| Introduction. |
|
Not only is the island very remote but is also extremely small, only 35 square miles.Island supplies are brought in by cargo ship and it is linked to the U/K by regular flights out of RAF Brize Norton. The RAF use the island as a mid point between the U/K and the Falkland Islands.

WHATS THE WEATHER LIKE?
As the Island is close to the Equator the temperature on the Island is pretty much the same all year round. The winter temps average around 78f/26c and the summer temps average 86f/30c.During the winter belts of high pressure may cause overcast skies, but even then the suns rays are still very strong. It is very easy to get sunburnt here so exposure times should be kept to a minimum. It is not uncomman to see cloud building up around Green Mountain and stetching out over Travellers Hill.It doesn`t stretch much beyond here normally and by the time you get to the beach you are outside its cover and in the sun.
WHATS THE LANDSCAPE LIKE?
| The bulk of the landscape is dominated by the 44 volcanic peaks that are spread over the island. In between the peaks the ground is dry and barren and covered with ancient dried lava flows and volcanic rock and stone. |
| In total contrast to the rest of the landscape,in the middle of the island is Green Mountain. As the name suggests it is very green indeed.Half way up is a working farm and the Governers Residence.Climb some more and you travel through what appears to be a rain forest full of bamboo, banana trees, eucaltptus and other vegetation. You then reach Ascensions highest point, some 2817ft above sea level. |
