Lands End to John O’Groats Cycle Ride

DAY 1 Saturday 9th September

Lands End to Pendoggett

THE DAYS REPORT

The day started at 9.00 am in a drizzly, damp but warm Sennen. Not a particularly cheery start to the epic journey.

The First & Last Inn                          A Cornish Field!

Following advice from their overnight host and a photo session at 'The First & Last in England Inn', they missed out some of the minor roads planned in favour of the more direct A30 making good time  through Penzance and Halye traveling on to Camborne before cutting back to the planned route between St Allan and Fiddlers Green thereby avoiding Turo.

                                         Bill & Phil looking pleased

By this time the weather had improved enormously and the riders were enjoying basking in sunshine with wall to wall blue skies. Being quick to respond to the improvements in the weather they found a pub in Newlyn East where cornish pasties were enjoyed by all for lunch.

                    ESTUARY                                        ON THE ROAD

Cycling out of town they encountered two cowboys on horseback complete with stetsons, holstered revolvers and rifles. Chris, not to miss an opportunity swiftly asked  whether the American icon David Lambs was know to either. Drawing a blank they rode on.

Stopping at St. Columb Major at the c. 16 century Glebe House, a Tea & Coffee House for tea and teacakes. (Who said this was going to be one long picnic?). The 3  were made exceedingly welcome by their hosts Cheryl & John Andrews. Phil the charmer sweet talked Angela into providing our trio with homemade jam to top off their repast.

A quiet moment near Wadebridge              Higher Hendra - St Teath

Going down Wadebridge bypass touching 39 mph was exhilarating followed by an equally breathtaking climb they all found to be tough going between St Kew and Pendoggett.

The team safely arrived at their B & B at 6.30.

A lovely period farm house, Higher Hendra, St Teath, Bodmin was the home and working farm of  hosts Angela & Phil Roose who were very welcoming and friendly making their guests comfortable in large and spacious rooms.

On Balance an excellent day having completed the first 70 miles and their objective while not feeling  stretched. All were relieved that they had coped and managed to get the early challenging climbs behind them.

Bill managed to score the first puncture just outside St Allan.

The evening saw them down at the Cornish Arms downing pints of locally brewed Doom Ale before tacking a meal at the local fish restaurant in Pendoggett.

    To be continued...
