Before we start let me just tell you a little about myself and the reason why i found myself visiting Ascension. I am an Airframe Technician in the Royal Air Force and in 1997 i was working on a section called the "Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Flight(AR+TF)",better known as "Crash and Smash." The main role of the AR+TF is to recover and transport aircraft which are incapable of flying.This includes damaged aircraft,crashed aircraft,museum aircraft etc.

In June97 an RAF Tornado F3 was transiting back from the Falkland Islands to the U/K when it suffered a rear end fire.The pilot had to make an emergency landing at Ascension. The aircraft was assessed and the decision was made to transport the aircraft back to the U/K for repairs.
