Northgate Cup - prelim round
The Talbot and Cross Foxes played out an excellent cup game tonight at
the United Services Club, with the lead changing hands no less than five
times throughout the match. Cross Foxes eventually won the close
encounter of the bagatelle kind by 4 points, 425 - 429. In the other
semi-final at the Talbot, the Union Vaults beat St. Werburgh's Club.
St. W's only had 5 players and conceded the match early in the second half.
At half time the score was 213-242 in favour of the Union Vaults.
League update: Last night the Spital Vaults had their first win against the
Union Vaults - Well Done to them!!! and the City Arms won away at the
Stanley Arms. Also, John Lea is out of hospital and attended the
Talbot v Cross Foxes match this evening, good news indeed!

Winter league - week 5
In tonight's top-of-the-table clash, the United Services had a solid
home win against St. Werburgh's Club and were 104 points ahead at half time,
eventually winning 511 - 415. This moves the USC into first place.
Cross Foxes move into second place with a good away win at Blacon SSC.
The Talbot move up to fourth after a good win over St. Theresa's. At
half-time the scores were 311-211 and St. Theresa's were unable to close the
gap in the second half. I don't know the results of the other
two games as yet. Rather than phone round for the scores, I had
a quick dash down to the Countess to see John Lea who was taken ill
yesterday and has been kept in overnight while some tests are carried out.
I am sure we all wish him well.

Winter league - week 4
St. Werburgh's retained top spot this evening with a solid win over the
Talbot by 96 points, 600 - 504, although the Talbot were boosted by Mandy
Tonge making her debut and scoring an excellent 45 her first stick!
The United Services stay second with a home win against the Stanley, 459 -
306. The Cross Foxes beat the Spital Vaults to go third and the Union
Vaults had a fine away win at St. Theresa's club and move into 4th place.
Blacon SSC did not have a team and there was therefore no game at the City
Arms this evening.
Royal Oak
Popped in for a few sticks after the match tonight, and the Royal Oak has
acquired, quite simply, the best table I have ever seen. I would
urge everyone to go in and have a look, you will not be disappointed!
9th November 2009
Royal Oak in Hoole have a new table!!!
The Royal Oak in Faulkener Street Hoole have installed a new bagatelle
table today! I have a bit of a cold otherwise I'd be down there having
a game, instead I'm trying to blast it through my system. It sounds
like it's a good one, can't wait to have a stick on it!
4th November 2009
Winter league - week 3
St. Werburgh's Club moved one point clear at the top tonight with a
solid away win at the Talbot. The only time the Talbot were ahead was
after Chris Barlow scored 92 on first, but St. Werburgh's pulled it
back to lead by 45 at half time. The United Services moved into second
place with a good away win at the Stanley by 100 points. Cross Foxes
won away at the Spital and go into joint third place with St. Theresa's Club
and the Talbot, with St. Theresa's also coming unstuck at
the Union Vaults who recorded their first win of the season. After
their opening game defeat by 2 points, Blacon SSC recorded their first win with a
home victory against the City Arms.

Winter League - week 2
St. Theresa's Club continued their solid start to the season with a
comfortable home win over fellow newcomers Spital Vaults. The Talbot
had a convincing away win at the Stanley, winning by 80 points to go joint
top. There was only 4 points in the St. Werburgh's Club v Union Vaults
game at half time, but the home team played very well in the second half
with three 80+ scores to eventually win by 34 points, 575-541.
City Arms had the most impressive win of the night, beating last seasons
league champions the Cross Foxes by 3 points at home. The game between the
United Services and Blacon SSC has been re-arranged and will be played at a
future date.

Winter League - week 1
The 2009/10 Winter League is under way at last, and there were some
close encounters of the bagatelle kind on the opening night.
Newcomers St. Theresa's got off to a flying start with a narrow away victory
at fellow newbies the Spital Vaults, eventually winning by 5 points.
We're very pleased to have both teams in the league, best of luck to them!
The margin was even narrower at Blacon Sports & Social Club, where the
United Services let a commanding half-time lead of 84 slip to eventually
hang on and win by just 2 points.
As if that wasn't close enough, the Union Vaults entertained St. Werburgh's
Club in front of a packed audience, and the result was even closer.
At the end of a keenly contested game, a recount confirmed that both
teams had accrued exactly the same number of points, a rare draw!
Last seasons champions Cross Foxes had a shaky start, but staged an
excellent second half recovery to eventually win. They came back
from being 35 down at half-time to beat the City Arms by 45 points.
The Talbot had a walkover as the Stanley could not raise a team for the
opening fixture. Let's hope they have better luck next week!

Change to Winter League fixtures
Have found out today that the Egerton Arms will not have enough players to
put a team into the league this season but they hope to be back next year.
This is balanced by St. Theresa's Club request to join the league, so they
will take the Egerton Arms place. Amended fixture sheets have
been distributed.

to all pubs together with a signing-on sheet.
Could all club secretaries
return their completed signing-on sheets by 31st October please, as draws for the various
competitions will take place at the next Committee Meeting on

Re-Introduction of Fees
One important change for the forthcoming season is the
re-introduction of fees for each bagatelle club. For the past few
years there have been no fees levied for entry to the bagatelle league, but
this cannot continue indefinitely, and at the AGM, it was unanimously agreed
that each club should pay £40 to cover entry to the League, West Cheshire
Shield, Northgate Cup and 5-a-Side competitions. In addition, a
separate entry fee of £1 for singles and £2 for doubles will also be
introduced. Fees will be due by Christmas and bills will be
sent once entries to singles and doubles are known.
There will be free entry into the 2010 Open Knockout Competition next year
for clubs in the league or venues who have recently acquired new tables.

Open Knockout - semi-final
The second stage of the knockout was held this evening at a packed Spital
Vaults. There was some excellent sticks of bagatelle played early on,
and six of the eventual qualifiers were amongst the first seven to play.
The eight qualifiers are Richard Evans (79), Frank Whitley and Mitch Whitley
(both 77), Dave Cooper (76), Ted Randles (74), Mike Turner (72), Nigel
Walker (70) and Barry Pace (63). Several players were just a few
points behind Barry Pace which made a it very competitive and entertaining evenings bagatelle
throughout.
Once the 8 qualifiers were known,
a draw was made from all the neutral tables available, and the
Talbot was drawn out of the hat. The final will therefore be played on
Wednesday, 23rd September at 8.30pm at the Talbot. See
Knockout page
for details.
Thanks go to Leanne and Angie
from the Spital for hosting this evenings event and also for the excellent
food, especially the hotpot which disappeared in double quick time. It
really was much appreciated by all, Thank You! The Spital Vaults are
putting a team in the Winter League so, if you would like to play for them,
please let them know.
