Sketchbook - This Page includes watercolour sketches, photos, tips and tricks and a painters diary of sorts documenting what I get up to when I get the chance to go out painting in the Peak District. Hope you enjoy Scot

A day out painting in March
Outside StudioStudio for the day. A sunny but cold day in early March. Despite finding a sheltered position by a dry stone wall the cold was still biting. After sitting painting for a couple of  hours I couldn't hold my brush straight for shivering.

Watercolour Sketch, Dove Valley. When I started this sketch the mist was heavy in the valleys beneath  the peaks and seemed to have the consistency of cotton wool but after about an hour it had dissipated, considerably altering the character of the scene. Changeable light and weather conditions are among the most demanding challenges that the outdoor painter will face. Landscape Photo 1Photo of Dove Valley scene. Digital cameras can be a useful tool for the artist. If you don't get the opportunity to finish your painting they are great for recording the scene and using back in the studio to finish the picture. Also excellent for noting changeable light and weather conditions.

Hartington Barns Tips for outdoor sketching- simplify.
  • Simplify your painting by eliminating excessive and unnecessary detail. If part of the scene doesn't look good or you don't think it will add to the scene then leave it out.
  • Limit your colour palette to as few colours as possible.
  • Chose a simple uncomplicated scene with a single focal point.

Books and Resources for Landscape Painting
My favourite books on Landscape painting are the David Bellamy's series on watercolour landscape painting (published by Collins, see books section for more info.). Bellamy presents a simplified but effective approach to what is often seen as a daunting medium to work with. The books provides all the information on materials (including brushes paper types etc.) that a beginner will need to get started. The Series offers a structured and practical approach to Landscape painting outdoors as well as in the Studio and can be found in most large book shops as well as at Amazon.

Leisure Painter magazine also provides excellent features and demonstrations by popular Landscape artists. American Artist and Watercolour (An American Artist Publication) are also superb magazines but tend to be pricey if bought outside the US. Borders book shops often carries both of these magazines.
