Eling are traceable back to the start of the parish registers but there are so many of them with different family lines and not much originality in choice of first names that it is difficult to put together the various families. I have three possible matching baptisms for JOHN and I have been unable to determine which is the correct one.
My research has concentrated on the Millbrook and Eling parish registers and censuses. I have extensive records therefrom.
