Mao is the capital of Menorca and is known for the invention of mayonnaise and the manufacture of gin. During the 1700's it was a British naval base. Mao (also known as Mahon) has one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, and it is possible to go on trips round the harbour in special glass-bottomed boats.

In Mao there are some nice old buildings including one that now contains a fruit and vegetable market. Many herbs grown in Menorca can be bought here. There is also a gin distillery down by the harbour which is open to visitors at certain times, and samples of gin and various liqueurs are available. The name of this distillery is Xoriguer. When staying in Es Castell near Mao in 1998 we also went to a very good concert of church organ music in a church called Santa Maria de Mao.
