Hi Len, Enjoyed your site. Would like to ask a question. I have recently retired and now have a little spare time to
get back into music. 30 - 40 years ago I played a little guitar and tenor banjo. I would like to take up the 5-string banjo.
Have never "picked" before and would like to know how difficult it is to learn (especially at 62 years old). Since I don't
have a 5-string banjo, what would you recommend (used / new). At least until I determine that I will stick with it, I'd like to keep
it under $500. Do you know of any instructional books that are good?
Thanks, Woody

Hello Banjo Bill
My wife Sheila (upright bass, fiddle, clog dance in traditional Ozark Mountain style) and myself, Bob Everhart (12-string acoustic guitar, harmonica, vocals) are planning a tour to Europe, with dates in your area probably the last two weeks of October, first week of November, if we can find some. We like to work with a banjo player doing music in the style of Bill & Charlie Monroe (before Flatt & Scruggs); Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams Sr; Uncle Dave Macon; Woody Guthrie, etc etc. Have lots of credibility and credentials: I am President of the NTCMA who sponsors the National Old Time Music Festival now in it's 26th year in Avoca, Iowa (Aug 27-Sept 2, 2001). Produced and hosted the national PBS television show "Old Time Country Music" for 7 years, likewise the "Old Time Music Hour" syndicate

Am in the market for a good, American made banjo. Would like to hold the price to around $1000 or less.
Am leaning toward the Deering Sierra but am open to suggestions as well as names of reputable discount dealers.
Don't know if, at 62 years old, I can learn but have always wanted to try. Played a little tenor banjo in my teens
with a Ludwig Ambassador that my grandfather gave me. But, the 5-string is different..for sure. Of course, each dealer
thinks his brand is best. The local dealer is pushing Fender. I am totally confused. Can you help? Tnx, Woody

The story of your son Martyn is very sad.
I symathise with you. I am also a banjo fanatic but more old timey stuff frailing etc. I get a lot of stick but I stick with it. I started when I was 11 years old when my dad got an old tenor banjo out of the loft and started to play it. I was fascinated. I actually then learned the guitar because in 1959 what else? But I always had this hankering after playing the banjo and eventually bought one in 1988. After loads of trades in etc I have now got a Deering Boston which I play without the resonator on and a Deering Goodtime from which I removed the frets and put an ebony fretless fingerboard on, and on which I have nylon strings to simulate old time gut.all the best Mike.

Hi...as a relative newcomer to playing the banjo, thought I'd seek out some other bluegrass players who would be willing to share their knowledge! If there's anyone local to West Yorkshire, who'd be interested in getting together (at a basic level!) I'd really like to hear from you...or maybe I could sit in with a group who could point me in the right direction?

G'day Bill/Len,greetings from OZ.
Nice site you have here.I'm a 50 tear old novice Uilleann Piper who is always on the lookout for new tunes.Whats the situation with your tune list? Can I e-mail you with a request for the GIF/Dots for a particular tune, or will they be available directly from your site when you get around to it?
I also play a bit of flute, whistle, guitar(in the DADGAD tuning)and I also have an octave mandolin.I love the sound of these instruments and I love Irish Trad.and I'm putting most of my energies into the pipes.I have a similar musical background to you(elecricity guitars etc.)It's funny how a lot of people seem to gravitate to this REAL music as they age!
Anyway....must go.....all the best......Charlie

I also enjoy Barney McKenna, Mick Maloney, and Davey Arthur(who I know!). I play in two bands, Driscoll and Smith, and Thorns and Roses. Click on this, to see me and Jack Driscoll. I am the banjo player. This picture was taken in Tommy Makems Irish Pavillion, in NY in 1998. It was a great club, but, alas, it is no longer there.http://www.east-durham.org/memfest/index.htm . if clicking doesn't work, just search the web with that address. Geez! Banjo jokes I hadn't heard! (Well, one, anyway).
Here's a link to some banjo (and bass) jokes we shouldn't have had the tape running for. Some are actually different! I'm not saying that any are, well, actually funny... http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1502/1502590.html
If you've never been to Mp3.com, they'll ask you to "join" with your email address. The resulting spam isn't bad. And you might have some fun there finding new folk and bluegrass offerings.

trad. & originals ranging from gypsy to celtic, blewgrass
to berber. I grew up partly in Lincs - "'tis my delight on a

record (er, disc) out independently that we sell at shows
and which gets the odd play on the CBC etc. We're pretty
