The Osteopathic Centre for Children and the Royal Society of Medicine's Forum on Maternity and the Newborn co-host Conference at the Kings Fund Centre

As part of the Osteopathic Centre for Children's 15th Anniversary, in conjunction with the Royal Society of Medicine's Forum on Maternity and the Newborn, a conference on the osteopathic care of mothers and newborns will be held at the Kings Fund Centre in Central London on Friday May 5th, 2006.

The conference will be chaired by Sir Cyril Chantler, Chairman of the Kings Fund and until recently Chairman of the Great Ormond Street Hospital, and by Gillian Fletcher, former President of the National Childbirth Trust. It is entitled "Osteopathy - its application in neonatal and maternity care".

Programme

“The Forum on Maternity and the Newborn held a well received meeting on complementary therapies other than osteopathy in 2001, and being open to the search for the evidence basis of complementary medicine is pleased to be running a joint conference with the OCC now. This will be an opportunity for those working with children and parents to develop a deeper understanding of osteopathy and its integration into healthcare.” Dr. Elvidina N Adamson-Macedo, University of Wolverhampton, President, RSM Forum on Maternity and the Newborn.

This collaboration is a first for the OCC, and it is especially welcome in the light of the extensive work done by the charity over the last 15 years in developing a paediatric osteopathy response to the healthcare needs of babies and children. In particular, the conference also recognises the work done over the last 10 years by the OCC at the neonatal intensive care unit of Barnet General Hospital.

"This collaboration reflects a greater recognition of the role that paediatric osteopathy plays in the support and maintenance of the health of the newborn and her mother, whether there is an acute or chronic health crisis, or whether there is minor correction needed after birth to ensure the optimum health of both baby and mother." Stuart Korth, Consultant Paediatric Osteopath and Director of Services, OCC

The OCC is a registered charity and was set up 15 years ago with four main aims: 1) To provide treatment for all babies and children, regardless of the family's ability to pay 2) To train postgraduate osteopaths in paediatric applications 3) To raise public awareness of the benefits of paediatric osteopathy for babies and children 4) To research into the effectiveness of paediatric osteopathy

The Forum on Maternity and the Newborn of the Royal Society of Medicine was set up in 1982 to present and discuss issues at the forefront of pregnancy, birth, and care of the newborn. A multidisciplinary group, it brings together people who are striving to find ways of approaching common problems.

Further details of the conference are available from the OCC, or at www. occ.uk.com, and tickets for the event, priced £100.00, are available from Amanjit Gill at the OCC.
