The Journey to Land's End

Friday 8th September

Bill, Chris and Phil arrived safely in Sennen this evening without any hitches.

The train form Liverpool to Plymouth was on time and they were lucky enough to catch an early train to Penzance enjoying good views of St Michaels Mount before arriving 2 hours earlier than expected.

Lands End                                                             Penzance

The 10 mile ride to Sennen was found to be very hard going in heavy drizzle, plenty of steep hills giving them a foretaste of tomorrows challenges.

This evening saw them at Lands End having their 'cards' stamped and Chris being mobbed by an American tourist mistaking him for David Lambs a musical hero. ( I've not heard of him. Ed)

Well - which way should we go?

 Are you sure?

The mist has not cleared and they are enjoying a meal in the 'First & Last in England' pub. - They may find it mists over again towards closing time!

Tomorrows start is scheduled for 9.00 am at Lands End.

THE PLAN!

This part of the journey should be relatively straight forward. Of course given the vagaries of the public transport it hasn’t been that easy to book the tickets, but we’re hoping the journey itself is problem free.

We all live on the Wirral so will meet up and travel down to Cornwall together.

The plan is to meet at Bill’s house in Birkenhead on Friday morning. We will then cycle the short distance to the Seacombe and catch the Mersey Ferry to Liverpool, then cycle to Lime Street station.

Our first train is the 09:13 Liverpool to Plymouth arriving 14:44. There is a train from there to Penzance few minutes later --- but it doesn’t take bikes, nor does the next one. We have therefore booked the 16:55 arriving in Penzance Station at 18:50.

I expected to be able to do this using the Trainline service . However, good as this website is for simple journeys, it seems quite unable to cope with journeys with several legs and more than 2 bikes. I reported this on the feedback link and was told that it would have worked if I had checked the "allow double time for changes" box. This was true for this particular journey but, as I discovered when I booked the other part of the journey, not for others.

We then have a ten mile cycle (in the dark) to our first nights B&B in Sennen.

Next morning just a short ride to Land’s End before we start the proper trip.
