Right in the middle of Tarragona, virtually surrounded by blocks of flats, are the remains of the Roman town of Tarraco.
This Roman town formed the starting point for the Roman conquest of the Iberian peninsula. At that time there were three provinces in the peninsula and Tarraconensis was the largest of them, this town being its capital.
