Wanted

Brass and Basses

More basses, trumpeters, trombonists and a bassoon player are needed for the coming season of the Tonbridge Philharmonic Society, now in rehearsal.

Robin Morrish, music director of the Phil, said: "The exciting and attractive programme for the 2008-09 season includes music by Gounod, Vaughan Williams, Bach and Handel's Messiah.

We need a bassoon player, some trombones and trumpets for the orchestra and a few singers for the bass section of the choir."

The Philharmonic gives five concerts annually in Tonbridge, plus Traditional Family Carols in December.

Accomplished musicians of all ages are invited to contact Robin on 01732 352613

THE NEW SEASON 2008-9

The new 2008 - 2009 season is one of great variety, ranging from the familiar to the unexpected.

November's concert celebrates the birth of St Cecilia, patron saint of music, and gives thanks and praise for the inestimable gift of music itself.

The main work, Messe Solenelle de Sainte Cecile, by the French composer, Charles Gounod, leads naturally to the orchestral concert in February, which is also devoted to the French musical scene in works by Berlioz and Bizet.

Handel's ever popular and universally loved Messiah returns to the Philharmonic's repertoire in March and the summer programme welcomes another great French work, Saint-Saëns' Organ Symphony, together with widely contrasted choral works from across the European and British traditions.

The season ends with an orchestral concert in which we welcome as soloist Hannah Balcombe, daughter of long-standing members of the Philharmonic Society, in Weber's Bassoon Concerto.
