Shows have been functioning since the 1840s and they encouraged the development of new breeds and the establishment of standards in Britain, the USA and other countries. They provide an excellent ``stage'' on which the skill and devotion of breeders can be seen and rewarded. In addition, there is the encouragement of a rather special hobby, which is fascinating as well as useful—even bantams produce eggs for the table, thus paying for their keep. This book traces the history of the shows and the personalities involved. The enthusiasts who started it all—writing the first standards, organizing the shows, establishing the Poultry Club, appointing judges, and other essentials all had to be dealt with. There is now a background against which advice can be given. Matters such as breeding, the type of stock, the requirements for utility or exhibition, preparing the birds, training them, spotting the faults and other relevant aspects are all covered. The author has made a special study of the key features for individual breeds and gives these with appropriate explanations. This book is different from any other book on the subject because past winners are shown and their merits or faults are shown clearly, thus enabling the fancier to improve on stock. There are separate chapters to deal with shape, tails, legs and so on. The show preparation is also explained, thus emphasizing the need to turn out top class birds. |
