Winter league - week 14
The ever-improving Cottage recorded a tremendous away win at leaders the Home Guard tonight. At half-time the scores were 234-273 and at full-time 476-498. Top scorer was Adam Pickett with 83, but the whole team played consistently well throughout the match and at the end last man Dave House required just 14 to secure a memorable victory. Well done to the whole Cottage team!   Third placed United Services had a comfortable away win at the Egerton, half-time scores were 188-267, full-time 387-534.

The Talbot recorded a home win against St. Theresa's to stay in 4th place, half-time scores were 254-195, full time 498-416.  Top scorers were Paul McLaughlin with 87 for the Talbot and Dave Dumpleton with 82 for St. Theresa's.   In the closest game of the night, the Union Vaults recorded an excellent away win at the Spital Vaults, and I understand there was just 1 point in it. Final scores 466-467.   Bawn Lodge completed the double over the Royal Oak, final scores 429-370.    St. Werburgh's had their second bye this week and did not play.

Winter league - week 13
The Home Guard Club were away at the Cottage tonight and won to stay top of the league.   Fourth placed Talbot played away at St. Theresa's Club and the half-time scores were 212-274.   The Talbot increased the lead slightly in the second half, final scores 462-537.  Top scorer was Mick Tite with 96.  The fixture between the Spital Vaults and the Union Vaults was reversed, and the two teams met at the Union Vaults where the home team had a convincing win.   The Royal Oak entertained local rivals Bawn Lodge and the away team came out on top to take 3 points.    St. Werburgh's Club have their bye this week and next and did not play.

The game between the United Services and the Egerton was postponed because of a special birthday celebration in the Egerton, and I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Amanda a very Happy Birthday.

25th January 2012
Winter league - week 12
Third placed United Services Club entertained leaders the Home Guard Club this evening, and at half-time the scores were dead level, 220-220.  The Home Guard edged ahead in the second half, however, and eventually won the game by 45 points. Final scores 421-466.    Second placed St. Werburgh's Club had a very narrow win at the Royal Oak, eventually sneaking home by just 3 points, FT scores 438-441 (I think!).

Fourth placed Talbot played the Cottage and led at half-time 283-222.  They increased the lead to exactly 100 points in the second half, final scores 521-421. Top scorer was Les Harris with 81.    The Spital Vaults played the Egerton Arms and ran out winners 475-378.  Top scorer was Jim Gahan with 81.  I don't have the result of St. Theresa's Club v Bawn Lodge, and the Union Vaults had their second bye this week.

19th January 2012
5-a-Side competition - Quarter Finals
The Talbot played the Home Guard Club at the Spital Vaults, and as they say "got off to a bad start and then fell away".  The dog were outscored throughout the match and eventually lost 283 - 375, an average of 75 a man by the Home Guard!    The United Services Club played the Royal Oak at the Union Vaults and won the match 322 - 213.    The Spital Vaults had a walkover against St. Theresa's Club at Bawn Lodge and are now through to the semi-finals of all three cup competitions.

18th January 2012
Winter league - week 11
Leaders the Home Guard suffered their first defeat this evening as the United Services Club came from behind to register a fine away win.  In a close game, the Home Guard were 8 up at half-time but the Services rallied second half to win the game by 14 points. Top scorers were Mal Coppock with 84 for the Home Guard and Oscar Vickers with 81 for the USC.   The Services remain in 3rd place but are now only 5 points behind the leaders with 2 games in hand.    Second placed St. Werburgh's Club closed the gap at the top to 3 points with a home win against the Royal Oak.

The Talbot move up to 4th after a solid win at the Cottage. Half-time scores were 224-299 and full-time 408-491.   The Spital Vaults had a good away win at the Egerton Arms by 60 points.  Top scorers were Jim Gahan for the Spital with 77 and Paul McAleer for the Egerton with 70.     Bawn Lodge had a home win against St. Theresa's Club, HT scores 196 - 136, FT scores 370 - 319 with the top scorer being Bawn Lodge's S. Pike with 70, and the Union Vaults have their byes this week and next.

12th January 2012
West Cheshire Shield - Quarter Finals
The United Services Club played Bawn Lodge at St. Theresa's Club, and in a close game which ebbed and flowed the Services eventually came out on top by 20 points.    St. Werburgh's Club played the Royal Oak at the Home Guard Club and the final scores were 437 - 389 in favour of St. Werburgh's.   Top scorers were Chris Barlow with 83 for the Royal Oak, and Nigel Walker and Max Lomax for St. Werburgh's with 72 and 71 respectively.

The Talbot played the Spital Vaults at the Royal Oak and led at half-time 253 - 215.   The Spital turned the tables in the second half however, and some excellent scoring saw them come out on top with last man Ronnie Williams sealing the win in his second stick.  Final scores 454 - 465 to the Spital.  Top scorers were Paul McLaughlin with 85 for the Talbot and Dale Williams with 80 for the Spital.

11th January 2012
Winter league - week 10
The Royal Oak turned the form book upside down this evening and were 2 ahead at half-time at league leaders the Home Guard Club, HT 208 - 210.   The Home Guard rallied in the second half however, and ran out comfortable winners in the end, final scores 484 - 418.   Second placed St. Werburgh's Club had a closer-than-the-final-score-suggests game with Bawn Lodge, and a major factor in the home side winning was a magnificent 104 (51+53) scored by second man Ray Lamb. Half-time 263 - 257, full-time 560 - 471.

The Spital Vaults were pushed hard in their home game with the Cottage who seem to be improving every week.  The Cottage were ahead for most of the match and led after 6 men by approx 30 points.   After 7 men the Spital just edged into the lead by 5 points and then last man Dale Williams scored 85 to ensure a home win.    The Egerton Arms entertained St. Theresa's Club and the away side moved up to 5th place ahead of the Talbot by winning on a difficult table, full time scores 288 - 338.     The Union Vaults could not raise a team this evening and their game with the Talbot was therefore cancelled, and the United Services Club had their second bye this week.

5th January 2012
Northgate Cup - Quarter Finals
The Cottage hosted the only game played this evening, between St. Werburgh's Club and the Talbot.  The Talbot won the toss, chose to bat, and at half-time led by 254-198.  The dog pulled further ahead in the second half, and when last man Les Harris increased the lead to more than 108, St. Werburgh's did not use their 8th man.  Final scores 463 - 304.

The United Services and Spital Vaults turned up at the Talbot and Union Vaults respectively but their opponents could not raise teams and both have therefore progressed to the semi-finals with the Home Guard Club and the Talbot.

Union Vaults Cup Games
The Union Vaults cannot raise a team for Thursday night games at present, and have therefore conceded their games with the Home Guard Club (Northgate Cup [5 Jan] and West Cheshire Shield [12 Jan]), and their 5-a-side game against St. Werburgh's Club (19th Jan).

4th January 2012
Winter league - week 9
Leaders the Home Guard had a good away win at the Royal Oak.   I understand they were 14 up at half-time, but pulled away in the second half to win 437 - 547.   Top scorer was Home Guard captain Barry Tipton with 98.   St. Werburgh's Club moved into second place above the USC with an away win at Bawn Lodge. The scores were close at half-time with St. Werburgh's pulling ahead in the second half.   The Talbot had a solid home win against the Union Vaults.   They were 302 - 215 up at half-time and eventually won 557 - 375.

The Cottage had a good home win against the Spital Vaults.   They got off to a great start with the first two men and led at half-time 248 - 203.   They increased their lead in the second half and ran out winners 461 - 357.   Top score for the Cottage was Adam Pickett with 79.   The Egerton Arms could not raise a team to play at St. Theresa's Club and have conceded the game to them.   The United Services Club have their bye this week and next and did not play this evening.

Request to re-arrange game - United Services Club v Egerton Arms
The Egerton Arms are asking the United Services Club if they will re-arrange the game due to be played on Wednesday, 1st February at the USC owing to a special birthday party which the whole of the Egerton team will be attending.

31st December 2011
Arthur Morris RIP

It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of former League Secretary Arthur Morris on New Years Eve.   As well as helping to run the league for many years, Arthur was also a keen player and played for many years at the old Liver Hotel on Brook St, the Talbot in Newtown and latterly the United Services Club.   On behalf of everyone connected with bagatelle, I wish to convey our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

14th December 2011
Re-arranged game - result
Tonight's re-arranged game between the Union Vaults and the Home Guard Club was a game of two halves.  After a close first half the Vaults were just ahead 178 - 176.   The Home Guard stepped up a gear after half-time though, and eventually ran out comfortable winners 274 - 407 to go 3 points clear at the top of the table.

8th December 2011
Doubles Preliminary Round - result
There was just one game in the prelim round tonight, and at Bawn Lodge Ted Randles and Dave Cooper (77 + 66 = 143) beat Phil and Chris Barlow (39 + 47 = 86) to progress to the first round proper.  It was a case of good and bad sticks for Phil and Chris which cost them the game. Ted played first and scored 29+48, Phil replied with 3+36, Dave then scored 30+36 and Chris got 7+40.

Committee Meeting
The next Committee Meeting is on Monday 12th December at the Talbot, ko 8pm.

7th December 2011
Winter league - week 8
The Home Guard Club put in a great performance at the Spital Vaults to lead at half-time 213-318 and then go on to win the game 449-580.  Top scorers were John Lea and John Ford with 97 and 94 respectively, and the win takes the Home Guard top of the league.    The United Services Club had a solid home win against the Cottage, they were 257-159 up at half-time with the final scores being 494-324, and there was a 'green field' for both sides!   St. Werburgh's Club had a good home win against St. Theresa's Club to stay 3rd, and the Union Vaults had a home win against the Royal Oak to stay 4th.     Bawn Lodge could not raise a team tonight, and their home game with the Talbot was postponed, new date TBA.   The Egerton Arms had their second bye tonight, and did not play.

Re-arranged league game
The Union Vaults have re-arranged their postponed game with the Home Guard Club, they play them at the Union Vaults next Wednesday, 14th December.

1st December 2011
Singles Competition - Preliminary round
There were just two games in the preliminary round tonight at the Union Vaults, in what proved - for whatever reason - to be quite a low scoring evening.   In the first game, Billy Williams won the toss, went on, and scored 9+25=34.   In reply, Mike Turner, who had been hammering the table in practise, scored 4+27=31.    In the second game, Craig Lamb won the toss, went on and scored 22+3=25.   Ted Randles went on and scored 29 off 4 balls to win the tie.   After the games, I was asked how I would describe the performances on the website, and I said "probably two 0-0 draws", which is a little unkind to the players, but for some reason, apart from Ted, it was extremely hard to score on the Union Vaults tonight.    The net result is that Billy Williams and Ted Randles both progress to the First Round Proper of the singles.

30th November 2011
Winter league - week 7
The United Services Club won away at the Cottage tonight to move a point clear at the top of the table.  I don't have actual scores, but understand the Services were approx 40 up at half-time, the Cottage fought back to be only 6 behind after 6 men, but the Services pulled away again to win by 71 points.   The Home Guard Club had a home victory against the Spital Vaults in a low-ish scoring match, 454 - 422.

St. Werburgh's Club won away at St. Theresa's Club to stay 3rd.  The Union Vaults had a good away win at the Royal Oak, by approx 40 points, scores were approx 439 - 479 and the Vaults move up to 4th.
Bawn Lodge were unlucky not to win at the Talbot, the only time they were behind was when the last man came off.   Half-time scores were 205 - 248, full time 480 - 478 and the Talbot move on to 9 points and 5th place.  The Egerton Arms have their byes this week and next and do not play again before the New Year.

26th November 2011
Cross Foxes have new table!
The Cross Foxes have re-introduced a bagatelle table back into the pub!   The table from the Home Guard Club was installed this morning by a hard-working team of dedicated bagatellers, some of whom lifted the table onto and off the van, and others who turned up slightly late (sorry lads!).    See the link to Twitter on the Home page for a picture of the newly installed table being tested.

24th November 2011
5-a-side - Preliminary round results
Last season's 5-a-side champions the Talbot overcame an early deficit to the Cottage at the United Services Club to eventually win through 285-209.   The Royal Oak recorded their first win of the season against the Egerton at St. Werburgh's Club, winning the game 185-208.   St. Werburgh's Club overcame Bawn Lodge at the Home Guard Club, final scores 335-228.

23rd November 2011
Winter league - week 6
League leaders the Home Guard's game at the Union Vaults was postponed because the Vaults were missing some players.   The United Services Club had an excellent away win at St. Werburgh's Club, final scores were 509 - 552 in favour of the Services.  Highest scorers on the night were John Clarke (85) for St. Werburgh's and Ray Potbury (85) and Sam Mackin (84) for the United Services who now go joint top with the Home Guard, but having played a game more.

St. Theresa's had another excellent win over the Royal Oak in a very tight game, winning by just by 4 points in the end.   Bawn Lodge recorded their highest home score of the season against the Spital Vaults, final scores 408-392.   The Egerton recorded their first win of the season with a good win against the Cottage.  I understand the Cottage's last man was set a target of 90 to win, which is a big ask on any table.

17th November 2011
West Cheshire Shield results
The Union Vaults just pipped St. Theresa's Club at the Cottage, and Bawn Lodge beat the Egerton at the Talbot.   The United Services are also through as the Cottage could not raise a full team due to pool commitments.

16th November 2011
Winter league - week 5
The Home Guard Club were hounded by the Union Vaults early on, but a dogged display saw them record their best home score of the season, 516, to win the game and maintain their 100% record.   Previous joint leaders St. Werburgh's Club had a tough away game at the United Services Club.   At half-time the scores were 200-179, and they eventually lost 433-385.

St. Theresa's Club move up to 6th place with an excellent away win at the Royal Oak.   They were 15 up at half-time and carried on to record their first away win.   The Spital Vaults entertained Bawn Lodge and were approx 20 up at half-time before pulling away and winning by around 120.  The Cottage in Brook St played local rivals the Egerton Arms and had a convincing home win, final scores were approx 450-333. Congratulations to the Cottage on their first win and an excellent score.  The Talbot have their bye this week and next.

West Cheshire Shield news
The Cottage have conceded their game to the United Services Club due to pool commitments, and the USC are therefore through to the next round.

12th November 2011
Happy Birthday
The website is nine years old today.

10th November 2011
Jim Fairhurst - RIP
It is with deep regret that I have to report the passing of Jim Fairhurst in the early hours of this morning.   Jim was an excellent player who I first remember playing for the Axe Tavern in Watergate Street.   Later he played for many years at the Spital Vaults, then moved with the team to the Cross Foxes, the Lock Vaults and latterly the Home Guard Club.   Jim was a very popular player who will be sadly missed, and on behalf of everyone I wish to convey our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Northgate Cup - Preliminary round result
The Talbot played the Royal Oak at a packed Spital Vaults this evening, with pool, dominos and bagatelle all being played on the same night!   The Talbot shot into a commanding early lead with the first two men scoring 82 and 93, and they led by 69 after 2 men.   The Royal Oak fought back however, and by the end of the game the deficit had been reduced to 31, final scores 465-434 in favour of the Talbot.   Thanks go to Dale and the staff at the Spital for their hospitality on a very busy night, and the half-time buffet which was excellent!

9th November 2011
Winter league - week 4
Joint leaders the Home Guard Club and St. Werburgh's Club both had good home wins this evening, the Home Guard Club overcoming Bawn Lodge by approx 430 - 360, and St. Werburgh's Club beating the Cottage 560 - 420.   The Talbot found themselves 64 up at half-time at home to the United Services, 276 - 212, but this week the second half managed to hold on, and even increase the lead by 1 point, final scores 514 - 449.  The Union Vaults completed the double over the Cottage with a good home win, and the Spital Vaults avenged last weeks defeat by beating St. Theresa's Club at home, they led by 60 at half-time 220-160, and the full-time scores were 468-334.

Northgate Cup News
The Cottage cannot raise a team for tomorrow night's game at the Royal Oak versus the Home Guard Club, and have therefore conceded the game, putting the Home Guard Club into the next round.

The Egerton Arms cannot raise a team to play St. Werburgh's Club at St. Theresa's Club and have also conceded the game, St. Werburgh's Club also go through to the next round.

8th November 2011
Stanley table has new owner
I understand the Stanley table has been sold to Adam from Bawn Lodge, so congratulations to him for becoming the owner of a bagatelle table, let's hope it's up and running soon!

2nd November 2011
Winter league - week 3
The dark nights (or possibly Halloween...?) seem to have had an impact on events tonight, with three of the games producing lower than expected scoring.   In the "match of the day" between two of the early joint leaders, the United Services came out on top in their home game against the Talbot on a difficult table.   It was a classic game of two halves, with the Talbot 52 points up at half time (179 - 231) before succumbing in the second half and eventually losing by 44 points, final scores 409 - 365.   The Home Guard Club had a good away win at Bawn Lodge, with the home team in particular struggling to master the table, final scores 280-440.

In yet another low scoring game, St. Werburgh's Club had a good away win at the Egerton Arms, winning by approx 40 points to stay joint top with the Home Guard.    In the closest game of the night, the Cottage were narrowly beaten at home by the Union Vaults by only 19 points.  The Cottage's first win can't be far away!     In the game where the fixture was reversed, St. Theresa's Club playing at home first took full advantage by beating the Spital Vaults by approx 100 points.   The Royal Oak have their bye this week and next.

28th October 2011
Stanley Arms changing hands - table available for sale
There's change afoot at the Stanley.  Tony Carss is handing the reins over and apparently the new landlord does not want the bagatelle table which Tony therefore wishes to sell.   It seems inflation has hit Brook Street as the asking price is a whopping £500.  Anyone interested should contact Tony.

May I also remind potential table buyers that the Home Guard table is also currently For Sale for £300, anyone interested should contact Barry Tipton.

26th October 2011
Winter league - week 2
St. Werburgh's Club had a good home win against newcomers the Cottage, 600 - 415 the final scores.  However, the Cottage should be happy averaging over 50 a player in their first ever away game!   The Talbot had a home win against the Egerton Arms, final scores 474 - 357.   The United Services Club won away at the Royal Oak after trailing at half-time, final scores 500 - 540.    The Home Guard club had a good away win at St. Theresa's Club.   Bawn Lodge reversed last week's result against the Union Vaults, and now join them on 2 points.

Spital Vaults v St. Theresa's Club
Will players of both sides please note that the fixtures have been reversed due to a clash with ladies darts, and St. Theresa's Club will now be at HOME on the 2nd November, and away on the 9th.

24th October 2011
Cup Draws
Draws for the Preliminary Round of all competitions were made this evening at the Committee Meeting.   See Cups page for details.

This season the Away Average competition will be based on 8 out of 10 away games.

19th October 2011
Winter league - week 1
The Winter League got under way this evening with St. Theresa's and St. Werburgh's back in and the Cottage and the Home Guard Club both making their debut.   It was a baptism of fire for the Cottage in the local derby with St. Werburgh's Club.  Opening pair John Clarke and John Kenyon scored 81 and 87 respectively to give St. Werburgh's a lead they never lost. Final scores 342-510 to St. Werburgh's.

The Talbot also got off to a flying start away at the Egerton, with opening pair Paul McLaughlin and Mick Tite scoring 88 and 67, final scores 338-457.   The Home Guard Club made their debut this evening with a home win against St. Theresa's Club, final scores (I think) were 470 - 440.  The Union Vaults got off to a good start with a home win against Bawn Lodge, and the United Services Club beat the Royal Oak.

16th October 2011

Winter League - General info
The league will start on 19th October, fixtures are being done at present and will be out shortly.

The fees for the 2011/12 Winter League remain the same as last year at £40 per team, and this covers entry into the League, West Cheshire Shield and Northgate Cup, and also the 5-a-side competition.    It will be assumed all teams will enter all competitions unless they opt-out.

Please look out for entry forms to the Singles and Doubles competitions which will be distributed to each pub/club in the near future.  There is an additional fee of £1 per player for entry into the Singles, and £2 per pair for entry into the Doubles.

The format for the League, West Cheshire Shield and Northgate Cup is that they are 8-a-side competitions, but if a team only has 6 players available, then the two lowest scorers are allowed to play again, in the same order that they have already played.    If a team has 7 players available, then the lowest scorer can play again.

In the 5-a-side competition, a minimum of four players are required, and the lowest scorer can play again, if required.

League games should start at 8.30pm, and the away team should be allowed a minimum of 15 minutes clear practice time on the table before the game.     Cup games, Singles and Doubles, are always played on neutral tables.

If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

The next Committee Meeting will be in the Talbot on Monday, 24th October when draws will be done for the various cup competitions.
