La Yeguada de la Cartuja - Hierro del Bocado is where the Cartujano Andalucian horses are bred. Owned by the Spanish State Heritage department (Patrimonio del Estado). We were told that 400 horses presently live on the stud. Located in the country outside Jerez, not far from the monastery of the Carthusian monks who used to own the horses.
The premises of the Yeguada are equipped with the most modern veterinary facilities as well as a large glass-walled exhibition building where equestrian displays are put on for visitors. It is entrancing to see the foals, yearlings and two-year-olds being herded by the 'gauchos', there is also a magnificent display of mares, stallions, horse-riding and carriage driving.
This photo shows a group of yearlings, the horses that are born black usually become lighter as they age. All the Cartujano horses are very good natured, even the stallions.

This photo shows a group of mares, held together by the neck collars, and not attached to the riders by any rein. The mares are extremely well-trained to follow the riders and are alike as "peas in a pod".

This photo shows the entrance to the yeguada, and some of the numerous international visitors.
