WIL(L)COX & WIL(L)COCKS

I have found that the spelling of this name was not consistent within the families I have researched. I use the spelling WILCOCKS below but actual records vary between WILCOX, WILLCOX, WILCOCKS and WILLCOCKS.

My interest in the name arises from a brother and sister BURGESS who married a sister and brother WILCOCKS at Witheridge, Devon. WILLIAM BURGESS married ELIZABETH WILCOCKS in 1781 and THOMAS WILCOCKS married MARY BURGESS in 1785. THOMAS and MARY were the parents of MARY WILCOCKS (1791/1864) who in 1817 gained notoriety for the PRINCESS CARABOO HOAX.

The WILCOCKS families at Witheridge lead back to the children of a JOHN and MARY christened there in the 1680s and 1690s. JOHN and MARY were buried at Witheridge in 1732/33. JOHN was born in 1656 at Cruwys Morchard, Devon and the line there traces back to a HENRY WILCOCKS (1593/1670).

I have extensive records of WILCOCKS references in Devon.
