The journey from John O’Groats to Home.

Bill, Phil & Chris meet their families at Lime St. Station Liverpool

John O'Groats sounds like a place to pass through quickly. So we will use the North Highlands line to get to Inverness and so back home

Sounds like it will be a nice trip.

Don't ask me who this is!

Booking the Train

This trip is similar to the initial journey to Cornwall except that we ran into an extra complication. It seems that the train from Wick to Inverness has only very limited space for bikes. Initially we wanted to travel back on Saturday 25th Sept. That was not possible because even in June all spaces were reserved. There is no service on Sunday so we decided to travel back on the Monday 25th. That was impossible to book using the web site or the telephone and after countless calls to various people, ScotRail told me this was because 25th September was the first day of the new timetable and they couldn’t say when bookings would be made available- "Just keep trying".

Towards the middle of August things changed -bookings opened, but of course the Internet site still wouldn’t allow bookings for people with bikes. Another call to ScotRail revealed another limit to the bike capacity on the train - not only is there a total limit of six, but a limit of two for individual bookings. Fortunately the booking clerk I spoke too knew of this and said that if he booked me 2 and 1, rather than 3, it should be OK! The tickets have now arrived - 17 of them and I think there are some missing - ScotRail are going to get "someone who is more familiar with the tickets" to call me back…………

All being well the journey is as follows;

13:59

Then Car or train  (will we be able to face another one?) home

There is still the option to catch the train from Thurso instead of Wick, which is only a mile or so further from John O’Groats, but would give us an extra 30 ,mins sleep.
